Origins of the 1999 Essential Mix World Tour

How did Paul Oakenfold's Essential Mix World Tour come about? That is, what caused Radio 1 to grant him such a massive share of airtime, a privilege, afaik, that has never been extended to any other DJ. Was Oakenfold really that much more popular than the rest of the pack in 1999? Was it a failed experiment and Oakenfold was just lucky to be on the trial run? Any explanations?

Personally I think Oakenfold had that effect on the world... I know he is the reason I'm into dance music now.

actually, it was just a continutation of carl cox's em world tour of 1998. coxy was the biggest, or at least amongst the biggest ranked jocks at that time. and when trance blew up as it did in 1999, oakey was contacted by radio 1 to do a em world tour.

i wouldn't say it was a failed experiment as all his mixes from that year received pretty high praise. it could have been that they wanted to spice the show up a little bit who knows.

Ah, excellent. Where can I learn more about that?

Also had a lot to do with the fact that Paul Oakenfold was pretty much taking over the DJ scene in 1999. He was responsible for bringing trance out of the underground and major clubs in the UK and out into the world. Most notably the US.

Yes. Cox had some great mixes in 98, and if i remember right he was all over the Globe as well like Oakey.

Oakenfold was the reason I got into trance, and got to experience different genres. I wouldn't like EDM if it was for him.

Long live Oakey!

A picture is worth a thousand words, but since your intellect is below average you cannot understand the story from the photos.

And cursing w/ a statement only shows you're insecure.

Your picture is worth 1000 irrelevant words.

Any info on the Cox 1998 World Tour? How did it come about? Clubs, locations, dates? Are the mixes available on the net? Why is it far less popular than Oakenfold's?

I suspect that Mikey Mike remembers the days when TA was a decent forum and is a bit bitter at its decline into the state where a photo of Oakenfold overlooking a crowd is considered an answer to my question.

It's a sad sad day when a TA'r cannot understand the gravity of that photo and the history behind it. Sad sad day...
