Sasha as a DJ.

Someone tell me why I should think he's still a good DJ.

Seriously. Go. Now.

Spooky too please. Any and all reasons will be met with an open mind - they both just bored the piss out of me this weekend.

Don't believe the hype folks.

Also, is this a drunk thread?

Maybe, folks. Maybe.

he uses ableton?

Posted by PoisonJam19 on Oct-28-2007 21:30:

He has a girls name?

Posted by Quinyx on Oct-28-2007 21:35:

His tracklistings are inspirational, altough I'm not sure if that alone warrants him as one of the worlds best anymore. He's had a good year, anyhow.

They are not and that's the biggest problem I've been having with him recently. He sounds like he doesn't put much effort in djing overall.

Posted by Quinyx on Oct-28-2007 21:54:

I dunno, I thought that Bonnaroo set was blazing...although that may have been more on Digweed's part. (Maybe) I should keep quiet, since I haven't really been an authority on him as a DJ for some years now.

Posted by Ted Promo on Oct-28-2007 22:18:

Meh, most of his sets bore me. I wasn't too big into the Bonnaroo set to be honest, but I liked his latest Essential Mix. Any more he seems to pick off of the beatport top tracks and just ablehax them.

Posted by RJT on Oct-28-2007 22:37:

I guess it's just sad to have seen someone who has put together some of my favorite sets (live and studio) of all time become the absolute antithesis of what I want to hear in a club.

I'm sure the set I heard this weekend would sound great when I'm at home or in the car, getting high or something - but in a club it was just laughably bad, and unfortunately of the 5 times I've seen him, each time it's gotten less and less interesting (with WMC 06 @ Glass being one major exception).

It's as if Sasha and Digweed have flipped spiritual places. In the late 90s, Sasha was the inspired, pioneering DJ and Digweed played runner-up. Now Digweed is at the forefront, while Sasha is struggling to maintain a coherent brand.

90s Sasha : 90s Digweed :: 00s Digweed : 00s Sasha

As far as I can tell, 2001 is when Diggers stepped out in front, starting with Los Angeles.

Posted by Ted Promo on Oct-28-2007 22:41:

Yeah but Digweed's like forty billion years old and even his store bought lunch meat has to be carbon dated.

This post made sense.

i havent heard a sasha mix since 2005 or 2006.. and all the ones ive kept are from 98-99..even 96 at Simon's. Now theres just a select amount of DJs who overpower him.

Posted by plaxx on Oct-28-2007 23:20:

I really liked his essential mix, but a few sets that popped up after that were a miss for me...

The thing is, Sasha is very experimental with music. He believes the people always want to hear something new, and people will get bored easily. At this point, I think he's just showcasing a different sound which might not appeal to everyone because they haven't moved forward with the music. A few months down the road, he'll be throwing down a whole new vibe, and seeing as how Emfire has gotten off to a good start, and he's got a few releases lined up, I'm sure it will be good.

Furthermore, people love to see him. He may not be jumping around in the booth, but he has a connection with the crowd which took him nearly 30 years to make. His knowledge of music has only improved, he knows what to play, and when to play it, and he's only expanding.

Keep in mind, this is a big of busy time for Sasha. He's got a kid on the way, the launch of Emfire, track hunting for Involver 2 (it will be released sometime around next summer), the production of his Maven, and touring.

My respect for him has only gone up.

If you don't like Sasha then what can anyone possibly say to change your mind? Empty argument really; it's mostly about taste since technically he's far from inadequate..

Posted by Ian on Oct-28-2007 23:29:

In 17 years of seeing him on flyers or on tape packs or livesets, there's not a single set of his that I actually like. He's played some good tracks now & then but overall I've found him to be highly overrated compared to others. But he's Sasha, so regardless of what he does, there will always be a core of people who goto see him on perceived reputation alone.

Posted by Clovis on Oct-28-2007 23:30:

Its just lazyness. He has the most personally perfected DJ setup of I think anyone playing out there, and should in theory be able to rock like no other because of it, but when he doesnt put work into his sets and music selection, the end result isnt any better...

He played an all-right set when I saw him earlier this month, but I've seen and come to expect, as other here, FAR more from him...

He can mix boringly in Ableton on a consistent basis? I guess that could constitute as adequate, but not much beyond that.

I disagree, like I just said, he has an amazing DJ platfrom which he doesn't even use to a fraction of its potential. Mixing one track after the other, as smooth and well EQ'd/hormonically sound as it gets, is just not interesting, and while his mixing is always decent, its no where near what it could be...and what he is capable of.

Posted by iammesol on Oct-28-2007 23:42:

Personally I thought he was just way too chilled friday... like his recent EM was by far one of the best sets I've ever heard of, but friday was just... BORING.

Posted by Saint John on Oct-28-2007 23:44:

yeah i have heard some of his sets that are completely banging...and others where he just half assed it kinda.

Posted by Clovis on Oct-28-2007 23:44:

I guess I'm one of the few who didnt like that EM at all.

This is the guy who wowed the world with an amazingly unique debut ableton essential mix, now mixing tracks just about as well as anyone could with a pair of CDJs and jumbling a bunch of recent songs together with what I found to be very inconsistent flow.

Sashas other big project is completing a follow-up to his 2004 mix compilation Involver. Originally scheduled for a release this year, changes in the DJs personal life mean its been put on the shelf until next year.
My wife is pregnant were expecting a boy in November and this blew the release date out of the water, explains Sasha.
However, he admits that hes happy that the release has been postponed.
I feel that if we had rushed it through, it wouldnt have sounded that good, and it was worthwhile to stand back and listen to it from a fresh perspective, says Sasha.
Promising more guitars and a similarly unpredictable tracklisting as the first Involver, the new compilation is due at the start of next summer. Sasha also says that hell be touring extensively to promote Involver 2 and is looking forward to spending a lot more time in the UK.

I don't give a shit about him anymore, largely because I don't really like what he plays these days. He could be an Ableton ninja and I still wouldn't like the tracks he plays.

I'll agree with you on the fact that the mixing was par for the course which it shouldn't be on that EM, especially if you have abelton. I disagree on the flow, however. Even if the tracks weren't the hardest to find (which he was once known for), at the time there were some brand new ones for me, and I liked the flow of the set.

sasha really needs to lay off the boring tech/minimal house snoozefest he's been shitting out of his asshole over the past two years and return to his mid to late 90s trend-setting form...same applies to digweed
