Just noticed how the official name is "labor". Has it always been like that? Since when did an Aus political party adopt the American way of spelling, or am I mistaken? Is "labor" part of the English (her majesty's) dictionary?

from the ALP website:

quote:
During the early years of the ALP, the Party was referred to by various titles differing from colony to colony. It was at the 1908 Interstate (federal) Conference that the name 'Australian Labour Party' was adopted. In its shortened form the Party was frequently referred to as both 'Labor' and 'Labour', however the former spelling was adopted from 1912 onwards, due to the influence of the American labor movement.

ive always spelt it labor, but didn't know it was an Americanism.

another good reason not to vote for them I guess

theres more than one option. Not viable options, but options nevertheless.

Especially when the labor candidate is Nicole Cornes

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Oct-11-2007 09:01:

meh, i was an idealist back in the day...but unfortunately the best way to hurt the liberal party is to vote for the ALP.

hurt labor in the senate if you want people. thats where you vote for all those alternative parties. and god knows the dems need your vote. but vote labor in the lower house for christ's sake

But theres absolutely no way in hell I'm ever going to vote for Nicole Cornes. I actually prefer someone who knows what she's doing and the policies of the party she's representing (no shit, she has no idea about any policies).
That and I hate poeple who use media contacts (The Advertiser who she used to work for, Channel 7 who her husband works for) to run their campaign under the claim its 'news'.

She's a laughing stock, and a couple of weeks ago I heard a national radio program laughing at her too so her notoriety is spreading

Labor fucked themselves over in my electorate

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Oct-11-2007 09:25:

yeah. its like theyre trying to lose

Posted by gumble on Oct-11-2007 13:02:

and also that Kate Ellis bimbo

Under the preferential voting system you can vote 1 for a minor party and so long as you put Labor higher than the Liberals in your preferences, your vote still goes to Labor in the likely event that Labor and Liberal are the two highest vote-winners. So basically you've got no excuse not to vote Dems in both houses...

yeah, i knew that but i wanted to keep it simple. plus, doesn't that depend on a preference swap? i havent seen any democrat preferences yet, though i would hope they flow to the labor party.

anywayz, when are you standing as a dem james? id vote for you.

You choose who to give your preferences to. The preference deals only relate to how to vote cards, you don't have to follow them.

I'm voting minor party both houses [dem ] so even though I will preference a major party and they will get the vote anyway, the dems get the electoral funding!

Doing this right now and got the Q: Do you turn off the tap when brushing your teeth?

WTF!? Who in their right mind lets the water run for a couple of minutes? That's just retarded. What the fuck is the point? Never even thought of leaving it on.

Posted by Fledz on Oct-13-2007 12:39:

Anyway, I got:

Liberal

then Labor

Sounds about right.

Democrats - Hahaha, yea right.
Greens - Errr no. Not a fucking chance in the world in voting those hippies in.
Family First - Is that even a party?

I've always been Liberal but Labor is the only other party that I may go for.

Sadly, Rudd is a bit of a sly bastard and Labor is well...shithouse when it comes to the economy so I'm pretty sure I'll go with Liberal. Johnnie has been good, but Costello will take over and I see that as a positive.

I was hoping for that to happen a couple of years ago. Now, I just don't know. Johnny doesn't seem to want to give it up.

Despite what the media (and the Liberal party) have been painting of Rudd, I do think it's time for a change. Politicians will be politicians so no matter who wins, we still get a deceptive bastard not necessarily representing the views of the people (or not educating them enough to allow them to make an informed judgment). It's just the lesser of two evils I suppose. Policy wise - I currently favour Labor.

Makes me wonder... is there a democracy out there that is actually closer to the democratic ideal (empowering the people as opposed to the politicians)?

Kevin Rudd=

There's "direct democracy" like they have in Switzerland (where you can call a referendum to add / remove any law you want so long as you get enough signatures) but it would get annoying to have to vote on something every weekend I'd imagine, especially if you weren't politically inclined.

Maybe im too busy to fill the 50 boxes below the line? ;p

and to be honest, what the hell have the dems done since they sold us out over the GST?

do we want another "yeah, ok johnny" party with the balance of power?
