-- i need feedback on an idea

i need feedback on an idea

so I have been compiling tracks over the past few months and am just about ready to start putting stuff together for a new promotional mix.

the thing is, I have become aware that i have a sort of duality in my musical taste and I want this mix to deal with that

so i can't decide whether I want to make two cd length mixes that are sort of opposite ends of the spectrum, each being stylistically homogenous, or if I want to make one two hour mix that goes between the two extremes a few times

the two cd set or the two hour mix will be called "chiaroscuro" if that cues you into at all what I am doing. it's sort of an accumulation of my experiences over the past few months and an idea about a lifestyle and also just something i am interested in terms of artwork and architecture. light and space, light and space. light and shadow create depth

what's more interesting to you? practically speaking, two cds is better for promoting myself, but I prefer to listen to longer mixes and also i like mixes that have variety. on the other hand sometimes I feel like I want to try to have a tighter sound in cd mixes because I tend to go all over the place

opinions anyone?

edit - maybe what I do is make a two cd mix which blends both the "chiaro" (light/clear) and "oscuro" (dark/cloudy) but maybe cd one is a little more chiaro and cd two is a little more oscuro.

but if i have two cds, besides being easier to share with people and give out, it would make two mixes with different moods which might be nice - mixes for different occasions

Don't think that all the personal influences will be given two shits about by the listner.

I suggest you just do what you enjoy most, and through that the listener will enjoy.

neither could i care less

it's really a simple question of practicality for me

Practicality = 1 CD!

Go with the flow......!

i will have been without my decks for four months when i get back from europe and have been buying music like a maniac.

alot of djs have been relesaing mix compiliations with a duality of themes.. Sander K's This is Sander K had disc1 which is more techy/deep oriented while disc2 was harder and funkier (afaik.. all i rememeber it was two styles, sod ont hold me to do those exact styles)
Marco V's latest combi nations had a Before CD1 and After Cd2
there are many more examples im sure

i'd rather listen to one long set that flows exactly like you want than two different sounding cd length sets.
altho it would be nice to have a set that could fit on a cd as many people still like to burn and listen to cds.
it's a really though decision really as you could make a better set but then all the people who like to listen sets off cds would probably not listen to the set.
and it's always easier to promote yourself with a cd than some file as cds play anywhere.
i guess it depends most on what you want to do with the set:
1. make the best possible set
2. promote yourself

roffllllllllllllllllllllll

"artistic" wanker factor x99999

do you wear a beret`? i think you need to start wearing a beret`. Also, you need to start saying "artiste" with the e on the end.

A stripey long sleeved shirt helps too:

Really, thats the best advice I can give. Otherwise people might start thinking you're a fraud.

save it for the cor, you shriveled gonad.

do you feel big now?

that's just low, man. a cheap shot.

ps no beret, but several of said shirts

another option is to do both and then decide which one you like better

Posted by Beatflux on Nov-12-2007 16:13:

ONe is more practical and it won't get lost as easily as two will.

Posted by the_gamemaster on Nov-12-2007 21:24:

Some people do one warm up mix and one peak time mix, to show they are comfortable playing both, but it depends on the style of music you play. Is one type more energetic than the other? You never actually said what they were

Posted by nefardec on Nov-12-2007 21:41:

i'm probably just going to make two cds.

one will be chiller and one will be darker and more dancefloor

thanks to those who gave their advice

Also possibly see what everyone else likes better too.

Just because a mix is longer then 1 cd doesn't mean you can't burn it to cd... just means the listener will have to swap discs... big deal.

Screw CDs. Lets hear a 3 hour mix of all different styles. If you must do CDs, do 2.

now i'm undecided. either way, i'm sure it'll be awesome. i've loved everything you've put out so far.

Posted by nefardec on Nov-16-2007 23:02:

yeah clovis made me lean towards a longer mix.

i'll work it out later i guess when i have some decks in front of me again

Posted by InDeepSpace on Nov-16-2007 23:09:

Do one mix with a nice evolution. I like it when people do mixes which sound completely differen at the end compared to the beginning. For me it promotes the skillz of a DJ if he could deal with different types of music. But of course there still must be a good flow which puts nthe different sounds together.

Posted by mize on Nov-17-2007 03:48:

Do Two!

why? Do you like to dance? Is it dance music you are mixing? I have plans on Writing A topic on this, but i have don't get my ass over the edge jet but in time!

This is it. ENERGY when you start to mixing dark and light (songs) It feels like you running up and down up and down (metaphorical), When you dance, won't work on a floor! what I wont is balanced set with peaks!
This is the core!

god luck

make both CDs... and the glue them together to make a 'flipper' CD.

j/k
