My Thoughts on Neo Trance
In another thread there was a poster who called Kai Tracid's track 'Aural Border' neo trance because his friend told him so and he wanted some recommendations. For me that track sounded more like the countless other bandwagon attempts at boarding the tech-house ship.
Rather than ruin his thread I decided to write a little rant why I believe neo trance doesn't exist. The prefix neo- means new. In this case a deviation from the norm resulting in a "new form of something or a revival". For example, a neo-con which is a person who shares some conservative views but differ greatly on other conservative issues to the point where they cannot be called traditional conservatives, but neoconservatives. Neo-nazis is another one. They share the same values as nazis but also deviate in the fact that they deny the holocaust whereas the nazis don't because they take pride in that.
But I digress. Neo trance suggests that there is a new form of trance from the standard. Whenever a track follows this rebellious pattern I usually just call it progressive trance instead of neo trance because it means the same thing in terms of definition.
Musically speaking, the tracks certain people call neo trance sound a lot like techno, techno-house, and similar related genres that already exist.
Feel free to share your views.
I understand what "neotrance" refers to. Slightly melodic (or trancy) but still with the stripped down raw quality of techno or tech-house. Pretty good stuff if you ask me, but it's not really some big departure from or revival of any existing style, so i'm not sure about the use of the label. I mean, it's not like melodic techno hasn't been done before. It feels like a forced buzzword. It sounds kinda cool though, "neotrance", and who knows, if enough people adhere to this particular style perhaps it will grow to become a true subscene/subgenre rather than just a few tunes here and there.
I like it.
Who cares about neo trance, who cares about definitions, its all about good music.

I like it too
oh, and also,
1 GODWIN POINT IN THE FIRST POST !
IMO trance isnt what it used to be, I think it's dead guys, really.

Am I the only one who sees the retardedness in all this genre defining? It's either good, or it's not.
Edit: this is the second time in 3 months that you read a post on a certain subject (on the first page of MD) and feel that it's absolutely necessary to start a whole new thread to discuss the exact same fucking subject. You DO know how to reply to existing threads, right? In case you don't, all you do is press the button that looks like this:
at the bottom of the page. It's right next to the one you've been pressing
Neo trance is just trance. The problem is that for ages people have been calling 'trance' stuff that shouldn't be called trance.
Oh dear, more useless hype words and pseudogenres. Even Chemical Records has a neotrance section now. It has 2 records in it
I prefer Wicked Neo trance anyway.
Neo-trance has been around for a while, but most just called it Mr. Anderson-trance.

Neo-trance is a hybrid of minimal techno and early nineties trance. It goes really back to the roots. I totally dig this stuff at the moment. Its absolutely warm sounding stuff makes you drift away.
can someone post some examples of neotrance? putfile/youtube clips preferably.
i know someone will mention border community, but what else? because i dont think border community paints a complete enough picture, mostly because ive never heard any of those tracks in any sets by anyone.

There's something about vid nr 2.
i like the tune in the second clip. that's probably the first piece of so-called neo-trance that's actually sounded remotely like trance to me
To be honest the first video sounds a hell lot more like trance to me, in fact it's exactly what I think "trance" means. The second is slightly fluffy stringy-techno. But both are good tracks.
I just made up a genre. Stringy-techno.

I sometimes wonder whether it is a good thing that these threads resurface from time to time or if its just a waste of time
1- Please, please stop saying stupid things like ''genre defining is unecessary, good music is good music.''
Yes good music is good music. But genre defining is very important. It is not intelligent at all to belive that music can be categorized vaguely. If we could do that, every piece could fit in the category ''polysymphonic sound''.
Rock, classical music, blues, jazz, electronic are as important to define as IDM, neo-trance, techhouse, minimal, electro, electroclash etc etc etc.
Why ? Because they are all very different, born in different places, inspired by different musicians, have different tasks, aspirations, purposes, the scenes are different. Also, genres help to define, structure, identify and unite different groups or scenes.
No, Happy Hardcore and Hip Hop are not the same, even though they are both parts of EDM. The crowd is not the same, the scene is not the same, the goal is not the same
Same thing for neo-trance vs epic-uplifting-anthemic-trance.
Thank you.
2- Neo-trance does exist. It really does. Or maybey should we say it existed ?
However, one thing that is clear is that the genre is struggling...2 years ago, approximately, many people were tired with the jesus pose build up breakdown hands in the air trance. Thats why neo-trance emerged.
The first problem arised when came the time to name the genre. I heard them all: nu-trance, melodic techno, neo-trance....The latter is the one who stayed. The fact is that its not really new trance (nu/neo), it is rather a renaissance of the old german 90s trance. But naming something Renaissance trance is not very catchy, nor original. Neo-trance seemed the best way to go
But, in this very fast and globalized world, if something doesnt stick right away, it probably wont. The genre never got any unity, any common direction. Labels (Border Community, Connaisseur, Kompakt, to name a few well-known) were not comitted, or did not care.
The idea was good, but it was not developed correctly. Some (including myself) believed in it, and still believe in it. the fact that labels did not care is because they did not to care, having commercial success right away with catchy songs (Domino by Oxia was the perfect example).
Now it is struggling more then ever, it needs direction and a goal, and it might fade away soon...
