Smiley DJ My TranceSound.net Interview with Tom Colontonio AKA DJ TommyBoy

http://www.trancesound.net/diversht...colontonio.html

1. First and foremost I would like to say that I appreciate you having this interview with me for TranceSound.net

Tom Colontonio: No problem, it's my pleasure!

2. When did you first decide that you wanted to have a career in music; and what age were you at the time ?

Tom Colontonio: Well, I always had a big interest in music from a young age. I was a guitar player since I was 11 and just kinda fell into it along the way. I really enjoy alot of different music other than Dance like Classical and some Rock.

3. Growing up what music artists inspired you to want to establish a career in music ?

Tom Colontonio: Well, when I was younger and playing music in bands it was Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Hendrix. I used to sit and play guitar for hours and hours just to get better myself. When I made the switch to Dance music it was deffinetly Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten..

4. In the beginning as you were first starting out were there any difficulties that you came across for getting your tracks and name known ?

Tom Colontonio: Well it can be difficult getting your tracks to other artists and getting them played. I used to send out music alot and not get feedback. After a certain point it became easier as my tracks got better. Getting feedback is always helpful in my oppinian. I try to always give people some advice if time permits.

5. How did you go about spreading the word about yourself; and is there any advice that you might have for others in the same position as you were previously that are trying to get recognized in the EDM scene ?

Tom Colontonio: Well I would make tracks and send them to other djs/listeners as well as making mixes. My advice for upcoming producers is to try and perfect your sound and find your niche. Get your tracks to others djs and see what they think. Like I said before feedback is always helpful.

6. Being that I have attended some of you events in the past, I noticed that you have a fairly large entourage; besides your lovely wife Danielle, who travels with you for your performances ?

Tom Colontonio: Hahaha, well that always depends. We have a nice size crew so alot of the time well get a bus for NYC gigs. As for outta town gigs it depends who's up for the party. We had a few friends fly out a couple of weeks ago with us to Milwaukee.

7. What do you feel about the EDM scene in your hometown in Philadelphia ?

Tom Colontonio: I'm actually a New Jersey resident, I live about 15 min outside of Philladelphia but, as for the scene it's deffinetly not what it used to be but we still have somewhat of a decent one. There are still promoters throwing some good parties and you can find someplace playing EDM almost every night of the week at smaller spots. Our best parties are still late nights though. We have lost a few great clubs over the past 2 years so that hasn't helped either. Alot of the new clubs opening up are all about mashup.

8. Do you have a studio in your home; if so what does your set up consist of ?

Tom Colontonio: Yes, I have an apple Mac pro and I use Logic pro 8 to sequence. I use all soft synths. except for the Virus ti. I also use Mackie HR 824 monitors and a Motu 828 soundcard. Is a nice little get away for me.. lol I call it the "Dungeon"

9. Do you prefer to be addressed as Tom Colontonio or your other alias DJ Tommyboy ?

Tom Colontonio: Well as of late I have been using my real name Tom Colontonio, so Tom is fine.

10. How would you describe your personal music style in your own words ?

Tom Colontonio: Ahhh I guess I would say energetic trance ? I try for good kicks and bass as I believe they drive the track.

11. Do you have any future plans or working with other producers on some collaborative efforts or possibly even vocalists ?

Tom Colontonio: Me and Sean Tyas have talked about doing a vocal collaboration in the near future.

12. Can you tell us anything about your new radio show called Moment of Trance on Sense.FM ex former SenseGenerate FM ?

Tom Colontonio: It's a 2 hour show every 2nd & 4th Monday at 2pm EST. I try and give some people some good exposure on it. My first show was a guy Tomonari Nagaoka from Japan. A friend of mine turned me onto his music and I love it. He's a classical pianist and he incorporates that into his tracks. Very good stuff. I do a bit of talking on the show and usually have a guest for the 2nd hour. I enjoy doing it alot.

13. Are there any other projects currently in the works that you would like to share information with us about ?

Tom Colontonio: I have just finished a remix for Jon O'Bir which I am very happy with for his track "Ways and Means". I recently signed a 2 track EP to Conspiracy records which will have an Activa and Jon O'Bir remix on it along with the originals. I also signed a track called "Paradigm shift" to Discover and I just finished a track called "Serious Truth" which Sean Tyas aired on his di.fm show last week. It got some great feedback on there so Ill see what happens with it.

14. What are your top 5 favorite tracks at the moment ?

1. "Drop" - Sean Tyas (what can I say.. I love the drop.. it's wicked)

2. "Sense of Connection" - Sophie Sugar (love all her tracks)

3. "Moments"- Cartel (a amazing collaboration of John Askew and John O'Callaghan!)

4. "Bulldozer" - Simon Patterson (just a massive tune)

5. "A drift in space" - Anguilla Project (top notch tune)

15. Are there any other comments that you would like to share with your fans, as well as members of TranceSound.net ?

Tom Colontonio: I appreciate all the support people have been giving my music lately. To the producers keep at it. If you believe in yourself you can make it happen. Thank you for this interview too! I will see you in December at Sean Tyas and Simon Patterson gig.

I just wanted to give a big ups to Tom Colontonio for new radio. unfortunately, I havent been able to listen live, but i think euphoria has been posting the his sets, and they are straight up nasty. This guy is def. gonna blow up. He's got some major talent not only as a DJ, but as a producer as well.

Call me slow, but i just realized that Tom was the producer of the track, Suspect, which has been one of fav tunes since last year when John Askew was bumping it.

Tom, I'd love to see you (and sean tyas) throw down a proper trance night in boston. I know Sean came to beantown a few months ago, and there was a poor turnout, but none the less, Boston needs some good trance by some non-headliner talent.
