DJs that mix using ONLY heaphones

I just posted a question in the DJ booth in relation to mixing using headphones only and it got me thinking...other than Hernan Cattaneo, are there any others that use only their headphones to mix???

dont see the point of what?

Most dj's use the cup method. don't really know anyone that only uses headphones. I enjoy only headphones but honestly don't know how i'd do it cuz there are some places where I don't know he'd be able to hear it.

yeah i know, i began using that method cos the place where i played my first few gigs had no monitors...it has stuck with me ever since

Posted by Blake_Jarrell on Nov-13-2007 03:14:

ive learned both ways (mix in headphones and mix with monitors) because some places have monitors that i care not to comment on

Posted by justin on Nov-13-2007 03:18:

I've always wanted to teach myself how to mix with just headphones but i don't see the point either. I guess cuz i've always been fortunate enuf to have a monitor. No monitor means I'll just have to blow chunks.

Posted by iammesol on Nov-13-2007 03:18:

I used to be able to do both, but ever since I've moved into a dorm where we can't really have loud speakers, I can only do headphones only now. It's good to know both, and I believe safer for your ears to do cup-monitor. When you only do headphones, you have to crank the volume unbelievably to hear.

what about using noise cancelling headphones in loud enviroments?

That would work against you, imo.

While the headphones are key to beatmatching and even getting a feel for what EQ'ing needs to be done, and how much fading etc... You have to be able to hear as much of the environment as possible, and make use of all the tools at your disposal.

IE: Headphones/Monitors/The Actual System.

At least that's what I think, don't exactly have much experience, but ya.

I don't know of any DJs who DON'T use sound cancelling headphones

Posted by TranceArmstrong on Nov-13-2007 04:28:

well at home since i don't like to blast the volume I usually go headphone only. When I'm fortunate enough to get the chance to play out, usually I will try it headphone only, but turn the volume down low enough so that I can still hear the monitors.

i guess it just depends on how i'm feeling for each song. sometimes i mix it up. If I'm ever caught in the midst of a trainwreck I will usually put the phones on both ears and crank the phones volume way up until I'm back on track

with cds i beatmatch using only the headphones.

with vinyl i beatmatch using the cup method just to get a feel of the beats.then i clean up the beat in the headphones. so i really dont use the monitor method.

personally i prefer the headphone only method.i tried both ways and just found myself gravitating towards the headphone only method.

but it depends on which headphones your using to do it with ive found out.sony 7509 and certain other sony headphones are junk when it comes to headphone only mixing.they cant take the level boost and eventually become distorted and useless for djing with.i went through 3 pairs of sonys before i relized i needed to upgrade.now i use a pair from technics.great pair of headphones. no complaints at all and ive used them at clubs with large systems and they sound great beatmatching using just the headphones.its all in what pair you got!!

He's not talking about regular insulated cans that work like earmuffs, he is talking about actual "noise cancellers" as made by companies like Bose.

They monitor the incoming sounds from outside and generate a reverse tone which negates a large portion of the offending noise. They work best for repetitive noises such as the hum of an aircraft engine etc. Therefore they may or may not be good for DJing. Perhaps they would do a good job getting rid of the kick drum, but not so much the melodies?

Never even tried a pair of noise cancelling headphones, but I suspect it's all a big load of shit really.

Posted by djdelusional on Nov-13-2007 14:01:

had to do both.

but that being said I much prefer monitors.

Posted by nchs09 on Nov-13-2007 14:12:

when i start to mix i use 1 ear.... once im mixing out of one track is the volume on it is very soft.. i use only headphones...

Posted by denys envy on Nov-13-2007 14:50:

i learned both.

headphones for the bedroom DJ (respecting the neighbors late at night).

headphones also come in usefull if monitors are shit (blake touched on this) or lagging or badly placed, otherwise i'd rather use the monitor.

i just use headphones to beat-match/cue up, once both tracks are going and i'm in the mix - i'll take my headphones off and go off what's coming out of the monitor/system.

Posted by DiegoParra32 on Nov-13-2007 16:51:

learn to do both just to be safe.

Me.

I never trust the monitors in any venues.

Plus most of my bedroom DJing was having to keep it headphones...because someone in the house was always sleeping and had to get up early in the morning, blah blah blah.

I don't find decent monitors in most venues I've played.

Im actually quite surprised with the response to this thread...i honestly didnt realise that so many people do the majority of their mixing in the headphones only. I thought I was the odd one out cos of all the people I know use the monitors to mix.

Someone said earlier that they use the one ear in/one ear out when mixing the next track in and Im the same. When I am bringing the track in I use the headphones only to make sure that the beats are in-line. Once in-line, I then bring the track in while listening to the monitor in one ear and having the headphones set to the incoming track in the other ear. When I was asking if people mixed using headphones only, I meant for mainly beatmatching.
