[Euro Qualifying] Russia - Israel

Funny how the future of English football in Euro '08 and the fate of their manager gently (ever so gently) rests on a game they're not even playing.

Russia does have a poor away record but I fully expects to be celebrating come Saturday night, for 5 reasons.

1. Guus Hiddink.
2. Benayoun is out.
3. Guus Hiddink.
4. Remaining game is against Andorra.
5. King Hiddink, Goose, etc.

W00t!

wooo we're in the spotlights

i could easily see russia cocking it up to be honest, but then again england arent much better they have to beat croatia

forgot to mention we also get our #1 goalkeeper back from injury.

Israel is theoretically a good team, they just have a horrible mentality and always lost when the stakes were high. Since tomorrow's game is totally irrelevant for them I actually think they might be free to play as they wish and also the young substitues will do everything in their power to prove themselves.

prediction: 1-1

Isreal is strong at home... this will be quite a match I can assure you. I'll be in a wedding in NYC when the match comes on/during - but I do have a friend on text duty to update me throughout.

Going to keep the celly on silent and glance at it periodically.

Thank you very much Israelis! Although I've been advocating McClaren be sacked, you never know now...England should qualify and could even contend next June.

If they cant pull out a draw against Croatia on Wednesday then I just won't know what the fuck to say.

Thanks again Israeli...looks good on Hiddink too.

im shocked. looks like we can only win when we have nothing at stake...damn, im impressed...

Doesnt matter now. England got owned by Croatia, so Russia's in the Euro 2008 finals. A miracle for sure. Big thanks to the Croatian team that put up one hell of a game ... I kinda thought that the bookies and money would cause Croats to play poorly to collect the cash. But I was wrong. Croatia is definitely one of the soccer powerhouses in Europe.

I'm just overjoyed that Russia has made it to the Euro 2008.

ohh i dunno... how about being a shit team and getting to the finals as a host???

Posted by TranceGiant on Nov-23-2007 16:15:

lol

let's not change the subject here for a sec.: The draws against Croatia were mostly owed to stable posts(I think Croatia hit them some 9 times in total). The win over England in Moscow was one of the luckiest, least deserved results I've ever witnessed in football (referee handed it to you on a silver platter). You got badly owned by England at Wembley, you showed a miserable performance in Israel, and you beat the officially worst team in Europe (Andorra) with 1 goal difference. C'mon, with all due respect, don't tell me it was a glorious triumph. It was rather a mix between luck and a horrific English squad.

As far as Austria is concerned. There's been a campaign here calling for the withdrawal of the participation of Austria's national team and I'm in total support for that. It'd be a nice sign of hospitality to allow one team (which would be better than Austria in any case) to participate, while not risking worldwide humiliation next summer. Too bad that's utopic

Well we went through a qualifying campaign and made it. Yes Russia played terribly in more than one game but can you honestly say that every team that has ever went to the big stage in either Euro or WC deserved it?

I have no pretenses about Russia being one of the elite teams on the continent or the world, but we qualified, fairly. No matter how much "luck" was involved, I am completely satisfied with the result. Because this summer I get to watch my team compete in Euro '08, which is more than can be said for numerous fans across the world.

On a further note, I think host nations should go through qualifying just as anyone else. Give them the automatic birth but still make them play. So, for example, if they finish on the bottom they still go through, if they are to finish top or second of the group, the next (two) team(s) get the birth to the finals.

Come on, don't be that negative, it's not like you guys would ever lose 7-0 to Turkey or anything.
