I just illegaly downloaded a track.... your views?

I saw it on beatport, it was territory restricted.

I went to Juno, Audiojelly etc etc. and it wasn't available.

So I googled it to see if I might possibly be able to find a store that sold it. I was crying out to pay for this tune. But alas, I found nowhere.

But I did find a place that was showing a link to a rapidshare page offering it for free.

My dilema: do I wait for an undisclosed amount of further time for this track to be made available in my country (I've been trying to buy it, on and off, for about 2 months now), or do I just say "Fuck it - I've tried my hardest to pay but the bastards want to make it difficult for me so I'll just 'steal' it."

I think you all can guess what I did.

What are your views on this?

If I can't buy the song, I'll go download it elsewhere.
Once the song becomes available in your country then go purchase it. That's what I've been doing.

It is what it is.

If you're unable to purchase something that is for sale (mostly due to exactly what you described), then I'm not going to look down on you for downloading it. The only problem occurs when you spin it out, but if you just play it in your bedroom then no, you're not an asshole.

I'm gonna try and email labels directly now and ask for a copy explaining that I want to pay for it...

Records labels don't choose not to sell it to you. That wouldn't make any sense. The reason for territory restrictions is because a different label has the rights to sell it in your country.
You really think labels would for just no reason what so ever choose to make less money?


It is just annoying to constantly hear people go on about it, I know it is shit, but at least blame the right person.

They obviously wouldn't sue you for asking to buy 'a' track. However, if you admittedly tell them you illegally downloaded there track and now want to pay for it, they may have a case on there hands.

I think he means if you told them you downloaded it illegally because it wasn't available Clovis.

And no, i applaud you, if the record company is dumb enough to have territory restrictions, then too bad for them, they missed out on your money, when it becomes available for you to buy, then buy it, if not, their loss for being too hard to deal with.

I HATE territory restrictions!!!

I guess they might sell individually, but that is still illegal on their behalf.

ya, imo if it's a big label i doubt they're going to risk making $1 off of you and do something illegal. good luck with it and i agree with most people, i too am willing to pay for all of my tracks, but some are just impossible to get to and it's the only way. besides, the only person that hears any of my mixes is me anyway, so i really don't see how it would hurt anybody

territory restrictions is in some odd way funny, Its Okay for a Record store to import Wax from territory restrictions label, But Not for costumer ho want to buy it online!

i think it has to do with the fact that the wax is a physical item, and they go out of their way to ship it and import it... where as selling online makes it easily available to the entire globe

The fact that people keep complaining about labels territory restrictions is really start to piss me off.

Can anyone explain why a music label would willingly not sell to a particular region!?!?

Woah, I meant BEFORE having downloaded it illegaly guys. Like, sending them an email and letting them know that you havn't found any way of purchasing it and really want to.

I bet you'd have to be on their promo list for them to send it you. Thats probably the reason theyre not selling it yet.

I had the same issue about a month ago. The first time I heard Umbrella (Sebastian Ingrosso & Steve Angello) @ Space, I fell in looooove with the track. I went CRAZY looking for that track. Beatport had the territory restriction (******S), I then looked in a billion websites to see if I can purchase the download, NOTHING! I did find it, but on vinyl. I dont do vinyl, therefore I was screwed. My last resort was limewire, I found it there @ 320 kbps & the full extended mix for FREE! I produce music msyself, and I do not want to get music for free because I know how much work is put behind making a track, but dam bro if you dont give me the resources to purchase it I have no other choice. I dont blame you @ all for what you did man!

in the end, arent the same people making the $$$ regardless of territory restrictions?
