Question What's wrong with Windows XP? What's all the negativity around about?

Why are a lot of people around here putting down Windows XP? Is 2000 REALLY THAT good? I've been noticing that WinXP is VERY underated around here and I'd LOVE to know WHY...

i have XP Pro. and i'm happy with it. it utilizes your ram more efficiently than any other OS and if you run too many progs and you get all slow and ghey then XP has the highest quality alt/ctrl/del menu. it runs so smoothly and you'll never get a blue screen. i've yet to get one in the months I've had it.

the only knock against it when it first came out is it lacked compatibility with some programs and users got annoyed, but most products have been upgraded sufficiently since then. my friend has ME and i've been on his comp quite a bit, and XP is simply better.

i like it. had no problems what so ever. if u read to many horror stories about it, it is because those people are computer illiterate.

I can't get it to work on my machine, i suspect a hardware incompatibility, and i have a 1.2ghz athlon machine with most parts less than a year old. So that sucks.

The main problems i hear are alot of incompatibility with hardware and software, like games etc, and ESPECIALLY burning related - everyone seems to have probs in that department. And also i heard that there are some big security holes in XP which hackers are working on...

Yeah, I like XP alot. The design is really nice and it's way better than that buggy ass Windows 98 that I was stuck with for too long.

yeah, there can be buring problems if you use older software. I got Adaptec's lastest Roxio burner and my 24x sony works like a charm.

the security hole is relatively unknown but it does exist , tho only someone extremely 1337 would use it , so your irrelevant ass home computer won't be touched..... for a while.it's the Universal Plug and Play hack, and there's a site you can go to that lets you close that up and goes on about how microsoft is shit for not telling anyone about it.

so far XP has been so stable...i dont have to reboot for a week or more...

i dont have XP, i actually have a copy of 2k that i have yet to install - dont wanna lose my music on accident!

im running 98, and it has its issues. my main beef with XP is just that its typical Microsoft. sure, everythings integrated and all that, but it also requires 256MB+ memory to run, and has all that multimedia integration crap that isnt really necessary if you know how to set up 98...its really just a ploy to make people buy faster processors and more memory.

as for whoever said people that dont like XP are computer illiterate - i would argue the opposite. i have problems occasionally, but i know how to deal with them, and they are never huge. i look at XP like i look at Macs after the new Explorer i have on here. i checked the wrong button somewhere and now all the movies pop up in some tiny ass, annoying window in another window and i cant control them. its just some dumb ass programmer thinking im an idiot who cant control Media Player, so i need Windows to do it for me. thats fucking annoying.

sorry, im not defensive, i just got off on a tangent! basically i dont give a fuck...my OS runs fine, isnt a mac - and anyone who is 'supposedly' computer literate woldnt be running Windows in the first place...late/

well it depends what you call computer literate. i believe i understand enought about computers to consider myself computer literate. but then when you talk to some CS major, im prolly an idiot cause i dont run my own linux server and all that shit. basically it just depends how full of yourself you are, what kind/speed/etc you run, and who you ask.

then again artists wouldnt be caught dead using something other than a Mac cause thats what theyre built for nowadays. i could never understand why they would make a computer where you had to reboot to solve problems, or send it in to the factory tho...go figure/

My machine is an 800 Mhz Celeron that I bought brand new on 2001/09/17 and it functions fine with WinXP but, it's a little slow due to my lousy 128 MB of RAM. It used to have ME but, I Installed XP on 2001/12/23 and it works fine.
BURNING PROGRAMMES: NO problem here. Most (all?) burning programmes are upgraded fully by now to run on XP. I just don't see what teh problem is here... What burning programmes are you using that are giving you trouble?

dude i'm not running XP remember? Most of my mates who had XP when it came out had burning problems - things like complete software incompatibilities, hardware incompatibilities or just wierd errors to do with underrun buffers and so on. I'm sure there are fixes now though...

Add to that incompatibility of older hardware with custom drivers (such as my digitizer and laser printer) and you'll have the reason why I prefer to keep Linux & 2000.

Smiley DJ NO SUPPORT FOR 3DFX

If you ask me XP IS A PIECE OF SH..; why because this lousy OS has no compatible drivers for my 3dfx Voodoo card. It uses a generic driver that kicks glide in the nuts and only lets u use direct 3d, which in my opinion suck big time. That is the only reason I had to move back to 2k pro.

However I think that XP is way better and has some really cool things like the switch option that lets U swith between accounts without closing other users up amon other features.......

Posted by yujie__ on Apr-24-2002 16:59:

they have unofficial drivers for your voodoo at www.x3dfx.com u know. since they got bought by nvidia u cant get any support for your 3dfx card.

$|-|lT is it true that you need 256mb memory??
if you think 128mb memory is bad, im on 48mb atm

i wanna upgrade my pc, ive currently got pentium celeron, 300mhz, 48mb ram, 6 GB hard drive ( ) with a voodoo 3 card i added and a sony cd-rw i added
problem is there are no decent puter shops here, can someone recommend what sort of spec i should be aiming for, i only wanna spend around 800-900. anyone know any websites i can browse for good puters with different brands and good selection?
many thanks

i got my AMD thunderbird 1.3G, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, GeForce 2 64 MB TIVX PURE, SB LIVE, Sony 24/10/44 CDR and a nice mobo etc for about 600-700. the best idea is to go to a wholesaler rather then a big company that puts the computer together. me and my friend went down to Pacific Mall (aka Little Asia) and put together my system by buying each individual part and putting it together. big companies usually give you shit namebrands and quality. i got all top of the line stuff, and it was cheaper then going to some big wig retailer. prices drop faster with wholesalers when newer stuff comes out, so now you should be able to get something comparable to my system for cheaper

XP is not a problem as long as u dont use ur computer for much, like if u only use it for using office, games, etc.. and dont install to much stuff on it. Also i have found if ur system is not so generic then there's where the problem comes in when i had xp i formatted my pc like 3 times and it still wouldnt function correctly that is with al the patches, updates, etc, then i switch back to win2k and its ten times faster. As for xp needin 256mb of ram that's not true and win2k has better utilization of ram/processor.
Anyways XP is ur regular winME just wait and see after a year using it u might reconsider

I feel your pain...but I'm getting the GeForce4 Ti4200 very soon so that will fix my problems

Posted by Fin.K.L on Apr-25-2002 04:24:

XP is troublesome.
Some of the older peripheral device not supported at all (from anywhere... not from manufacturer or not from MS)
so you can't use it.
Much more buggy using software or hardware than win98 or some other windows.
on various computers CD recorder, scanner had problem working under XP.
XP takes more resource therefore not nicely slow on older machine.

Comparably if the computer is fast and have no part that gives any problem then XP should be good.
