Laurent Garnier Review

Well, I heard so many good things about Laurent Garnier... so I went to go see him with an open mind. He played a lotttt of great tracks, and just when I was like "fuck yeaaaa I'm totally feeling his style", he would throw in funky 70's disco style songs (especially from 3:30am and on), which I'm really not into. He kept going from disco, to a techy style song... and back & forth. I'm going to go as far as saying that all that disco stuff and drum n bass was a buzz kill for me.

I tried to tough it out as late as possible so I could see a little bit of Droog & Konrad Black at 6am, but I was really sleepy. I should have just stayed home, and woken up at 5:30am to go to Avalon.

The highlight of my night was seeing friends, and alot of the snowboarders (you have to be a snowboarder to know what i mean).

*edit* To make a long story short... if you didn't make it to this, you didn't miss out on much, unless you can tolerate 70's disco. (hi bas & clovis... this is my opinion of course)

Well your opinion is WROOOOOOOOONNNGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!1

Kidding, a lot of people were probably pretty annoyed by the disco house. I however, huge fan of the divas. His set was 11/10. Easily.

The tribal, the deep, the techy, the techno, the classics, the dnb, the classic rock...it all made sense.

And you missed out, DROOG & Konrad in the Spider Room was sick. Work hurts right now

i left by like 3 so i guess ididnt hear any disco, it was pretty fun though. i enjoyed almost everything i heard. i liked how he djs though, going back and forth between songs very quickly and things like that. it was fuckin awesome! anyone know like the 3rd or 4th song he played? it was the first one that got the crowd really going?

Curious as to what is considered 70's disco?

Posted by bas on Nov-19-2007 05:58:

The only disco track he played was Donna Summers - I Feel Love. What Julia is talking about is REALLY funky house and disco house.

Oh OK, thanks.

It's ok, I stopped by Matt & Andrei's house after I got off work yesterday around 3. Clovis and a few others were there... but you had left already.

there are no words to describe this night! except the man has mad skills behind the decks!!!!! he was doing stuff up there that blows any dj away! you have to appreciate all that he was doing and flawlessly moving from one style to the next and back again. i pretty much danced non stop for 6 hours. i haven't had that much fun at avalon ever!!!!! and i have had some pretty insanely fun nights there. so great to see so many TAs and other friends out for this magical night. loved hanging with montie and jeffrey, who made the trip down.

i was fortunate enough to get to meet laurent and get a pic with him at the end. very humble in my opinion and he enjoyed the night!

very good time indeed. so glad i went. now he has ruined me for any other dj set i'm sure, atleast for awhile

I went with high expectations and was horribly, horribly disappointed.

Words cannot describe how atrocious Laurent's set was. It was painful.

I love a Dj who can play a wide variety of genres, but Laurent's set was a disaster.

Yes, he had great mixing and knob twiddling/filtering skills, but they do not make up for his misprogramming and uneven track selection. The poor crowd didn't know what to do.

To the Laurent supporters, don't hate me for saying this, but I thought he was appalling.

HELL YES! You took the words right outta my mouth!!! I remember me and a couple of my friends kept looking at eachother in disgust and kept saying "buzz kill, buzz kill". I felt like he wasn't be consistant and the flow was terrible.

I have to admit though, he looked like he was having a blast up there. He seems like he really has a passion for his music. I thought it was cute how he got on the mic and was singing over that one drum n bass song... "I want you all to feel what I'm feeling". Awww, so adorable. But still, it didn't make up for the tracks that I wasn't into, which was more than 1/2 of his stuff.

*note to self* next time laurent garnier is in town, don't go see him.

It's a message board created by Giles, which is more entertaining and has better subjects than TA.

Laurent = the shit. What other DJ do you know can play so many different genres effortlessly like Laurent? It's like he wasn't trying. He completely blew all barriers away and owned Avalon. All my expectations were surpassed. He is definitely one of the best DJ's I've ever seen, no doubt about that.

lol @ julia - so you post a link to 60+ LG sets in this very forum last week, but you were surprised at what the fuck he played?

did you bother to *listen* to any of the sets you posted lol?

I thought his genre jumping was awesome. That's sort of what he does lol. And saying 'the poor crowd didn't know what to do' is facetious. They danced their asses off

Ya, actually I did listen to one of them and it fucking sucked balls. But my friends told me to come see him anyway, give him a chance, and listen to him with an "open mind"... and that's exactly what i did.

It was easily one of the most epic nights ever, I have ben waiting so long to see the man.. one of the best dj's on the planet, no doubt!

Anyone who says otherwise epic fail's at life and enjoying music. None of this repetitive bleepy bloop shit all night.

"you better like drum and bass, because I fucking LOVE IT!"

^^ WINNER! Then drops DJ Marky, a track from the Brazilian job and the place goes nuts.. It was fucking GRRRRRREAT!

Taj and PvD... well maybe not PvD as he doesnt drop any sort of disco but he does go into breaks/techno/house but not as underground as Gainer I'm sure. I think thats why I go to 1015 every Saturday for Taj as he always keeps it different and fresh. And PvD has so many tracks to choose from on Ableton
