Just had my first gig

I just played out in front of about 60-100 people at some hall. I learned quite a few things about this.

- You are nervous as hell (even if you know almost everyone)
- Don't bring your own equipment unless you want the hassle of connecting everything up (FYI: I brought my whole setup because they didn't have a really good one)
- Clubby Full-On Psytrance is not the greatest to play to adolescents
- Hard anything is the way to get the crowd moving
- You get thirsty super fast
- Requests are really annoying (I only got asked once though by some chick, she said to stop playing "techno" so I said I would start playing Hardstyle)
- Mackie SRM450's overheat easily (or so it seems)
- 2000 watts of power still wasn't loud enough, and distorted
- The mids and highs are drowned out by the bass (really sounds like crap actually)
- People regularly bump the table, ******s.
- If you show energy and go nuts, the crowd will be the same
- If you clap during the clapping parts of hardstyle, everyone will start clapping

Now I ask you this. This other Dj I know was there and was basically my manager the whole time. However he started fiddling around the the EQ's when I was playing. I told him to stop and he said "don't worry about it, I am not going to fuck it up". So I just go with whatever he is doing. He supported me throughout the night and a few times got on the mic to pump up the crowd. So we are near the end of my set and he asks if he could spin a certain track (Dj Issac - Waiting For), I say no no I'll play Silver Bullet by Donkey Rollers. At this point he seemed kind of pissed and dissapointed and left shortly after. I played Silver Bullet and people went apeshit.

Anyways I ask you all now, was it right for me to turn down a fellow DJ (and friend who has invited me a few times to house raves for me to play out) even though it was MY set?

It wasn't flat out wrong of you to not let him play, but it would have been a nice thing to do for a guy who had been helping you out so much.

you should have just let him play a track


it's not like this was your 'magnum opus'

I think it was very wrong of you to not let him play that song, i mean comon its only one song coming from a person who helped you out so much, I would get mad too and leave. If i were you i would apologize to him.

No, it's not wrong to not let him play a track, but considering the circumstances, only if you had been building up towards the track you wanted to play and it would have been the highlight of the night. Otherwise, what nefardec said. But then if you just flat out said no then that does make you kind of an asshole. In your place I would've told the guy to just let me play this important track that I've been building up towards all night and then let him do whatever he wants. Then if he still got mad and left, he would be the asshole for not understanding.

Okay just to clear up some things. This was my first gig and I could not think at all. I could barely even cue up tracks because I was so nervous.

Also he said suggested to me to play hardstyle when I was playing Psy and it would get the floor moving some more. When the last Psy track was playing he suggested playing a massive ch00n such as "Waiting For" and it would make people go apeshit. I say "no no no, Silver Bullet is amazing. Some people say it is one of the best hardstyle songs ever made" *keep in mind here I cannot think clearly at all. I still think it is a damn good track though*.

So I play it and then he says that he wants to play around with the EQ's. I say just leave it. He pretty much just left around then. I cannot remember much from there.


But because I regret it right now, I am very sure that it was a mistake not to let him. I apologized to him and he seems to understand it.

So let this be something to consider when you DJ.

I just had my first edm gig this past saturday. It was a sorority function that had this 'rave' theme to it. They gave me an hour to play whatever I chose to play. The rest of the night (before 10pm and after 11) I was forced to play what they had on CD's, which in my opinion was not in any way shape or form party music, but hey, I was getting paid to play tunes and drink booze.

When my actual set came on, the people who were there (that are actually somewhat into EDM) went ape shit. People were clapping, screaming, jumping, and most importantly dancing! It was amazing. Towards the end of my set I got some stupid bitches asking me to play something non-'techno', but I just ignored her till my time was done. Overall I was very pleased with the outcome, especially since this was the first time I actually played outside of my weekly radio show on campus.

ANYWAY

I don't know if I agree with how you handled your friend. I've got a buddy that has helped me out a shit ton since I moved here, and I've got mad respect for the guy. If he asked me to play a track for him it would be the least I could do.

Vibrasphere(Progressive Psytrance) is closer to Astral Projection(The album Amen was what he was refering to... the one with the strong progressive influence) then Hardstyle is to Full on Psytrance. I don't really understand much of what you just said.

But... this gig was my first one. I had a general idea of a tracklist (mostly all full-on psy). But after a few tracks the crowd didn't seem to enjoy it as much. So I experimented and threw on an old Man With No Name track (Floor Essence). I think the bass got to them more and they really seemed to eat it up.

So going with the advice my friend gave me I changed it up to hardstyle after it was done.

So what are you trying to get to? I suck as a DJ and you are so god damn superior and everying sucks your penis when you mix?

This thread was just for the question of what I did to my friend was right or wrong and also advice for others with their first gigs.

If the requesters are very annoying just ask them to put what track they want on a 20$ bill.

I'm having my first "gig" this saturday...if you could call it that. A friend of mine is turning 25 and is having a party for like 50 persons.

ANyhow, I haven't DJed before..and I think most of you will laugh out loud when I say that the "equipment" I use is my laptop and my mixer which is a Hercules MK2 DJ console =P ...but hey, it works fine for me this first time!

The music I will play is mostly electro house, which is what is played in the Stockholm club scene. I do not think ppl will appreciate if I play my favourite trance tracks.

Do you perhaps have any tips or "do's" and "don't" for me? =)

Just have fun I messed my 1st gig up even tho it went ok music wise I did not have much fun to serious, then at a house party I let go and had a much better time.

Dont let drunk (women) near your setup tend to spill their cordial drinks everywhere.
