Help Lower Gas Prices - Clever Idead

I got this in my e-mail today, and I think it is not such a bad idea.
This relates specially to ppl living in Ontario
If you don't feel like reading the whole thing her is the summary:

- Oil companie have been fucking us around for a long time
- It is expected for the gas prices to up to 90 c./l. this summer
- Stop buying gas from two biggest companies ESSO and SHELL for the rest of the year.
- They will be forced to reduce gas prices
- Send this out to people on you mailing list if you want to.

THIS IS NOT A STUPID CHAIN LETTER

For those who care about gasoline prices, please read the following message and pass it on to others.

United, we - the gas consumers - stand to gain.

Rumour has it we are going to hit close to 90 cents a litre (Canadian) by
this summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take
some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE
than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last
April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew
we wouldn't continue to hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more
of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought
of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about 50.9 cents is super cheap.
Me too! It is currently 68.9 cents for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil
companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a liter of
gas is CHEAP at 50.9 - 55.9 cents, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that
BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up
more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see
the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing
their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely
on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices
if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: FOR THE REST OF THIS YEAR, DON'T PURCHASE ANY GASOLINE FROM THE
TWO BIGGEST COMPANIES (which now are one), SHELL and ESSO. If they are not selling any
gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices,
the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact,
we need to reach
literally millions of SHELL and ESSO gas buyers.

It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading
and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note
to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten
more (30 x 10 = 300)
... and those 300 send itto at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on,
by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached
over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to
ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level
further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to
do is send this to 10 people. That's all.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people
within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within
the next 8 days!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE
HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES....

i remember last summer gas went down to 39.9 cents and everyone went bezzerk buying containers of gasoline
i wouldnt mind that summer price coming back and staying like that

Hmm, sucks for me. I drive 20,000 miles a year. I paid $1.39/gal today at citgo. Shell is up to $1.45/gal!

they wont lower the prices you fools, theres too many cars as it is, maybe rised prices will reduce the amount of polluting crap...

and im not a tree hugger but itds blindingly obvious why prices are so high, specially with oil becoming increasingly scarce...

number of cars increases in the world so pollution is definately not being reduced


gas prices are rediculously high, so i would try any crazy idea like that if it helps, who knows maybe it will, whether it is a direct or indirect effect. im simply sick of paying more and more for gas. in my city, its cheaper to drive to most places than it is to take the bus
besides, its not like shell and esso are the only gas companies out there. i think i'd rather support local canadian companies like petro canada than those rip off's

I wish gas prices were that cheap in California. WHere i live the gas prices are about $1.75- $1.80 a gallon. And when i drive up to the bay area to see my girlfriend the gas prices up there are $1.85-$1.91 a gallon. I'm getting reamed by these gas prices....

Oil supplies are not even close to scarce. That is a bunch of post-Greenpeace propoganda.

The biggest oil reserves in the WORLD are in the Gulf of Mexico. Yes, right off of our own coast. Why are these not drilled?

Besides, prices aren't high because of scarce petrol. They are high because of goverment taxs from this and other countries. I mean, how do you have a 35 cent difference between states? That has nothing to do with scarcity.

It is supply and demand. The oil is not more scarce for those gas stations nearest to the Interstate, idiots! lol. Supply and Demand. Thats why prices are higher during the summer.

But that idea sounds nice in principle, but won't work. I mean, I pay no attention to where I buy gas. I shop cheap, you will never get enough people involved to actually do it.

But whatever, treehuggers, please bitch me out. My REPUBLICAN ass LOVES it! lol.

hmm...sounds logical. doubt it would work but if someone wants to start shit in vancouver, let me in on which gas company cuz i hate the prices as it is now and anything that might work i will try.

US and canada are being smart asses. they've got their own oil resources. canada has a major one in the prairies and i believe off of atlantic coast, in the atlantic or something like that.
but these two countries are using up resources of other countries b/c they can afford to and they are saving up their own for later

the states supposedly have cheaper gas than canada does, northern washington anyways
um, in canada, the only company that you could get a price like esso's and shell's is probably petro canada. super store has cheaper gas from time to time as well. i think in some parts of canada canadian tire also has gas stations.
i used to go only to petro canada until gd esso seduced me with their points card

OK this is why I am pissed of about gas prices. During the conflict in Iraq few years ago gas companies were buying oil for twice the price they are buying it right now, and they could still sell it cheaper than they do now. They are fucking around with us, and they put the gas prices as like.

I can see why you guys are getting pissed off at raising gas prices - your society was built over highways and personal cars, while the european society is more public transport oriented.

This has resulted in US&Canada being responsible for over a third of the carbon dioxide emissions released into our common atmosphere, with only 5% of the people..

