Paul Van Dyk - WHERE DO those high hats come from?

I've been listening to paul van dyk for a while... and I'm just really curious about this cuz i'm kinda interested in buying a sampler.

In Mayday 2000, it SOUNDS like he adds in high hats. In the Mayday 2000 video at 2:20 ( and earlier ) , you hear high hats. These dont really sound like it's part of Fibonacci Sequence. These same high hats are played thru the rest of his gig. You can hear it in darude as well as the transitions between most of his songs.

In his newest gig NEC gatecrasher, you also hear these same high hats.
They have some sort of echoing sound to it and dont really seem like they are the high hats on the vinyl. You can hear it loud and clear in his awesome song at the end.

So i'm wondering how is he making these high hats? From a drum machine or what?

Hey Xquisite

Paul uses a 12 channel mini-disc to get the sounds. Before a set he spends some time in his studio and loads beats, high hats, cymbols etc onto the mini-disc and then plays them off it.

He can also mix into and out of the mini disc.

Why do I know all of this? Because I interviewed him about it last year --> http://www.pcmusic.co.za/archive/20.../interview2.php

if u seen the vid of May Day 2000 he has 3rd Turn table and there are times where there are records on all three, and seem to be playing... so yeah, maybe its the third record.

True, sorry, I didn't read the whole 2000 bit... bugger.

The minidisc he was using allowed him to speed it up and slow it down as you would a standard CD - that hardcore!

Drizzt, yep, he played Second Sun - Empire for the first time at that show hehe, Fox is still jealous!

If you are wondering how he makes the hihats sound that way, he flanges them (according to a friend of mine).

anyone notice how he's been using the simultaneous high-hat/clap laely?

Posted by Astronaut on Apr-27-2002 18:27:

Have you guys seen the Loveparade 2000 video?
Cause when he plays two tracks at the same time -I think he mixes The nightfly & Eternity - the right deck is empty. he plays only one vinyl. had he recorded the mix before?

Posted by VisionsofPVD on Apr-27-2002 20:28:

Wink

During the times when I've observed him spinning, he sometimes uses a third record, or even a sound clip from an md player to use during his transitions from song-to-song...difficult to cue but creates a great driving sound....

Posted by patticus on Apr-27-2002 20:49:

heh right basically putting his standard clap and hihats over everything in the set to make it sound POD-ish?
kinda lame if u think about it, but i never actually noticed it so its cool.
that IS hardcore widget..

astronaut, maybe he was mixing off cd in that case

denon makes a minidisc deck, similar to their dual cd decks

Posted by Marc_Garcia on Apr-28-2002 08:34:

paul spins a lot of stuff from CD(R) . in a standard pvd set about 30 % of the music comes from cdr

doesn't anyone notice that when they record videos they just record various random pieces and then add the music on top of it. Check the trance energy DVD for more evidence. When kai Tracid plays too many times you hear Fire wire and when gielen plays the airscape mix of lexicion 4 you hear the original mix

You know, I remember it and I was always wondering - how it was possible? As far as I remember there was only one vinyl on the decks all time during the set. I don't know if had used cds then, but I hadn't seen any.
So wtf?
