Question to people who work in retail (past or present)

Do you feel that wearing a shirt & tie is appropriate at any stage below the interview (if there is one) level?

Of course, it's assumed that you dress up real nice to interview unless you're told otherwise. But what if I just want to speak to the manager *about* open positions, or ask about the status of my application?

Career services told me that I should, but I'm thinking that it would be so inappropriate and out of place. I agree with them that I should be clean-cut, but damn.

Maybe a polo and some nice jeans? Or does it even fucking matter?

just go dressed however you'd have to be if you worked there (or at least around that same level).

Well, I'm going to probably wear a plain, non-logo polo shirt, dress pants and shoes. But I suck at fashion so bad. I don't even know if I should tuck the polo shirt in or not.

Posted by shaw on Sep-24-2007 23:13:

with dress pants, always.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Sep-24-2007 23:17:

Yeah, omg, dress pants with your shirt untucked look soooo bad.

If you have the clothes to look nice, wear them. Actually, shit, if you have the clothes to look nice, what are you doing getting a job in retail for?

I suppose retail is a really general word though. As far as basically any job interview is concerned though, anything you wouldn't be expected to wear a 3-piece suit for is probably something you should wear a tie, dress shirt/pants and dress shoes for.

edit: and dress gloves. Don't forget yer dress gloves.

he's not talking about the actual interview, though--just going back to check on info.

tucked in polo and kakhis.

Yes, definitely wear something nice. Not as far as a shirt and tie, but definitely more than casual. Inquiring about positions IS the first interview. Be sure to ask to speak with the manager.

What if I wore a dress shirt, top button unbuttoned (edit: not untucked), with no tie? I'm seriously considering this.

You mean top button unDONE? If the shirt is tucked in and you have a nice belt + nice shoes on, then yes..that would be entirely appropriate.

Also, be clean shaven, don't smoke before you go in (if you're a smoker), and don't chew gum!!

what position are you looking for?

The COR delivers once again. Thank you. I'm ready.

My college is helping me find these jobs. I'm going to many different places (some to ask if anything is available, others to ask on the status). I'm not partial to any position, so I can't really say.

khackies and a button shirt will be just fine

I'm just asking, 'cuz it's a bit different if you want to be the manager @ some business tech place, vs. a floor person @ home depot.

Question shouldn't be about what to wear, question should be " why am I getting into retail?"

Posted by nchs09 on Sep-24-2007 23:39:

someone has to do it no?

That's what the robots are for.

Walk in there wearing a static x shirt and grab that manager by his collar and demand the job.......

.....GODDAMNIT

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-24-2007 23:44:

I really don't think it's so bad. I mean as a life goal, yeah it's aiming kinda low. But if the goal is just to gain experience in customer service then I think it's great.

Customer service translates to so many other jobs. Two very important things you learn are team work and communication skills. You can take that knowledge to just about any job.

I'm very grateful for all the retail experience I have. Surprisingly, they look for this in the nursing field. Actually no, it isn't that surprising at all.

Posted by nchs09 on Sep-24-2007 23:46:

ya my first job was a at a restaurant... perhaps the worst shit ever.

when they moved me to the bar, it was better, but it was still a fucking restaurant ..... i would much rather work in retail than in a restaurant ever again

Posted by Frenchie on Sep-24-2007 23:47:

I guess. I never did retail really, so I don't know much. If retail includes all the jackasses who always seem to grumpy then I'd rather not get into it.

I could never work at a restaurant. I can only put up with so much of another person's sense of entitlement...and there's enough of that in retail.

My first couple of retail jobs were at smaller stores where the owners/managers didn't subscribe the "customer is always right" rule. It was great!
