Entertainment tax in Toronto?

So as I'm sure most of you all have heard in the last day, Toronto has recently accepted to introduce the new land transfer tax and municipal vehicle registration tax (even though there is no regestration being made). Anyways there is already talk about municipal taxes on cigarettes, alcohol, and ENTERTAINMENT! This is to help raise revenue for the deficit in Toronto that the new taxes passed yesterday fail to pay off. The new taxes only pay just over half of the deficit (230 million estimated).

If this new tax is passed has anybody heard if nightclubs and concert halls will be taxed, and if so, how much? To be honest I think these new taxes, current and speculitive, are going to hurt Toronto business and tourism. Think about it, any LCBO, Beer Store, or convienience store within 5 to 10 kilometers of Peel, York, or Durham, will be hurting from lost revenue because of thier location and proximity to county borders.

It is safe to say that some Toronto politicians will be VERY eager to get the ball rolling on taxing nightclubs and concert halls because they already have a personal grudge against them *cough* Adam Vaughn *cough*. This is the same politician that wanted a sidewalk tax passed on to nightclubs, and 105 a month vehicle registration tax. This is to match what poeple pay for a monthly pass on the TTC.

Coupled with crazy parking rates may this be the straw that broke the camels back for nightclubs in Toronto? Will the (905) see a new sprawl of nightlub openings? Most likely not. Toronto is a central locale that is somewhat easily accessable from all regions. That and there is no real comparison of clubs like CiRCA and the Guvernment anywhere else in the Southern Ontario region.

I just want to see if you think these new proposed taxes would effect the club scene in Toronto. It may be a small, big, or no effect at all.

How will this tax affect the small clubs?

I think it will effect all the clubs in Toronto, regardless of size. And if it effects them, you know the fees will somehow be passed down to us, the loyal patrons.

I guess it just depends on how the city decides to charge the public. Either directly or through the club. CP24 did a story on this potential tax on the news tonight.
