Ignorance??

I get somewhat pissed off when some of my friends who are not into EDM refer to all types of EDM as "trance". I am a House DJ/producer, and when I talk to my friends about the music they all refer to it as "Trance", or "pookie head music"...Im sure that I am not alone when I say that this is frustrating, and I try to educate them to the best of my ability so that they can differentiate between different genres of EDM...Any thoughts please reply!!!! Cheers, Manuel C!

ah, if youre not spinning trance you are dfntly spinning minimal

Actually I cannot stand minimal...It is my least favorite genre of house...Im just saying that when ever they hear any thing electronic that automatically assume that its trance...they dont stop to consider that there are various genres of EDM

seems like you need some education as well.

Not at all...Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I dont think that i'm any less "educated" than you are because I dont enjoy listening to a particular style of music that you do. Hence why I posted Ignorance as the topic headline.

It's impossible, and not to mention pointless, to have detailed knowledge about every single genre of music out there; as you've just ever so ironically proven with that post. Even more so if that genre of music isn't even of great interest to you.

I don't know why people put such great emphasis on trying to label and define everything. Whatever happened to just liking 'good' music and disliking 'shit' music? Those are the only 2 genres that matter. Don't worry about it.

Maybe you shouldn't be worried about your friends.

Maybe you shouldn't have friends.

So you're saying there is no minimal form of house? A lot of the trendy stripped-down beats nowadays are essentially house. They're groove-centric rather than monotone and percussive. Compare Robert Hood to... well, any trendy producer you like to call minimal, and you'll understand the difference.

Posted by RJT on Sep-29-2007 15:27:

Welp, you can still color me fucked right off at the continued use (or rather, misuse) of the term minimal.

Well in.

Minimal is not a genre of house, minimalism is a musical concept. Neither is house a genre itself but rather a sub-genre of electronic dance music. I thought you should know that by now.

Posted by woscar on Sep-29-2007 15:38:

Is it me or is this the 1,354,825th thread about this topic?

Although, it's the first one where minimal is referred to as the "least favorite form of house".

I'm not suggesting that minimal is a genre.

Then what the hell is you're point?

It doesn't even pay to try to get into it with him - I don't know that I've ever seen someone attempt to cover up shear ignorance with faux-intellectual elitism as quickly as Mr. Zoid.

What is yours?

Honestly - if you're just trying to come off as remotely intelligent, you're failing miserably.

Oh please, spear me. Faux-intellectual elitism? I really don't get why you guys bash on me every time I post something a little instructive, but I think this one went a little overboard.

Edit: No it wasn't my goal at all. I just find it rather annoying that this guy came into the MD and makes a thread about how his friends being uneducated about EDM when he himself considers minimal a "genre of house". It's a fucking forum, the posting my opinion is not gonna blow up the world. Get over your self, hating on "Mr. Zoid" is not gonna make you a better person. You of all people should know that ,Rob.

He was blatantly refering to stripped-down forms of house, i.e. you should read his post as follows: "Actually I cannot stand minimal (house)...It is my least favorite genre of house".

When someone says minimal on these forums, you might aswell assume it's either techno or house they're referring to. It doesn't mean they need education, it's just a short way of describing it.

We bash you because you are guilty of the very ignorance you attempt to pick on people for. If half of what you said was anything more than you just regurgitating what you've read other people write on the forums, I may think differently - but I honestly don't believe you have a single orginal thought in your head.

You are the very epitome of both predictability and faux-intellect.

And I'm definitely not allowed to correct them on the matter, am I correct?

You can do whatever you'd like, it doesn't mean anyone should take you seriously.

Oh yeh I read books on "Forum Elitist Behavior and Etiquette".

It's TA, I don't expect to be taken seriously here. Even if I was it wouldn't matter 'cuz my age would stop it from happening with all the other close minded people here. Jumping on the "hate wotyzoid" bandwagons not going to do much for you either.

edit: except from making you a "k3wl" person here.

First, I don't think you've ever read any books on anything at all, and second, your age has nothing to do with it because if you acted like an adult, no one would even know or care how old you are. There are plenty of folks the same age as you on the forums who seem to manage fine.

This isn't a "Hate Wotyzoid Bandwagon," I'm doing nothing more than describing you and how you act. If you don't like it, the only person who can do anything about it is you.

There is nothing to correct. When someone says "minimal" in an electronic dance music context it means minimal techno, minimal house or the stuff in between that is a bit of both and therefore is refered to simply as "minimal".
