the one who made the interview seems to be obsessed with the DJ Mag list.
this results in an overall really boring interview.

Your live sets and ASOT radio show has grown so diverse, all the genres of EDM can be found from minimal to house, why has this evolution occurred ?

What the hell? How can anyone think ASOT is diverse in any way?

Oh man. Where was I bashing trance? Also, I don't care if the show seems 'deverse' to you; the truth is that in the grand scheme of things, ASOT is pretty narrowminded. Listen to the 2nd CD of Agoria's In Controls mix-comp to see what diversity means.

I love the part in the interview where Armin talks about djs 'being risky' and playing a Dubfire tune here and there as if that was the most adventurous deed a dj could do. I always thought he talked like that in the interviews because of the fans, but this time he sounded like a complete dumbass.

Well, it isn't entirely as single-minded as the title would suggest. You'll occasionally find a healthy sprinkling of diversity (even if it hovers closer to Trance than not) at the beginning and perhaps the end of a typical ASOT episode, but those productions rarely get much airtime, though they wind up being the highlight of the show (I feel). Interestingly enough, it's when Armin isn't banging away with his signature Epic/Melodic Trance sound that he's far more interesting.

You do understand what diversity is right? Armin clearly thinks Dubfire and diversity are related. Pity him.

I didn't say that ASOT and Armin embody the abstraction of diversity, but I am saying that it isn't all one eye-rolling epic breakdown after another. However, his style certainly isn't as remarkably diverse as the interviewer would appear to believe.

Just because Armin dropped on Oxia's "Domino" doesn't make the show or his sets a showcase of diverse music, though I can't necessarily leverage a criticism against this. He really has no pretense of spinning anything other than Trance, and Epic Trance in particular. Although he occasionally branches out, his take on Trance is what his fans expect, and that's what he orients his efforts towards playing. Whether or not this is actually a good idea is a different matter.

Perhaps he'd be better off playing something that interests him (reference to question 1 & 2), as usually, some kind of connection to the music you drop, helps make it a decent set.

Then again, ambient weird quirky DJs, don't end up at number 1 do they.

Posted by Paradox Lost on Nov-12-2007 00:07:

My favorite example of Armin (sort of) expanding his horizons is the second disc to ASOT 2004 (and to a lesser extent, the first disc to ASOT 2006). He seemed to be more focused upon selecting tracks that play into a larger sense of theme and atmosphere as opposed to simply compiling a list of popularly received Trance productions. Everything smoothly unfolds through different moods and sounds, and even though it wound up loosing its footing somewhat towards the latter half, everything up to and including the first 5 tracks are always a pleasure to listen to.

Although I don't recall many people raving about it, it's some of the best work he's ever done, and I wish he would take risks like that more often.

id like to hear a set of his quirky ambient music sounds like?

His answer is the best, though...

quote:
I DJ for the crowd, not for myself, if it was for me the music would be real ambient, weird sounding. These track lists are for the crowd.

In other words, "I know what the masses want. They want pop crap. In order for me to stay popular, I must churn out pop crap."

quote:
I want to make sure the people are dancing and into the music, sometimes you have to play a track thats different, so the crowd doesnt get bored and the energy level stays high. DJs have to take risks sometimes and that can mean playing new stuff, or different types like a minimal sound or a Dubfire track. Its all about the energy in the club; I have to work for them. I read reviews on forums and peoples comments on the track lists and I dont feel just by reading that list you can get a feel for what is was like to be there or why I played that track at that moment. Thats what people have to understand, a DJ has to do whats right at that moment, to make the people dance. Im very open-minded about music. The trance people on the forums have to understand that trance is not a static phenomenon, its something that moves and changes, its very dynamic. When I look at Beatport and they classify a song as electro or minimal, who decided that, why cant it be trance. If the song rocks a crowd, if it makes the dance floor move, then thats what counts, not what style it is.

And he pretty much contradicted himself there. "Why can't a track be called Trance? ... Labeling genres is shit, don't do it."

For once I agree with you.

That's fine, I wish Armin luck in whatever he does and as long as the people like it, good for him. But for the love of god, don't call his show 'so diverse' and don't use words like 'minimal' and 'house' for that matter if you don't know how broad range of music do they represent (this was of course the interviewer's fault).

Posted by MichaelBoogerd! on Nov-12-2007 10:12:

Maybe the interviewer got those "genre names" straight from Armin's direct quote in DJ Mag. On the "picture" of the number 1 profile in giant letters (p.33 i think?) "I SPIN EVERYTHING, ELECTRO, MINIMAL AND HOUSE NOT JUST TRANCE"

Posted by djdelusional on Nov-12-2007 12:15:

the interview wasn't that great.

lol @ all the arguing

The hating in this thread is nauseating. You people would complain that armin's shit isnt brown enough for you, christ.

Posted by XaNaX on Nov-12-2007 20:19:

I would have asked him why he felt it was necessary to flog Anthem on his show as much as he did over the summer
