Bills coming to Toronto

The Buffalo Bills are planning on bringing the NFL to TO. They are going to start with a preseason game in 2008, followed by a regular season game in 2009.

I believe that this is key to keeping the Bills in Buffalo beyond Ralph Wilson's lifetime. Buffalo lacks the corporate money to keep the Bills viable in Buffalo, so I am hoping this can lead to a decent revenue stream for my beloved Bills.

How about that game with Dallas a couple weeks back? lol jk jk I secretly wanted the Bills to win, just because it would've been such an upset.

I'm stoked about them playing here though. I'd definitely wanna go to one of their games, depending on who they play.

If we get an NFL team here the fans will be rabid - me included.

We'll get one team and all of Canada will be cheering it.

I doubt it. I can't see it having a lot of support out West. Toronto should never get an NFL team though, in my opinion.

you dont want an NFL team to come to toronto?

or you dont think it would be a good idea to bring an NFL team to toronto?

The only way the NFL will work in Canada is if the dollar stays where it is and you find some idiot who is willing to dish out the money to build a stadium.

The NFL coming to Toronto will be the end of the CFL and of the two games CFL is more exciting and more interesting IMO.

I think the NFL would do amazing in Toronto.

Considering it's only an 8 game season I dont think we would have a problem.

Also, i don't think all of Canada would cheer for Toronto since most people have been NFL fans for as significant time and already have their favourite teams that they pull for.

GO PACKERS

I agree that the CFL is more exciting and interesting, but I am not a big fan of the small league. There isn't enough competition with 8 teams to keep it exciting.

The hope here in Buffalo is not that the Bills will relocate to Toronto, but that a home game or two a year will be played there, thus bringing in fresh revenue streams.

The Bills will NOT be moving to Toronto(I fuckin hope)

Yeah I realize people would keep their usual faves - go Bears - but if they started doing well they'd get national support, including TV ratings. Canadians are very patriotic when it comes to sports. Look at the support for the Blue Jays in early 90's. Raptors when they go to the playoffs. Hell, we even cheer for (or play favorites with) American teams if they have more Canadian players.

A single Canadian NFL fanchise would get support if it was successful right off the bat - if not it's fucked.

Posted by emonster4life on Oct-19-2007 01:34:

isn't there a CFL league with 8 teams already?

Posted by malek on Oct-19-2007 01:42:

There's not enough money with TV contracts for a Canadian team.

TV networks here are way too cheap compared to down south...

thus the failing of an NFL team in Canada.

Plus, an NFL team would cost over 1 billion$.

I think it will be good for the team. Anything that will help keep the Bills in Buffalo after Ralph Wilsons era, I'm supportive of. If it means having one home game played only an hour and a half north, then go for it.

Posted by urban_legend on Oct-19-2007 03:49:

So what we can watch them lose four super bowls? lol. If they ever get back to the playoffs, oh why do I root for a team that just cant win. I mean who drafts JP Losman?

I have been to a few games in Buffalo and all I can say TAILGATE!!!!!!

I love the CFL but it will die as soon as this happens.

GO BILLS GO!

Toronto will Never get an NFL team. Unless all the other cities in the states that dont have one (Vegas for example) pass up on the oppourtunity to get one. And if that happened it wouldnt happen for another 5-7 yrs. Min.

plus the tv contract issue that was mentioned earlier doesnt help either.

i could have sworn you told me that you weren't a bills fan

Posted by TranceGrooves on Oct-19-2007 07:08:

Bills are not moving to Toronto and neither is a regulated NFL team coming here. The Bills just want to have a second venue for couple of games a year thats all to attract more sponcers and revnue. Just like NFL is planning games in Europe, this is almost the same thing. Before Bills could even think about having a game in Canada they would have had to ask NFL and we all know that NFL isnt run by a bunch of idiots. Out of all the leagues, NFL by far is the most organized and successful. Also NFL is not solely run on media contracts. Check out the attendence and ticket prices of it's regular season games. These folks make decent coin. I think alot of you are just quoting that radio station dude's add on TV (whatever his name is lolz)

So here is to the Bills and the NFL. I would love to see few NFL games in To. Maybe one day the Saints would come visit too

I love the Bills.

I'm just totally fed up with a consistent loser.

How many times can I let these cocksuckers break my heart?

If the NBA put the Raptors here (the Grizzlies were a mistake), the NFL can put a team here. And the Raptors were put here when the NBA's popularity was on fire - it wasn't a poor business decision.

The state of the dollar now - and into the foreseeable future - also favors a Toronto NFL team being able to handle the financial burden of being in the NFL business (which was always an issue in the past).

i heard today on Sportsnet that there's a chance of the team comin to toronto for a couple of seasons cuz they want to put a dome in buffalo. imo i dont think itll happen. i think buffalo will move but not to toronto.

UPDATE!!!

