BSG goes to sh1t (Season 3 review)

never in all my life has a television series proved to be so disappointing. with a near faultless pedigree i think i was used to being spoiled by top-notch drama, plot & action and just assumed this would continue right through the entire series.

but then we came crashing down with season 3, which just goes to show no series (however awesome) is immune from becoming (relatively) popular and then turning to turd.

dont get me wrong, i love characterisation and development as much as anyone, the problem being that seasons 1 & 2 were able to do this whilt ALSO driving the plot forwards.

where the fuck was the plot in season 3? did it even make much sense? not from where i was sitting. it felt like b-grade sci-fi/fantasy concepts of the most contrived and unconvincing nature. "we need the story to go this way so let's force it this way" -if I wanted to watch shit this bad there's 100 other shows I could be watching.

The series is only saved by the odd emotionally-driven plotless episode that actually resonates, where acting performances remain outstanding and (as always) music and camera work is stellar. All the bits and pieces are here, but unlike previous seasons they just dont meld together in a seamless piece of awesomeness. Its as if half the writing team decided to go onto greener pastures, and left those who had written too many "days of our lives" episodes.

It is only the pure quality that the mini series and seasons 1/2 that lends ANY hope to the fourth (and final) season, a desperate denial of reality from me. Surely something that started out this awesome can pull itself back on track? I fucking well hope so.

2 contrived plot points out of 5.

damn, I was JUST about to say that PKC watch a real show, like cops.

And where's the bit where you say "Sorry to everyone else for telling me this, but I was too stubborn and proud to admit that I may be wrong, until I actually watched the damn thing about 4 thousand years after everyone else"?

It turned to shit after the first season. I haven't even watched it since then and I'm surprised it's still going tbh.

Posted by Aesthetic on Oct-01-2007 06:28:

all of my recommendations are quality. check out this new one with stephen dorff called 'botched'.. its a low budget cult type flick. first 20 minutes sucks and then you will piss yourself

oh, let me make it clear: the shittiest BSG episode and being raped by a donkey is still like a million times better than any stargate piece of absolute bollocks ever made.

Ahahahaha, you're an idiot.

SG1 > BSG

well, its each to their own obviously. but i always found SG1 to be VERY episodic, trekky, and "oooh, let's see which weird planet our heroes save today". the themes/concepts dealt with in BSG are much more serious and relevant imo.

lol. it's cos they wear cool spacesuits isn't it? c'mon, you've been seduced by that sexy fabric! they could tell you anything, and you would find it the most interesting thing ever, cos they are wearing cool spacesuits.

(lol, ive never seen it, but with a title as such as it possesses, im thinking space jumpsuits, aliens and hot girls)

haha. my comment was more in relation to how they deal with democracy, torture, freedom, terrorism etc. some of it derivative sure, but still powerful and contemporary nonetheless.

no, their space suits arent cool, and there are no aliens. time magazine doesnt give out "series of the year" awards for fluff

Stargate was meant to be that. It leaves it wide open for many stories and the characters are fantastic. That's why it's survived for so long because like Star Trek it can go in so many ways yet still retain familiarity.

BSG is more drama oriented and feels like a linear game. You know what's basically going to happen so it's limited but in one way that can be a good thing as you know why you're watching it and what you want to see.

The big mistake they made is in season 3 when they just stretched it out and there were hardly any cylons. It basically felt like filler episodes for a series which can't live with fillers due to it's specific story. Also, the whole tension totally disappeared. It felt like 10 eps of just cruising around doing fuck all. Pretty much what you touched on and we told you this while we were watching it

That's why I like shows like Stargate more. I know they will be there, the filler eps are imho entertaining and you know something will happen in the next ep or the one after. Shows like BSG have no room for this.

apparently they blew their budget in the first 4 episodes or so, so kinda had to scale back on the cylons yet another parallel with my beloved B5.

yeah, and that's fair enough. i just prefer my fantasy tv shows to be more like books

well since they have a stargate that connects to different worlds that they have never been to before, thats kinda the point isn't it?

Posted by TCB on Oct-05-2007 12:30:

well i was reading a interview with the producers of bsg and they acknowledged some peoples dislikes of the filler espisodes and that have taken that feedback into the creation of the final season.

so i think expect you should expect a blockbuster finale season

see, thats what i wanted to hear! fucking wicked.

and really, the filler episodes were topnotch for what they were, its just that they weren't much. as drama i thought they were excellent, but that's obviously not what the show should focus on.

thanks for the tidbit mate, im hard as a rock now
