What are some MUST HAVE VST's (Soft synths/effects/etc)

For Trance/Dance/Electronica Music?

From what research I have done, Rapture is pretty popular, as well as Dimension Pro.

I know Battery is also a must have for drums since it makes life much easier.

Also Camel space for gating effects etc. (But I am not sure since I have never tried it)

Your input is appreciated. I am in the process of getting some gear/software together, so need some input!

Thanks!!

ZET3A

Oh yeah, forgot to add Z3ta+

I have that on my PC right now. Hopefully I can get it to work on the Mac once I switch over as well.

z3ta+ is Windows only according to their website.

+1 for Nexus
Also, Hypersonic 2 is a must-have for me!

These are my essential plugins, and they're all free.

VSTi:
Synth1
Xhip
KarmaFX Synth
(Don't expect great presets with these plugins. They're VERY capable synths nonetheless.)

Effects:
Basslane
All GVST plugins
BuzMaxi 3 (Surprisingly good master limiter)
Nyquist EQ
All KarmaFX plugins

Arturia Minimoog V

Vaz Modular
Nexus
Albino 3
FM8

Albino is a definite must-have. Blue, which is designed by the same guy, Rob Papen, is somewhat similar, but has pretty solid presets. Vanguard is a nice synth to work with because it is very straightforward and produces crisp sounds.

I don't believe there's any fx or synths that are must haves honestly. Figure out what you need. What synths you'd go for is entirely up to what sonic flavour you're after. I have predator and sylenth1 among other older vsti synths, and those are really good, and should cover most of your needs. The new synth from tone2 should be essential though.

For me
Albino
Blue
Battery
Waves bundle

Posted by echosystm on Nov-17-2007 01:05:

instruments:
v-station
korg legacy collection
nexus
fm8

effects:
wavearts masterverb, trackplug, multidynamics & final plug
basslane
camelspace
camelphat

schwa spectro < Probably the coolest plugin I have, I don't think anything else like it exists? It shows you the frequency graph, synced to the host transport, and allows you to edit frequencies across time by drawing in little boxes. For example, if there is a bell sound at "30 seconds" that you dont like, you can go to 30 seconds in spectro, draw a box around the sound and mute it or adjust the gain.

Atmosphere

Superwave P8
V-Station
FM8 - or something like it (I use Linplug's Octopus)

I still use my Vanguard, I find it suitable... the Nexus seems to be all the rave, and you might want to fork out the extra for that instead if the demo suits you better.

Pro-53 (I only have a demo, and I would purchase this baby for CPU effeciency alone).

ReFX Nexus - investment of the year.

i agree with korg legacy collection, polysix and ms 20 are very good.

Posted by kitphillips on Nov-18-2007 02:28:

For me:

Native instruments Komplete for synths
sonalksis and IK multimedia for effects

A lot of people used to use Z3ta, but I think its a bit passed its time now... also has no mac support which is its greatest weakness... Great synth though

Rapture and dimension were supposed to be the next big thing, but not that many people seem to use them still I think..? Oh, and camelspace is not really essential at all, its a bit gimmicky.

Waves are used by a lot of people but I don't like them, Rob Papens Albino is also considered a must have by a lot of people, but I don't use it much these days. ReFX synths are controversial on the whole, a lot of people say vanguard is awful, others say it is aweworthy

The main effects used in trance are delays reverbs, EQs, compressors, phasers, chorus and flange. If you have them then your probably set.

I love spectrasonics

Trilogy and Atmosphere are awesome

Posted by PDM on Nov-18-2007 09:43:

For me it all depends on the music genre that you want to produce your music as.

For Trance:

V-Station
Z3TA+
Hypersonic 2
Sampletank XXL
Rapture

FX

PSP Vintage Warmer
Izotope Ozone 3.0
Waves L2

========

For downtempo:

Synths:

Absynth 3 (or 4)
Hypersonic 2
Dimension
Sampletank XXL

Well for synths it's

sylenth1 - Va Sounds
New synth from tone 2 - To cover mostly non va sounds & sound design
Ross Baker Supersaw v2 emb for Reaktor - All Supersaw Sounds

Access Virus - Not really used to much however for the trance I like most ( Think Gatecrasher 2001 eg Disco Tech Generation Album ) it's sound is just spot on.

Also have v station and vanguard. Not my go to synths anymore but I've spent a lot of time with them and both have their merits and I know them inside out.

V Station has a great sound but the 8 note poly really ruins it for me. Vanguards down fall for most is also it's greatest strength for me as that metallic sound is great for saw pads.

Effects - URS!!! Only personal onion but I prefer to waves.

Romplers - Couldn't work with Nexus but I have plenty of others and more to come over the next few months from east west & bela d.

What I'm really after at the mo is a decent standalone Chorus

..and not being the regular douche bags some of you are on a daily basis

Posted by supernewbie on Dec-11-2007 01:23:

please avoid z3ta it makes only flangy supersaws and the filter is very bad for supersaws

Posted by DJ Robby Rox on Dec-11-2007 04:42:

Synths I use:

Z3ta (for mostly leads and pads)
Pro-53 (mostly bass, seldomly leads)
FM-7 (for only bass)
V-Station (leads & bass)
Albino 3 (everything, seems to have all the sounds I can't get with z3ta)
Vanguard (sometimes bass, gates & arps, but MOSTLY I use vanguard to layer a synth from z3ta to thicken the sound)
Sytrus (the only synth I really know how to program, I can get a wide variety of sounds with this one but I particularly love the pads and crisp synths)
Toxic III (has a sharp overtone to everything, use sometimes for thos nasty leads)
Poizone (mostly arps)
Absynth 3 (for my weird intro, outro and sweep sounds)
Minimoog (love this little dude, nice sounds for bass)
