90% of djs play pirated music?

This SMH article says that up to 90% of Sydney club djs play music illegally downloaded from the internet. If its happening in Sydney, I don't see why its not happening elsewhere around the world. Any thoughts?

Thoughts? Yeah. Those guys can go fuck themselves...they're not DJs.

Seriously.

Pay for your fucking shit.

My banks hate me because of all the times I've bought $200-300 worth of wax/CDs/Downloads (together in one big order that is), and have called to ask if someone had stolen my cards and gone on a shopping spree at "Juno.net"... "You mean juno.co.uk?" ... "Right sir, that's it"... "actually that WAS me that bought all that"... "Oh sir, I see, when will you be paying your bill?!?!"...

well, since djs get paid to play at venues, they should purchase the music.

While illegal downloads have become somewhat of a nescessary evil on the electronica side of the music industry, "DJ's" that don't pay for their tracks or at the least get their promo material from reputable sources (ie artist/label) are hacks and will never make it anywhere. Dj's get paid good money because of the costs entailed in said profession, almost in the same way a doctor will be paid better than an average working class individual due to the investment of time and money in his training.

Made simple, not one reputable promoter will book some guy who plays shit quality mp3's on a cracked copy of ableton. While the industry has moved forward in terms of Cd's becoming more widespread and popular, (this is an imo) i tend to notice those who play records actually seem to work on a more consistent basis.

In many countries there has been talk of making DJ'ing a licensed profession, requiring documentation and receipts to be mandatory on top of the licensing fees to actually play the music out(clubs have to pay for this too). The way the music industry is pursuing pirates these days this scenario seems to be looking more and more like the course of action that will be taken

Bottom line is: The best things in life may be free, but to play you gotta pay. Get caught you will never amount to anything. Some may argue music is made to be heard, but the day it stops being made or a it becomes less accesssible, many people would probably look back and wish they had spent the 2 bucks.

Makes sense to me!

Posted by Domesticated on Nov-15-2007 10:57:

I'd tend to agree with that article.

I disagree that 90% of jocks play pirated music all the time, however many will steal tracks unavailable for sale (i.e new Pryda tracks), and play these for a month then never end up paying for them.

Melbourne is much the same as Sydney, and DJ piracy is absolutely rampant down here. 3-4 reasonably popular DJs have admitted to me that they steal on a regular basis.

Posted by trancey_spacer on Nov-16-2007 02:09:

I don't know whether 90% are, but still, say if half that number did? Thats still a lot. And if its happening in AUS, why wouldn't it be happening everywhere else?

Posted by Spacey Orange on Nov-16-2007 02:18:

because not everyone is as wretched as the Aussies.

Posted by Ted Promo on Nov-16-2007 02:35:

many do simply to play older tracks that they can't readily purchase by legal means.

Posted by Igaryok on Nov-16-2007 02:44:

I can see why some bedroom DJ's do it. But if you're actually playing out and making money off of other people's music then at least thank them by buying their music.
