fixing warped records with a laptop

Okay, everyone knows how annoying warped records are -- esp when they are coned and u get no friction.. anyway the ideas iv heard involve glass, books, and refrigerators, blow dryers, etc.. well i live in a dorm and that isn't possible for me..

so i just got the new bonzia record and it was major warped.. so i stuck it under a thin but hard cover book, and put my laptop ontop of it. my logic is since my laptops always on itll warm the record, and flatten the record..

it worked perfectly. 2 days and its almost normal. im about to go in my crate and grab all my warped babbies.. im listening now and notice no sound quality loss..

anyway help this hopes all the college kids or ppl with those small ass city apartments =)

neeever mind.

the last few gruves on the center of the record got screwed up.. rather odd... but oh well

only on the side that was warped out tho.. its rather interesting. the other side is fine

worth a try

wait no final correction.
the side that was warped in got screwed up towards the center, where it was warped the most.

i guess the gruves got pushed a little tighter together, making it so the sound is poppy and at the end the needled won't even stay in the gruv.. (in the final center spiral loop).

i guess this could mean theres no hope for warmed records, which SUCKS

too bad that it didnt help even though it makes sense...

Posted by SpykeChyld on Apr-24-2002 00:06:

lol, Ilike you logic man, seems like it should have worked

Posted by dazzed on Apr-24-2002 00:09:

yah i don't see why it wouldnt have worked.

either the record was screwed up already and i don't remember it.. its only a week old.. or it was just too warped.. oh well

best method ive heard... put the record between two sheets of glass and leave it in the sun for a while

thats not too complicated eh?

or you can just buy a new record

Posted by DJ LIQUID on Apr-24-2002 06:17:

i only have like 1 or 2 reks that give me trouble...what i do is grab the record with both hands and wiggle it...errr kinda bend it back and forth...it fixes it right up

dont bend/wiggle too hard or you'll snap it

might have left it under for too long

im going to college this fall and i was wondering if i should take my equipment... it may just be me but id always be paranoid that some dick head would steal all my stuff. how is it really?

thanks

my schools pretty small so theres less theft..

but i have a coffin and lockable record crates. the stuff is soo heavy it'd be a real pain to steel (i also live on the 4th floor).. and when im away for periods i use a steel cable they gave us for laptops to lock it all together, b/c theres no way theyre taking it all at once.. too heavy

they can take the laptop =) i don't care.

oh yah and get insurance.. i think i got insurance on it all for something like 60 a year. probly worth it. they don't cover records tho but most people don't realize the value of records.. just us djs

Well I hvae my Techs in my dorm room. I live on the ground floor, the window's always open and there's like a main path going by my window that tons of people are always walking past... And they haven't been stolen. Don't worry, you'll be fine.

Same here, it takes a lot of bending before a record snaps. Not like those old 78 RPM records from my grandma
