How Do You Organize Your Tunes

I hate this time of year when things are gloomy like this, so i feel like making a thread.

How do you organize your music? By genre? By Artist? By year? By Month? By Week? Mixes? One big folder? All of the above?

Posted by FunkyCrew on Oct-23-2007 18:20:

some of the artists are organized into their own folders
otherwise everything is just in 1 folder, sorted alphabetically and I just search by name

Posted by Abercrombie on Oct-23-2007 18:20:

If my hard drive is low on space, I burn a DVD with my tunes, write the date, and put in CD album.

\Singles

\Live Sets

That's pretty much it.

All files also have the same Format:

Artist - Song Title (Remix)
Artist - Set Name (Date)
Artist - Set Name (Episode)

hey can anyone suggest some good indexing software for music, videos, images, documents, etc. burned onto CDs/DVDs? preferably freeware.. ?

Pretty much the same, but it's all sorted via genre as well (rock, electronic, hi-hop).

I also put all remixes in [ ] brackets since so many song titles already use the round ones and I think they should be different.

Example: ATB - 9 P.M. (Till I Come) [Club Mix].mp3

Thats something I have been looking for too, but I have just decided to make my own database and populate it manually.

I will eventually write a full program to do it, but right now its a manual process.

hmmm...I like.

But to go back and re-organize all of my music would be a pain :S

inside my music folder...

incoming files folder - everything goes here before i drop it in another one

a folder for each non-edm genre

EDM mixes - all sets organized by DJ name

EDM albums - has folders in "artist - album name" format

EDM tracks - several subfolders... still in the process of dividing over 1000 tracks into each of these

and I use mediamonkey to organize ID3 tags and mass rename tracks to `artist name - track title`, highly recommend using it.

Nah...just use Eagson! . Probably the best MP3 ID tag/renaming utility I have ever used.

I know what you mean. Luckily I decided on doing this a couple years ago before my collection was really out of hand. I don't know if I'd go back and do it now.

  • house - progressive, melodic (pryda and trancey house tracks go here)
  • house - electro, classic, tribal, funky etc
  • techno, minimal, dark tech house
  • house - progressive, weird, trippy (crazy sebastien leger, deadmau5, dahlback etc tracks go here)
  • trance (need to divide this one into a few subgenres when i get time)
  • electronica (tommie sunshine, mstrkrft, other electro/pop/rock stuff)

I'd love to do the same thing with my electronic folder, but it would take way too long and I'm way too lazy.

Chronologically.

And sorted within an Excel spreadsheet with the following headers by cell:

a.) disc number + track number
b.) artist
c.) song title
d.) record label
e.) genre
f.) sub genre

Currently sitting at 170 discs, and 1200 songs organized like this (DJ music)

The rest of my other music is by genre. I have about 1200 hip hop (store bought) sorted by alphabetical order up on my wall from 1992-1996 mostly. Trip-hop/chilled/downtempo I have in a separate section by my bed. Anything else is just combined and sorted in alphabetical order.

I don't even download dj sets anymore.... though I still have them all sorted by artist name within a folder on my computer.

Here is my process:

Download to Desktop for review.

If I wish to keep the file, it gets moved to Downloads Not Categorized.

Then at the end of the month it gets moved to it's appropriate folder under Music/2007 (Month)

After 6 months, it gets moved to my external HDD.

----------

File naming is as follows (including case sensitivity):

Artist - Title (feat.) (remix)

All ID3 tags are generated as well.

I've never understood why people put who the track is featuring at the end, on the track side of the dash. Am I the only one who thinks all the artists belong on one side (save for remixes)?

It allows for proper alphabetical listing this way. If you put the featured artist before the title of the track, it screws that up

Where else do you post photos besides TA and Facebook?

You're right. All my tracks that feature another artist are at the bottom of the list. Small price to pay I guess :S

I Agree.

The only time I have Feat. in the track section is when it's a complete album so it doesn't screw up the ordering like Chris said.

Posted by jchung52 on Oct-23-2007 19:15:

well heres how i do it.

My Music folder is somewhat disorganized still but its a lot better than what it once was. I still have my classical, hiphop/rnb/rap, alternative, Dave Matthews, and other (random songs, movie soundtracks etc) folders. I may throw all of these on dvds as i dont listen to these anymore but would like to keep.

EDM wise: Starting the middle of last year, I switched to organizing my tunes by month. I find this much easier. Before I made the switch I just had a big folder and within it, I would have some individual artist folders like Tiesto, Armin, benassi, etc but its mainly a big folder full of tracks. Then when I really got into house, I made a big house folder which is just random tracks. I used to have a torrent folder but I got rid of that and organized everything by month, year. I also have a folder for sets as well as one for mixes I've made.

Now all downloads go into the current month folder. At the end of the month, I load that month into itunes and listen to all the tracks deleting whichever I do not like. Then throw the best tracks of the month onto cds for the binder
