Question for UK people

I've just read that hoodies are seen as very negative clothing in UK. Why's that?

Posted by Frenchie on Oct-26-2007 17:10:

gangsta clothing.

It's gangsta clothing in US too but it's not considered as negative as in UK.

Why?

Posted by iclone on Oct-26-2007 17:12:

Alright, so I wikipedia'd this:

quote:
In the UK, hoodies have recently been the subject of much criticism: some shoplifters have used the hood to conceal their identities from CCTV cameras in shopping centres. Particularly when worn with a baseball cap, the hoodie has become a trademark of "chavs"; in fact it has been called the 'chav-style' in an Oxfam report.

Angela McRobbie, professor of communications at Goldsmiths College in the UK, says the appeal of the hoodie is because of its promise of anonymity, mystery and anxiety. "The point of origin is obviously black American hip-hop culture, now thoroughly mainstream and a key part of the global economy. Leisure and sportswear adopted for everyday wear suggests a distance from the world of office suit or school uniform. Rap culture celebrates defiance, as it narrates the experience of social exclusion. Musically and stylistically, it projects menace and danger as well as anger and rage. The hooded top is one in a long line of garments chosen by young people, usually boys, to which are ascribed meanings suggesting that they are 'up to no good'.

That explains it.

When I was in London I went to meet up with some guys I had talked with on a forum. They hate chavs. I wore a hoodie. Shit.

I remember that video where some almost midget ned is rapping (very hard to understand) with funny dance music with piano rolls in background.
I'm not surprised why they hate them.

I think hoodies look cool, but I don't really have any because they're not my style. I wouldn't mind having one to wear here and there, though.

Yeah but you're a ninjar!

And yeah. it's the general lack of intelligence that these people have. They all look the same, lonsdale hoodie, baseball cap, piercing, tattoos that say "omg im hard" and a general aim to intimidate their way through things.

Then when we went to a pub it said outside "no hoodies or baseball caps". I thought they wouldn't let me in, but I guess I looked like a tourist (no I don't wear a fannypack).

I hate chavs with a passion

Posted by Lira on Oct-26-2007 23:59:

Would I be a chav if I lived in the UK? Let's see:

A penchant for the burberry check? True
Wears caps and hoodies at the same time? True
Listens to grime and garage? Not really, but it's fun
Has a thick working class accent? True
Is rude? Nah, not really.

3.5/5

Not bad

That's like saying you're only 70% pointless excrement!

Only time I've ever seen my dearest arc up and get filthy angry was when some little scrote in a pub in Cornwall of all places (they where all straw chewing, slow talking inbreeds when I lived there) about 2 years ago decided to open his gob with "wot arh yar then, a paki?" to me.

Ancestral Mediterranean explosive temper vs common Chav lip = win
