Idea for DAWS - context sensitive tools like Office 2007
If anyone has used Office 2007, you know how less cluttered the interface is because the tools are context-sensitive. For example, you don't see the toolbar for editing charts until you have a chart selected. When you're working with shapes and have a shape selected, the 'shape options' toolbar appears.
I would like to see these kind of features in future DAWs. Click an audio file in your project, and the tools and menus change to audio-specific operations. Same with a midi clip. Less confusion when you need to find the right tool...
The idea of the 'ribbon' in Office 2007 is something I'd like to see not only in DAWs, but in all types of software in the future.
I don't know... maybe I'm just spouting shit...
Discuss..?
Personally, I don't need it. I have more than enough screen space for everything I need. I'm happy about the DAW's I work with, combined with the screen space they offer a good workflow as they are. I'd prefer to see more fresh features or new music production technology.
Mainly talking about Cubase/Nuendo, Ableton & Renoise allthough I sometimes use some other sequencers too.
there are much more important things than this imo.
reaper and logic 8 have probably the best user interfaces of daws available at the moment. ableton is close, but you still can't access all your plugins directly from the main window.
cubase and sonar need to redesign to the single screen paradigm. it's 11ty times better.

) and then drag. Although Logic's Mixer is directly accessible, you also need to click once for the context menu and a second time to choose.
cubase interface annoys the ballix out of me at times. you'd think for a sequencer being so popular and used by many professional artists they would have sorted it out by now.