Buffalo Bills To Play 8 Games In T.O.
Wednesday January 30, 2008
By Dan Ralph The Canadian Press

The National Football League has reached an agreement with the Buffalo Bills that will allow them to play eight games in Toronto over the next five years, starting in 2008.

Two sources requesting anonymity said Wednesday that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will make the announcement Friday at his state-of-the-union address in Arizona. The Bills, as well as the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, would then hold a joint news conference in Toronto next week to officially unveil the details.

That, though, was news to Argos co-owner David Cynamon.

"I have no idea, I swear," he said when contacted Wednesday. "I know about the Bills potentially coming here for games, but that's it."

However, news of the NFL's approval isn't surprising. Last week ESPN reported Buffalo would "almost certainly" get approval from league owners to play a regular-season game in Toronto in 2008.

The sources said the Bills will play a regular-season game at Rogers Centre in 2008 after the CFL season, avoiding possible conflicts with both the Argos and Ticats. As part of that deal, season-ticket holders with both clubs will be given some sort of priority at purchasing tickets to Buffalo's game here.

However, The Fan 590, a Toronto all-sports radio station, reported the Bills' agreement only ensures that the 2008 game won't conflict with the CFL schedule and that it wasn't clear whether that stipulation would also apply to the other four years of the deal.

The Fan also reported tickets would be done via lottery, with first crack going to Argos and Ticats season-ticket holders, then Bills season-ticket holders. The average price would reportedly be C$250 a game and fans would have to purchase all eight tickets and pay for them upfront.

In October, Bills owner Ralph Wilson Jr. asked the NFL for permission to play eight home games in Toronto over five years, beginning in 2008. Buffalo would play one regular-season contest each year at Rogers Centre, with three exhibition contests sprinkled in over the five-year span.

The plan, Wilson said, was to an attempt to expand the Bills market as well as its fan base by playing games in a more vibrant Toronto marketplace. The hope would be that playing games in Canada might result in more Canadian businesses purchasing the high-end seats at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Bills attract a solid group of fans from southern Ontario -- between 10,000 and 15,000 per game, depending on the opponent. Metro Toronto boasts a population of about five million people, compared to just 1.25 million for the metro Buffalo area. Another factor, too, is the strength of the Canadian dollar and the health of the southern Ontario economy compared the economic sluggishness currently plaguing Western New York.

That has prompted many to see the Bills' plan as their first step towards relocating to the richer, more financially appealing Toronto marketplace. Wilson, 89, fanned those flames last summer when he announced he wouldn't sell the Buffalo franchise in his lifetime but that it would be sold the highest bidder upon his death.

Talk of the NFL coming to Toronto has existed since the 1970s. But the combination of Wilson's statement, the Bills' playing regular-season games at Rogers Centre, the strength of the Canadian dollar and deep pockets of the Toronto NFL group headed up by Ted Rogers and Larry Tanenbaum has many believing the NFL's arrival here is inevitable.

Cynamon and Argos co-owner Howard Sokolowski obviously think so, too. They reportedly spoke to CFL commissioner Mark Cohon and the other league owners about buying an NFL franchise for Toronto to ensure the Argos' long-term survival in the city.

The overwhelming belief is that if the NFL does come to Toronto, it will not only spell the end of the Argos and Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but ultimately kill the CFL. But in November Cohon said he has a strong line of communication with Goodell and that the NFL commissioner's top priority is protecting the CFL's eight member franchises.

NFL would be very successful in Toronto especially with a loyal fanbase. It really wouldn't surprise me if Toronto eventually became the new home of the Bills.

PS: Bills suck, but at least they didn't cheat their way to 4 super bowl defeats

Posted by Zentac_75 on Jan-31-2008 04:49:

I love me some backbreaking buffalo bills, but

They are not moving here. (at least not until we begin using the AMERO and that whole tv contract issue gets fixed) Im not particularly excited about the idea of them playing here on a consistent basis. A game here and there over the next few years to showcase some of the teams the NFL has is fine.

some thoughts...

I think their is a no-tailgating law in toronto. That is honestly a part of the football ritual when attending a home game. And even if (never gonna happen) that law was ammended just for the bills.... Where are you going to accomodate 60000 fans outside the rogers centre hmmm????

Second....

despite what most people think...I don't even think Toronto is a 'hometown' for the bills. I know more Chicago (they're alright) Dallas (damn cowboys) and Pittsburgh (puke in my mouth then swallow and puke again) fans that reside in the gta than Buffalo fans.

Third....

Their are several markets in the US that are much more suited for an NFL team. (I have no idea how LA couldn't keep a team while San Fran and San Diego and Oakland can)

Fourth...

Toronto already has a team that dissapoints constantly to no end.....

Even when they had the Raiders and the Rams, LA is more of a college football town. They're religious with USC and UCLA football.
