All my news come from Colbert and Stewart. No wonder I'm so ill-educated and totally unaware of what's going on in the world.

That's an awesome example of a Straw Man argument but other than that it's really just a bunch of blather

It's actually a "grass man" argument. I'm not dry to the point of being considered a "straw" just yet. Nice of you to see it for what it really is - "bunch of blather". Mission accomplished.

I didn't really know what was going on and thought that you were initially being serious.

I'm really happy that I found that now as I hadn't previously heard of The Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 (22 U.S.C. '1461)

Adam Curtis definitely has my respect for shedding light on the propagandization of America by Edward Bernays in his Century of the Self series. ([[ LINK REMOVED ]]
)

It goes into mild detail about how Bernays used propaganda in order to condition the American public into thinking that we were overthrowing the (democratically elected) government of Guatemala for the benefit of it's people (and not for that of the United Fruit Co.)

Here's a good excerpt:

Here's an interesting paper that I found:

Propaganda and Disinformation: How the CIA Manufactures History

It begins with a good quote from Malcom Muggeridge:

quote:
In the eyes of posterity it will inevitably seem that, in safeguarding our freedom, we destroyed it. The vast clandestine apparatus we built up to prove our enemies' resources and intentions only served in the end to confuse our own purposes; that practice of deceiving others for the good of the state led infallibly to our deceiving ourselves; and that vast army of clandestine personnel built up to execute these purposes were soon caught up in the web of their own sick fantasies, with disastrous consequences for them and us.

Aren't lies inherent to politics though?

(Most of the time I find myself choosing who lied the least when I vote...kinda sad really)

I have to agree. I also don't think it's too hard to distinguish between a lie which tries to save ones own face such as,

quote:
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman"

- Wm J. Clinton

and a pernicious lie which might ultimately embroil an entire country in a surreptitiously engineered war such as the one we're in now.

quote:
"Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of Al Qaida."

- Pres. Bush in his State of the Union Address (January 28, 2003)

quote:
Prewar intelligence doubted al-Qaida link to Iraq, report says (link)

I mean geez, even a famous propagandist like Ed Bernay's had some ethics...

quote:
The Ethics of Persuasion: Some Guidelines

by Edward L. Bernays

  1. Do Not Use False Evidence
  2. Do Not Use Illogical, Unsupported Reasoning
  3. Do Not Falsely Represent Yourself
  4. Do Not Conceal Your Purpose or Interest
  5. Do Not Cover Up Consequences
  6. Do Not Use Baseless Emotional Appeals
  7. Do Not Oversimplify Complex Situations
  8. Do Not Pretend Certainty
  9. Do Not Advocate What You Don't Believe Yourself

I don't see why the US citizen should have to pay taxes for any system which we are unaware of its operation.

The government should find a way to fund itself if it wants to classify information, else we have a right to know what's going on.

It's like hiring someone to do a job without a resume, interview, or any prior information except that you have the inkling that they're not trustworthy or safe.

It's already messed up enough that if the government wants to perform an action outside of its jurisdiction, it simply contracts a 3rd party to do so.

I wish more people would do their homework on all of this.

In his farewell speech, President Eisenhower alluded to the fact that our counrty's liberty could be dependent on our having an enlightened and informed populace but how informed are we, really, when everybody gets their little sliver of prepackaged and sanitized news from the mainstream corporate media? A series of sound bites, slogans and catchy phrases (like "Fair and Balanced") which seems as if it's meant to hypnotize much more than it is to inform.

Posted by Trancer-X on Jan-31-2008 01:20:

it all fits together

quote:
"There is, of course, no reason why the new totalitarians should resemble the old. Governments by clubs and firing squads, by artificial famine, mass imprisonment and mass deportation, is not merely inhuman (nobody cares much about that nowadays); it is demonstrably inefficient and in an age of advanced technology, inefficiency is the sin against the Holy Ghost. A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves that do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude. To make them love it is the task assigned, in present-day totalitarian states, to ministries of propaganda, newspaper editors, and school teachers"

- Aldous Huxley

This documentary by GlobalVision Productions details the bias, propaganda, and failure of the mainstream American media to provide objective, independent news coverage in the lead up to the 2003 Iraq invasion and subsequent aftermath. It also details the Bush Administration's management of "public relations" to ensure a climate of blind patriotism which clouded journalism to the point in which skeptical and critical viewpoints were ignored for the right-wing agenda of pre-emptive war as a valid foreign policy instrument.
