Apple Issues

Whats up guys, I've had a PC forever and just switched to a mac platform to start producing and using for music and im somewhat still mac illiterate lol. Can anyone tell me the programs I need or what I need to do to start recording onto the mac from my mixer for making demos and how or what program to use to cut the mix. I was using cool edit pro, nero, and soundforge before and am lost now on this mac. ALso what are some "apple" based program used to "find" new music because as of right now im stuck with just beatport. PM me if you can help with that. I appreciate it a lot. Thanks

garageband for recording and editing. ssx is a good program for finding and previewing tunes before you buy them.

I tryed usin garageband to record but when i have the mixer connected to the input of the computer it sounds distorted as hell!

you arent going into the mic-in, right???

Which Mac do you own?

I record all my live sets with my MacBook and I do all my editing on a MacPro (Desktop).

WHAT YOU NEED...
1.- Y-Adapter (1/8 to RCA)
2.- Audio HiJack Pro ($29 www.AudioHijack.com)--- I found that this is the best software to record live sets, because... A> No length limitations like other programs. B> Records directly to MP3. C> Saves in Real Time as it's recording... C is a HUGE ONE for me because if my computer ever crashes during a recording, my recording is SAVED until the crash. With other programs you have to save when you're done recording.

ADJUSTING YOUR SETTINGS...
Before you can start recording, you need to adjust your sound card settings on you Mac. Otherwise, it will sound distorted. I'm assuming you're going to use the built in Sound Car.

1.- Go to the BLUE APPLE MENU on the top left.
2.- Select SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
3.- CLICK ON SOUND.
4.- SELECT INPUT.
5.- Device should be LINE IN - AUDIO LINE-IN PORT
6.- INPUT VOLUME should be all the way to the left (as low as possible).

HOW TO RECORD...
1.- Use a Y-Adapter (1/8 to RCA)
2.- REC OUT from my mixer to LINE IN on my MacBook.
3.- Launch Audio HiJack.
4.- From the left menu, select LINE IN.
5.- Click HIJACK.
6.- Select MUTE (so you won't hear it on your computer speakers as you're recording)
7.- Click Record.

macs dont have mic in, only line in.

I actually don't care for garageband for recording mixes, but it does work.

There's also the freeware "Audacity", which is more of a straight up audio editor than garageband.

I use this:
Sound Studio Pro

It's not free, but it's a nice polished application.

For burning, I use Roxio's Toast. It's much nicer on the Mac than Roxio's offerings on Windows.

You can of course also burn CD's in iTunes.

Hell yeah! I use it too. I LOVE IT! I use it for almost anything that needs audio editing.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I'm going to try and set everything up tonight. I can also cut mixes on toast too right?

I use Sound Studio for that. You can set markers, than SPLIT USING MARKERS. You don't get little annoying skip other programs give you

Yep, then you can burn those using Toast... or iTunes, but toast is nicer. You have to turn off the space between markers in either program to get a nice seemless mix.

personal experience

i have an ibook which i guess is supposed to be the cheaper of the models, but it cost like 1400 and it is poorly made. my model didn't have the battery issue, but it still got so hot that it messed up my cd player to the point where i could not use it. warranty was only good for a year and who knows how much they would charge. the amount of programs available is very limited, and someone mentioned soulseek mac version (ssx) and i have to say it is not very good. the thing is, all these people make it out like macs are god and that they never fail and never crash and that is just not true. maybe it's just for me i don't know, but my comp has crashed many times causing me too lose my cookies which sucks because i've lost some shopping carts luckily, i've never lost anything really important like while i was doing a school report or else i probably would have thrown it out the window (literally).

so yeah just from personal experience

Wow! That sucks. I've been using Macs & PC's since high school (and that was a long time ago), and I prefer Macs. The old Mac OS did have issues, but all that is gone now. I'm not even going to start comparing them because that will start the never ending Mac vs PC debate.

I've had 5-6 macs thus far, and all of them were reliable EXCEPT for the iBook. I had the motherboard replaced like 3 times before getting the macbook, and haven't had a problem since. My best friend just had HIS iBook motherboard replaced for I think the 3rd time. Seems the iBook was fatally flawed.

Every vendor puts out lemons from time to time... ask Dell owners about their experiences and I'm sure you'll find Apple has a much better track record... but they still aren't perfect, nobody is. I can say that for a laptop, the apple care plan is totally worth it because any repair for the first 3 years is covered (except damage that's your fault, like dropping it). And they are very good... when I DID need service, I had my machine back in 2-3 days.

And all the new macs can run windows as well so for those situations where you need a windows only app, it's not a problem. Personally I only have one app I use (work related) that's not available on Mac or equivalent. Don't criticize someone who's already made their purchase.

I'm not anti-windows or anything, I would probably be quite happy with a souped up Thinkpad But I like OS X just that much more.

Apple is very quick with the repairs. I had my Logic Board replaced on my MacBook, and I got it back within the next day.

You could just get a program called parallels working, it runs only on the new intel chipped macs, then run whatever program you cant find on the mac through your copy of windows.
Makes a very superior mac, fastest windows computer i have ever seen, and has the versatility of both software groups run on the same hardware.
I would seriously suggest looking into parallels, for your mac.

If you spent the �2000 or whatever you were gonna spend on a Mac on a really decent, well built PC instead it would be an absolute monster, stable as fuck (blowing Apples the biggest claim of why they're better out of the water) and guess what... it would support an infinite amount more software too!!

In fact with the power you'd have behind that you could quite easily have a load of tweak plugins running at the same time as whatever production software you've got running to make your PC look and act like a Mac if you loved it that much (but still being compatible with so much more software and leaving your head free from being wedged up your own arse)

Don't get me wrong, I think Macs are good... but a PC at the same price would likely out perform it, hardly making Mac a "premium computer"

Slight performance tweaks does not equal user experience though, and that's what makes a Mac "premium". You pay for a machine that you take out of the box, plug in, and it "just works". The OS and hardware have already been tested, and you don't need to do anything to start WORKING. Which is why you buy a computer in the first place, it's a tool.

You'd definitely get a faster machine if you either built it yourself or bought one from a reputable vendor. I used to build all my own machines, but I gave up on that idea because I got sick of tweaking with computer hardware during my free time. I know a lot of people do enjoy doing that, and that's fine.

And btw, I have a 24" iMac. There's nothing else out there like it in the PC world. I like that it looks nice, runs silent, and takes up very little space. Those are qualities which make it worth it's price TO ME.

hmm.. we did say that you could get a mac to run "any" windows program.

but this thread is about tweaks for a mac, so dont tell the guy "you shoulda bought something else" whats done is done.. tell em what software to get to do the best for him.

As we said, get copies of VMWare Fusion Trial and Parallels Trial (both freely available from their websites, link provided) and test em out to see which one suits your needs. And which one can handle the software you want to run better.

I hope you can get your mac performing well, they can be a really good comp when you have the right stuff on em.
