Problems sending large mp3s to record labels

Hey guys
Im trying to send out some demos using gmail, but it keeps giving this message "unable to perform this operation at this time error code 008"

Im fairly certain its due to the filesize which are around 20 meg, although ive read that gmail's limit is 60mb

In that case do you think record labels would be peeved if i dropped the bit rate down to 256kb/s or 192kb/s???
Or even hosting my files (on my own webspace) and sending the a direct download link?

never heard the word peeved before but you shouldn't be sending emails via attachments... that will really make the record label peeved

the should be 3rd party links (your webiste, yousendit.com, etc).

So the done thing is to send the label a link to your tune???

Better yet buy a domain and spend the the couple of bucks a month for a basic web hosting package. Then you don't have to send links to lame file sharing sites, nor worry about them deleting your files or being unavailable after they get hax0red. It's dirt cheap these days.

Adds a professional touch to your communications as well.

All sorts of special offers on web hosting get posted there from many vendors.

Nobody wants a 20MB attachment in their mailbox (that is even if their server allows an attachment of that size) and it will only piss them off. Just link to your tracks on your site in a private area that is not crawled by search engines (what I do) or you can use Yousendit or Transferbigfiles.com to send them the track. They will be much happier.

So many good offers it seems. Any particular service you recommend? Any that have given you problems?

I would not recommend using a file sharing service that has any kind of file expiration, and all of them do if you are using the free service. Usually sites like yousendit.com only allow the download link to remain for 7 days if you are using a free account.

It is likely that the labels will not even get around to listening to your track until weeks after you have sent it, and by then file download will have expired. It does not look good to a label if they click an expired link, and you need to make sure you have all your ducks in a row, because they go through tons of tracks in a single day and you have about 1 second of their time. If your link is expired, they will simply move on to the next one.

Get some cheap web hosting and host it there.

No label will ever listen to your tune if you send them massive e-mails. In fact it's best to check with particular labels before you send them your demos as they often specify the best way to send them links or if they have a form on their website.

Savefile.com lets a file remain active for 30 days, or as long as it continues to be downloaded. So it's possible to go beyond the 30 days, so long as the file is downloaded again within that time. That's another free option for you.

Thanks for the reply, but I was looking into places where I can buy myself some webspace.

I hear some companies are worse than others.