I dont have a car, I'm not planning on getting one either. The 72 buslines, underground, 11 tramlines and 12 local trains in Helsinki (a city of 500k people) take me anywhere I need to go. The monthly ticket for these costs about 30 USD, which is a lot less than what I'd pay for car insurance, gas etc if I drove to work everyday.. I believe most big European cities have a good public transportation system.

i don't know why people are so worried about oil running out...

when oil runs out, we WILL have an alternative power source. shit, we could make one right now popular if the U.S. Gov. wasn't so influenced by the oil companies.

for christ sake, we put a man on a moon, made a nuke, all when we needed to. We don't NEED, nor want to popularize an alternative source, because we are so used to oil, and oil companies control so much.

but when oil runs out, we won't have to worry.

I was in Hong Kong earlier this year and i must say that city is mad.. the air was really bad and dirty, but they learned.. It is very expensive to drive, but the public transportation system is awesome.. heck, i hate driving now. I wish there was similarily good public transportation elsewhere.. going home from clubs was easy, take a cab/ bus/ minibus or, if it was past 6 am agian, take the subway.. no designated driver NEEDED!!!

first of all, the public transit here sucks chiken balls. to make things worst, fairs have been going up and up and up like they are on fckin yiest. our city is divided up into 3 zones. one-zone fair costs $2, two and three zones are $3 and $4 respectively.
for some ppl here, to go to one part of the town would cost less to drive than to pay $8 for transit and have a bad experience of constantly waiting and walking long distances, not to mention wasting lots of time
the reason i bitch about gas prices is b/c they are growing as well.
the company that runs the transit system here also gets a certain percentage as a tax from every liter of gasoline sold.
i just dont think its fair, thats all. i didnt mind back when gas cost a reasonable price, i never bitched until they started fcking around

well, inflation is a bitch as they say, right? I mean everything gets more expensice (let's not include computers here) so why should public transportation not get more expensive?

in Frankfurt it is a freaking ripoff too, but it is not as bad as in vancouver i guess...

you see it is a chicken + egg problem, since there are not that many people using the public transportation, since it is inconvenient, they are not making a lot of $$. hence, they need to raise prices to make money.

as soon as they raise prices, less people will use it..

now you might say, why don't they lower the prices, so that more people use it, so that they make more profit?
they would, but the problem is the so calle price elasticity. Since you say that the public transportation is inconvenient (or at least apri_peel does). if apri would do the calculations, i am pretty sure that in the end, she would save money taking the public transport to work and back every day, but she percieves it to be more expensive than her car, because public transport is inconvenient. Therefore, the price of public transportation would have to be much lower, in order to get more people to take it.
Even if public transportation were free, I am sure that there would still be people driving their cars to work. So not matter how low the price, there would be a number of people not using it. Therefore, the transportation company has decided to set the prices to their current level, so that they can operate profitably.

If the price of gasoline rises, which might not affect the public transportation company as much as it will affect apri, she might start to realize that the public transportation is cheaper, and she, amongst other people, will be using that. When there are more people using the public transport, they will generate more profits, therefore will be able to provide either cheaper prices, or better/ more routes and increased frequency, therefore leading to more customer satisfaction...

NOTE: Apri, I am in no way trying to pick on you, i am just using you as an example. I hope that it does not personally offend you, as it is not intended to. I hope you don't mind

now, in Hong Kong, public transportation is still pretty expensive (you can pay ~1-2 US$ for a single ride subway ticket), but there are so many people using it, that during the hours of operation (6 am - 1am) you will never need to wait for more than 5 mins for a subway.. and busses are about as abundand, and much cheaper too. At some point in time, the Hong Kong goverment made a choice -and i think it was a good one- to increase the price for regular gasoline (I think they pay US$ ~2 / liter) plus raising taxes on automobiles as well. The reason for this was the air pollutions. it has forced many people to switch to the public transportation ...

given the pop. density in HK is much higher than in Vancouver etc..

anyhow, i hope you see my point..

I remember a few years back, when gas here in calgary(very oil oriented) was 45 cents a litre. We cried outrage when it hit 50 cents a litre, now it hover @ 64.

but guess what? its all taxes. the price of crude hasnt changed that much. but gasoline has a sin tax now. just like liquor and smoking etc.

meh....if u wanna use gas, be prepared to pay the price.

altho I wish I had better public transit. monthly passes are $60 and going up, and transit sux ass.

According to xe.com 0.64 USD = 0.440689 GBP, so 64 cents a litre works out at 44p in UK money.

Fuel prices over here are nearly twice that. The UK has the highest rate of tax on fuel in Europe.

Interesting one for the environmentalists: Did you know that a modern catalyst equipped car actually cleans the air when driving through a city centre? This is due to the air being polluted more by buses, buildings and foreign industry (trans-boundary pollution, a most unwelcome import!)

Air pollution levels are actually falling, and have been since 1990. Modern car emissions are already over 99.9% colourless, odourless, naturally occurring gases which pose no threat to air quality or climate change.

Mr DuMonde TrAnCeR, I'm guessing you either don't drive, or drive a very boring car?
