Satan (eek!) Running RED lights.

I don't know what's up in your part of the world, but here in the Toronto area I've noticed that more and more ppl are running red lights. It's fucking getting outta control. I can't go anywhere without someone running a red light. I've seen near collisions too many times. Many lights are completely red before the car is at the intersection.

What's it like where you are?

DC can be bad too - especially when they run the light but don't have any room to go past the intersection, so they end up just easing into the middle of the intersection in the middle of a red, completely blocking the road going the perpendicular direction.

I see it a lot.
I tend to rev my engine high up when I see it happen, although I should probably stop that.

Oh that fucking drives me up the wall. I'm thinking like "HELLO you didn't know the light was going to change? And the cars aren't moving in front of you?".

Idiots!

Posted by shaw on Nov-24-2007 17:36:

morons everywhere are doing it more & more. they've even changed some of the lights here so there's almost a 10-second delay of all-reds, to accommodate these geniuses.

Thankfully I don't see that happening too often here, but I live in a pretty small city so it would worry me if it happened here often. I almost got hit by a car once when the driver didn't care about the freaking lights, that was when I was so young that I though that the green light automatically means that I can walk across the street.. My mother was there to shout at me not to go and further and the car went from probably 20 cm from me so it was a pretty good close call. Ah, once even got hit by one idiot who just didn't want to stop to the red lights, fucking idiots.

I can never understand why people would break that rule. Sometimes people are in a hurry and want to get somewhere as fast as possible, but I don't think it's anywhere near to worth it running the red lights. There's very few situations when I could understand and accept a little bit of breaking that rule, can't think of anything right now though..

I just hate cars sometimes Ironically I'm getting a driver's license in a month or so.

i live in miami... i'm used to it here

the main thing that happens a lot are the green arrows to turn left. in some intersections literally after like 8 seconds the green arrow turns red is when cars stop turning.

Posted by Frenchie on Nov-24-2007 18:09:

It is bad here.

I've noticed a longer yellow light lately or maybe it's just me. I think I ran one red light, ever, since I've been driving.

In the UK, a lot of lights have and have had for some time, Red Light Cameras, so if some twat jumps a red light, the camera grabs their number plate (license plate) and automaticly sends them a fine and puts points on their license (12 points and its a license suspension)

we have those. i got a ticket for it once, but it was totally undeserved. i was waiting in the intersection to turn [[i wasnt in a line, i was the only one]] and when it went yellow people started to stop so i could finally turn and BAM ticket.

Posted by noikeee on Nov-24-2007 22:23:

It's not a problem here.

Hardly ever ran a red light, only if it changes to red when i'm going through. But I immediately stop when I see a yellow light almost all the time.

The chance of running over people or hitting other cars is simply not worth the bunch of seconds you gain, except for very extreme situations.

In Rome....

all the time lol

you do not want to drive here very much

I had a motorbike accident a few weeks ago and I'm still having dental reconstruction.

yeah. There are also a couple of companies that sell certain materials that make the plate undecipherable from a certain angle (I believe Mythbusters determined many of these products are useless). A good number of people also are throwing up privacy flags (ie, the CC-TV "big brother"-esque system)
Certain cities in southern california have taken them down as a result, but they are numerous+growing where I live (san diego)

DC, Maryland & Virginia all have red-light cameras, but certain laws have been passed in different legislatures, so.. I'm not sure which jurisdications allow red-light cameras and which don't

I know for sure that Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington counties suspended red-light cameras because there's been people complaining and they want to

Yeah, I've seen the cameras but during rush hour they don't seem to do much good. Connecticut Ave. can take about an hour to move five miles because every other green light is blocked by stopped cars crossing the road.

I live in the District proper in part because I'm afraid of those $1000 speeding tickets in Arlington! Not that I've ever had a speeding ticket, but I just know that would be my first one.

Posted by Ian on Nov-25-2007 00:59:

i find it happens a lot of pedestrian crossings here. You've gotta wait for both sides to stop cos some old man or woman with arguing kids won't bother to stop. I like the id ea of keeping coins in my pocket, just small change, to launch at them along with 'wanker' when they go by.

it's not too bad in chicago

True. I'm not as concerned about the red-light cameras as I am about those incredible speeding tickets! But then again, I haven't driven into DC in awhile. I usually take the Metro.

blocking intersections is one of my pet hates.

A couple of days ago I was driving into work in peak hour, the traffic on the other side of the intersection was backed right up to the other side and I could see the next set of lights were red so they weren't going to move anytime soon. I had a green light. I sat at the line waiting for the other side to move so i didn't blok the intersection, and the dumb fucking twat behind me started honking me, after we finally got across the intersection he got alongisde me and was abusing me. For NOT blocking the intersection. Fuck me Adelaide is full of dickheads.

speed cameras are all over the UK, too...

and yeah, we have red light cams in texas.

Posted by Protege on Nov-25-2007 02:50:

Its quite common in SF, especially with left turns. The light will turn red then like 5 cars get the chance to go. Its pretty much expected when the light turns green to let the people turn before you go.

Also, I heard in some places like Puerto Rico, people arent required to stop late at night so as not to get car jacked.

DC has the wrost driving conditions in the universe. its impossible to navigate your way around even if your going in a straight line. sooner or later your bound to merge onto another street before you get where you're going. its no wonder people would ever run a red light if there too busy trying to figure out what fuckin street there on. Avoid driving in DC at all costs if you're smart.

That would be an incredibly long delay. Its probably more like 3. But I know what you mean.

Theres an intersection in my neighborhood that has a single light in the middle. When one side turns red, the other one goes green immediately. No need to say that when your light turns green, you definitely look both ways before entering the intersection.

no...I do mean about 10 on some of them that people always run. most of them aren't that long, but, just off the top of my head, I can think of 4 around here that are.
