Please Join the Bone Marrow Registry
I friend of mine was diagnosed with Leukemia this summer. He's been going through chemo and had his ups and downs, but the last couple of months things have been getting worse. He is in dire need of a bone marrow transplant, and he just found out a couple days ago that after checking the world wide bone marrow registry, no one is a match for him.
So in an effort to help him find a match, my friends and I are trying to get everyone we can to join the registry.
If you are willing to join, here's what you can do:
-Go to www.blood.ca
-Click on Enter
-Click on "Stem Cells" under "What Can I Donate?" in the green side menu on the left
-Click on "One Match" in the top middle of the page
-Then you have to read a bit about it
-Take a 10 question quiz
-Fill out your info
-Then they should call you to set up an appointment, and you go to give a blood sample
Whether you want to join or not, please tell your friends about it. Even if you're not a match for my friend, you may be a match for someone else that really needs your help.
Thanks
it's a noble effort to sign up for the registry..
my co-worker who's the only other person on my team that I work with was also diagnosed with AML this past summer. The chemo didn't manage to get the cancer into remission so he's undergoing experimental drug therapy now.
fortunately he found 1 100% match on the registry but they still need to get the cancer into remission before he can undergo the transplant..
edit: this disease can hit anyone at any time and at any age. basically it's possible for any of us to get it without any warning whatsoever. i saw my friend on a Wednesday and he complained of having fever symptoms. By Friday he found out he had cancer.
I joined a couple of years ago.
Signed up.
I first got on this about 10 years ago when they did a drive at University for some kid... It turned out I may have been a match so then they notify you and talk about the procedure - and then ask if its ok to do further testing. I turned out to not be a match but it just goes to show you - you never know.
I signed up today and got a call within an hour.
They make it really easy to go and give a blood sample to be put in the registry too...no appointments, they just ask you to go within two weeks of the date they e-mail you or even later if you are busy.
I just signed up as well
Registered - awaiting appointment.
Joined.
Or rather I re-activated my blood donor account.
I like to eat my bone marrow, sooo there's not much left for anyone else.
