Saudi gang-rape victim is jailedt

You read right VICTIM IS JAILED.

Punishment

She gets:

200 lashes and a six-month prison sentence.

They get:

Prison terms ranging from just under a year to five years. Or in other words some got less than a year.

Crime

She:

Was in a car with a man she was not related to.

They:

Gang raped her 14 times.

This news article disagrees with my delicate isolationist social sensibilities. I SAY NUKE 'EM ALL.

I lived in Saudi Arabia for 13 years and remember the restrictions. The only time when unrelated girls and guys could be in the same vehicle was on the bus to my American school in Riyadh, which had to be chaperoned by 2 bus monitors (parent volunteers).

Even the Muslim school that some of the kids in my "compound" (explanation available) attended required separate buses for guys/girls.

Yeah, different society and religion so different rules. The stoning, etc. wouldn't happen to a foreigner because foreigners are treated with a separate set of rules (unless it's murder or drug trafficking...then it's chop-chop square (explanation available)). But the locals know the rules and the medieval consequences so if they partake in these activities, they will be punished. Premarital sex is punishable by death from stoning, so at least the gang-rape victim wasn't put to death .

My trivial understanding of the law is that the victim was not punished for being raped, but for being in the car (and I don't have the details of the story but I'm sure there is more to the story than simple physical presence in the same car; there might be proof of some wrong-doing other than sex (which would be punishable by death); unless there WAS sex and the court was being lenient by just lashes and brief jail time).

Anyway, too many ifs for me and that's my $0.02.
