How many of you are "on your own"?
Being a producer located in the southern United States (Dallas ,TX), I don't know very many people who are actually into this music, let alone producing. As a result, all my knowledge is gained from reading books, watching the few useful tutorial videos I can find (such as the Andi Vax one) and researching on the internet. While this is a good way to learn, it pales in comparison to having someone be able to give practical advice on a specific situation or question that you may have.
I have noticed that some producers have the benefit of having some type of "mentor" or at least someone they know in real life who can actually give constructive advice and help by physically being with the producers when they are working on music. For me, that has always made things a lot easier to grasp. Sometimes it can be hard to grasp certain concepts explained in print form and apply those concepts to a particular project or problem you may be having.
How many of you are totally on your own when it comes to producing? What I mean by this, is that you are learning how to do this with no outside help from anyone and are having to learn all these skills using nothing but books, videos and, of course, sites like this one?
I shared an apartment with a fellow producer for a while, but neither of us was more experienced than the other.
I'm on my own, but I like it that way. I don't care about the final product, I just produce for fun - and discovering new things by accident is half the thrill.
I think the correct question should be:
How many of you are not on your own
I know some producers that attend to an academy, but I can ensure you the big majority is by their own.
Kopi =o.

Its pretty much how it is. Noone will teach you their secrets so you pretty much have to learn everything yourself.
Wow, I didn't see that the first poster was from Dallas. I'm from there, though I only live there in the summer now.

| Originally posted by Eric J I had a few releases on vinyl back in the day, but to be honest, they weren't that great and I'm not sure how in the world I got them signed in the first place. In addition, it was MUCH easier to get things released back then, even if your material was sub-standard. |

Now about anyone can get a digital release. I picked a bad time to start up with this I guess, with the market so flooded, it's hard to stand out. |
The Genre certainly hasn't stagnated, I listen to stuff from 2003 and I realise how much the genre has changed just in that time, the stuff we call trance now wouldn't have passed in those days! Today's trance has trackcounts up to 50, not like the old days where you were pushing 10! That's got to add complexity to the production I think, but the good thing is that those track counts are available to more people these days, so there's much more variety.
Of course the market being so crowded does make it hard to become a superstar producer like Paul Van Dyk or Sven Vath or something. For me trance has always been about the music anyway, not like rock where its all about the rockstars, that's what I like about it.
On topic: I've always produced completely alone except for manuals tutorials and this forum. I prefer to do things myself, which is why you would rarely find me replying to threads about EQ, I never needed to "learn" how to EQ, I just sort of played until I understood a what did what, so I can't understand why other's often have trouble. A few of my friends are interested in production, but most of them are only planning to start producing, they haven't really started. So of course when they come to me for advice, its really the blind leading the blind
Yeah i guess im like the majority of you. I only get help from the site, but its great help at that . I seriously have learned so much in the last few months. I did have a msn buddy that I meet in the promotion forum. It was trippy cuz after we got to talking i found out that he actually lived right down the street from where i used to live in Vancouver. Small world huh?. We used to send each other songs to get each others opinions, but he had only been producing about a year like me so..... But he was actually pretty talented for how long he had been playing. I dont know what ever happened to him him he just kinda disappered. I remember he said he was supposed to have a release on deepblue, but i havent seen anything since.
Now out of all of my friends none of them produce, let alone even listen to trance.
. But i do have a friened over seas whos getting back into production.

Yeah I checked into that after you posted it. I'll have to put that on my calendar. Check your PM.
Yea I dont produce with anyone else, I've loved trance since 14 and Im now 22 I'm still loving it more and more and been producing with Cubase for over a year and starting to like what I hear as I have all the time after work w/e's and no gf but I do go out with freinds to Bar's.
I swear I wont stop until I get a release and also hope it kick-starts something along side my main day-job career, I'll be getting some new decks soon (cdj's got stolen last year) and hoping to do some local house dj'ing then move on to DJ'ing Trance.
I dont really know too many people fully in to trance/house and would love to have a group of us going to the big clubs like I do occasionally but I would love to live nearer say London where theres always something on although Im under an hour away from Passion and Godskitchen clubs near Birmingham...
I've read Belgium is the place to go to live a life of EDM heaven, Europe in general just loves Trance/House without the boozey culture the U.K has....so like Holland/Germany and the Czech Rebublic I've experience amazing nights out.
