Bad News!

no, not a parroty thread, i had a bad bad day....

I went mountain biking solo today on a trail i've ridden many times. i went over a large rock and veered too far left hooking my front tire on a rock sticking out. i went over the handle bars and thought i landed ok. kinda just turned to my right and managed to get one cleat un-clipped.

but i stood up and saw a white bloodied mess on the palm-side of the last knuckle of my left pinkie. i immediately thought compound fracture. so i gathered myself and finished my last 2 miles to the car. it stayed surprisingly numb from endorphins so all the bumps i felt didn't hurt too much, but it still felt like someone was constantly stepping on my pinkie, i guess the same kind pain as when you bend your finger backwards. i put a band-aide over the bloody part at the car and headed to the ER.

after about 2 hours i get x-rays and am given a room. the nurse guy says there is good news and bad news....good news is i didn't break anything, the bad news is i didn't break anything. turns out i dislocated my pinkie so much that it poked out of the skin. so he numbs it up, cleans the rocks and dirt out of it, pops it out of place and resets it. also the skin rip takes 4 stitches to close it all up. he puts a huge splint on it and wraps it up. then i get to say hello to a script for loratab + antibiotics.

this should set me back 8 weeks er so kinda sucks cause i just interviewed for a job, but i hope this splint on my pinkie wont affect their decision. plus i cant ride for a while now, it as my main source of exercise. but i get to see an orthopedic guy some time this week so i will see what he says. hopefully he has a sexier splint that this huge metal thingie.

well that was my veterans day.

I'm pretty sure a splint on your pinkie won't affect their judgment. Just tell them the story, they might actually find it pretty brave of you

\Unless you're going to interview for a left/right hand model...then yer pretty much fucked.

2 in the pink,

yea, but you might have an image of a pinkie splint as a lil thing...this is a 12 inch x 1/2 inch wide metal strip around a gauzed pinkie with an aces bandage around it and my wrist. bulky

but yes it was brave and i am sure the orthopedic has a small splint

i should try to get the x-rays and post em.

really sucks dude. hope that shit heals quicker. some guy I knew fucked his leg up really bad, and like a month after everything (they told him not to do shit for like 6 months) he went back at it. perfectly fine still, he suggested to just eat healthy and exericse sleep well, ect. it seems counter-productive to me but it seemed to work for him. id kinda trust advice of a doctor over an mtb biker thou..

just curious what kind of bike do you have? and where do you usually go riding?

Posted by Boomer187 on Nov-13-2007 07:08:

its an 08 specialized xc fsr.

and surprisingly las vegas has a lotta trails around it. I usually go to these cottonwood trails thats are about 20 mins west of the strip. they are somewhat flat, but we will climb about 1,500 feet er so I think, but there are some steep inclines and aggressive downhills.

and luckily its only a pinkie for me, a leg would suck a lot more. glad ur buddy recovered quickly.

Ouch man, that sucks!

If you're worried about the interview thing, just mention somewhere how you pwnd yourself mountain biking, as opposed to street brawling while under the influence of everything available.

What job did you apply for btw?

tr00f, i didn't realize til the questioning at the ER that I could have been knocked out. luckily i never ride without a helmet.

and the job is a supervisor of a money count room for a cab company. but they are mainly hiring me for my stats knowledge, so ill be running stats on data for side projects, i imagine in 6 months ill be an analyst for em doin stats. best thing...its only 4 days a week

Posted by mezzir on Nov-13-2007 07:24:

Yeah coming from someone who's known a fair number of mountain bikers, you came out lucky. still sucks though :/

hah k so this one guy i used to work with was just generally stupid. and he knew it, and was happy about it. when he started workign where i did, he had had 9 concussions to date. 5 months later when he quit, he was up to 12. Anyways this one dude was like his idol, some crazy mountain biker. He was telling me that this dude had endo'ed so many times and fractured/sprained/broken his wrists and hands so many times, that when he endo'ed instead of putting his hands out to soften the fall he'd tuck them behind his back and just go in headfirst. showed me a video of it one time too. Oh yeah, the dude i worked with had a portable dvd player and he'd watch biking videos while working. Did i mention we worked delivery? yeah, driving around town watching a dvd player chillin on the dash.

I just got a total gangster scene in my head, with you sitting around in a room with all these dudes counting money, mafia style.

Side projects? Yeah

But 4 days a week is sweet, if the pay is good. More time you can spend riding your... err..

Hey, this broken finger thing had better not mess with zee radio show

ur telling me!!!!!! i ope it doesn't either, ill try.

and yea, i don't try crazy things while riding, 12 concussions is insane...so i figure my injuries will be minimal...but damn, looking at your pinkie bone is freaky as shit...especially knowing no one is within 2 miles of you. puts a damper on my epic riding ideas...those big 30 milers in the middle of nowhere.

smart man....

... and I don't think it'll affect their judgment whatsoever, as long as you can still do the work.

wow.. sorry to hear about the pinky...

i think the bandaged finger thing is kinda cool for an interview b/c its an obvious ice breaker and immediately shows you have a life outside of stats... i wouldnt mention that you do roomraves every thursday..

good luck on the money counting s
