BT & Fleming at Avalon review
not surprising that there's no review thread about this show-cause there was no one there! poor fleming had a handful of people on the floor although he played a set that rocked, if you're in the mood for some good psy-trance
haven't been to avalon in a couple of years but I remember 2 things about the place that I hated immensely:
1. there's always a long line outside moving at a snail's pace (which gives the impression that the club is packed inside) but when you go in the main floor is actually empty
2. regardless of how much you're supposed to pay on whatever guestlist, they always charge you more.
well..nothing's changed with this crappy club. at midnight on a sat night there wasn't even a single person ordering a drink, and the floor had about 5 people although the line was the longest wait I've had all year at a club.
BT completetly rocked the place, although he only played for a measly hour. that one hour, however, was so full of energy that you couldn't ask for more. I'd go see Bt anytime, he's worth the bill even if he plays for an hour. dinaire was good, and fleming was great too. felt bad for fleming though, he had no audience to play to although the man's a great dj
avalon, however, still sux ass
^^it really sucks that this party was announced later than the 500000 other parties going on that weekend. I would have been there 1000% if I had not already made plans for the evening. I love all three DJ's, and even more so would love to show JooF some love so that he keeps coming back....he was amazing the last time I saw him......
....hope this party wasnt discouraging to all three of them because I know a lot of people were dissapointed in not being able to make it.
Sucks to hear about it. But in all honesty, it was a good idea to stay home it seems. Especially since I was out the night before.

we drove by Avalon at about 1 am on on Saturday night and there was a very big line outside, but it was obviously for a hip hop party. Is there a seperate line for the EDM party?

^^ i dont think so...
Avalon has always been primarily an EDM club with acts regularly on the main floor, the hiphop area was always off in a side area (which is always overcrowded and unfortunately RIGHT next to the bathrooms -- which i hate
)
Was going to wait until I got home to post a review but heres a quick one since I'm at work
Got to Avalon pretty much at 11PM and the line was just forming but the club wouldn't be open until for another 15-20 minutes. Just waiting in line gave me the impression that the crowd was not here for VD, BT or J00F
My friend and I were very undressed too compared to everyone else (shirt w/ a sweater and jeans) so we got worried about getting in plus we had our backpack (we were leaving after J00F directly to JFK and back to SF). Line finally started moving and got in about 5 minutes later. Friend couldn't bring in her prescription medicine even though it was hers! It got worked out later in the night thanks to Mike (massivenyc) and Matt or was it Mark? (promoter for Avalon (and Sonar?) and I never asked you for your TA name). THANKS AGAIN!
Overall I liked the club, massive multi-room and sound was good. Crowd and lighting is another issue
Second time checking out VD and first time getting the chance to see him open. It was really a good opening! Awesome track selection and brought it down a bit right before BT got on. I hope it got recorded like last time at Rebel
BT got on and the crowd just went nuts! Never seen BT before and thought he would play a bit more mellow but played a lot of great tracks I didn't expect him too, at least for the first half. Even played deadmau5
Didn't feel the second part of his set that much and the way he ended was rude in my opinion as J
F barley arrived and didn't even know he was going on right away
Maybe BT thought he was closing
Anyway after 1 minute of zero music and crowd leaving, BT dropped one of his productions and did the same ending effects on the mixer, not very creative IMO

J
F got on and played progressive psy rather than bangers (I know Rich (lex400sc) wanted John to play like this at Love Fest as he had an early time slot and was on before G&D) which was a nice change from the previous times I've seen him but the crowd did not appreciate it and kept leaving
Maybe if he started with something more banging a bit more of the crowd would of stayed. I told my friend maybe J00F should of started with his and Wizzy Noise remix of Cydonia as thats a poppy track that would kept the crowds attention. At the end of the night there were only about a dozen of us dancing so it felt a bit more personal.
During John's set, he spots me and was surprised to see me
So after his set he came down to greet me and my friend. He felt a bit bad about us making it out and the crowd not being so great as we've seen him before in SF and LA but let him know that it was fine as it was SONARs second gig? plus it was a free flight anyway
Chatted with him for a bit while he took photos with fans said good bye. Then while trying to get my friends medicine outside the club, John shows up again waiting for his ride and we start chatting again
My friend and I w/ John. I like John's name for my shirt J
F design that my friend is wearing - SAN FRAN J00F shirt rather than TA J00F shirt

Was good seeing Molly too! I forgot your TA name

rest of my pictures are at http://www.nextlevel.ws/rizo/071020/
Also has New York ran out with street names that they had to use this in front of City Hall

ok back to work
again, I really hope the DJ's come back, its dissapointing to hear about the turnout, but if you think about it, they got the gig promoted later than the other 500000 parties going on..... so people were very sparce trying to attend all the parties. It was such a weird weekend with so much going on......
sorry you came all the way out rizo, hope you enjoyed yourself anyways!!

I told John, I now know how he feels when traveling from gig to gig
Hope I can make it for MANDY, maybe Armin too but not sure if I want to take Friday off from work.

If that means going to the club with your pills, laying off the booze/drugs, and not dancing as hard as the healthy average person, (or whatever it is that the doctor tells you to do).....then why stay at home for the rest of your life? |

lol didnt realize I posted 5 thousand times!!
I had been meaning to post a review, thanks acetate for starting it.
I took a nap that never ended on Friday, so i missed Love completely. Asshole. So...absolutely had to go to Avalon, even though I knew I was in for some hassle.
Line: Hideous. Ditto to previous comments about the line being like trying to buy a can of tuna in Moscow circa 1988, and then getting inside to a (relatively) empty floor.
Only saw the tail end of Victor, and he was doing a lovely job. I must say I have a bit of a judgemental prejudice about BT, because his productions are pretty poppy. But i've seen him three times this year and he's just fun as hell. No pretentions, no holier than thou nothing, he's just a great big party. J00F came out and totally changed it up, it was the wacky psy J00F i love, but unfortunately the floor cleared the fuck out. A real bummer, because he deserves better. To his credit, he was still having a great time, and didn't seem to let it bother him at all.
Overall GREAT sets, but because I wasn't high energy, and there were NO other TA's (except for acetate, rizo, mike & matt, as far as I could see) I just didn't feel enough energy. Which is a shame.
Side note: What was up with the rhythm-less suburbanites onstage rolling their faces off? I'm thinking they were acquaintances of BT or someone else, and I'm sure they're spectacular people in real life, but it was more than slightly distracting.
Gilbert: nice to see you again, and to meet Jen. Next time i'm in San Fran I'm gonna make you show me the town.
Oh, and acetate, who are you?
