Music is fun, but tinnitus is not. Protect your ears.
I have tinnitus, permanently. It started exactly a year ago. I spent 1 month being obsessed with it - and now I just live with it. Sometimes I even find it reassuring - oddly it reminds me I'm still here, if that makes any sense!!!
It has varying levels of severity, with a much louder ringing if I've been exposed to loud music or consumed a lot of alcohol. Caffeine also makes it louder. It's always present though.
The first thing I do when i wake up is hear it.
OK, so I'd rather never have had it, but really I couldn't care less now. In a weird way I hear more detail in everything I hear now - so in a way it looks like it almost improved my hearing......
My odd take on the whole thing.
I can see what you mean...but I think it has more to do with being exposed to loud music and trying to hear it's elements and everything in a loud environment...
I believe what you're experiencing is, that you learnt to hear...that's all
and tinnitus is a bad side-product...
ah, good ol tinnitus
you're never feel alone when you have tinnitus
mine isn't too bad yet, i only have probs with really high frequencies

According to the magazine article the little sound sensor hairs in your inner ear get damaged or destroyed by too much noise exposure. Like a field of grass that is knocked down permanently flat by a very powerful wind. Eventually the sensor hairs don't work properly anymore, but their nerves still output random signals that the brain tries to interpret as sound, so you hear that ringing or hissing noise. It could be like having an amplifier connected to a broken microphone with the gain turned up full. All you get is a big hiss or white-noise sound.
I probably had too much noise when I was a kid from long trips in boats with noisy outboard motors. Also motorcycles which are bad because when you go fast your ears get hit with a with a lot of turbulent air pressure and noise (nowadays it is more common for motorcyclists to use earplugs). At the time it didn't bother me but maybe these things caused damage that was building up and it only became really noticeable in the last couple of years when I was doing DJ practice and listening to a lot of music (and usually not very loud).
Now I try to keep the volume down and use earmuffs or earplugs when using power tools.

Do you guys have it in both ears or just the one? I've had it in just my right ear now for about 2 years.
Like others have said though, you learn to live with it and you forget its there. I always wear earplugs when clubbing now though

You think it might be cured in the near future?
According to the magazine article there might be some proposed research into inner ear tissue regeneration using embryonic cells that can be redirected to grow into any other type of cell (or something like that), but it's a long way off.
Headline of the article was something like "once your hearing is damaged, you're pretty much screwed."
that sucks balls
I do get kind of a tonal humming when it's dead quiet. It's uniform in both ears though, and I remember having it since I was a teenager, so I don't think it's directly related to DJing or any other sort of ear abuse.
