Plot speculation
The sudden appearance of the untitled trailer for Cloverfield fueled media speculation over the film's plot. USA Today reported the possibilities of the film being based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, a live-action adaptation of Voltron, a new film about Godzilla, or a spin-off of the TV show Lost.[15] The Star Ledger also reported the possibility of the film being based on Lovecraft lore or Godzilla.[16] The Guardian also reported the possibility of a Lost spin-off,[17] while Time Out reported that the film was about an alien called The Parasite.[18] IGN also backed the possibility of the same premise, with The Parasite also being the working title for the film.[19] Chocolate Outrage was also a working title at one point during production.[9] In chats, Slusho and Colossus have been discussed as possible titles.[20] Entertainment Weekly also disputed reports that the film would be about a parasite or a colossal Asian robot such as Voltron.[11]
Visitors of Ain't It Cool News have pointed out 9/11 allusions based on the destruction in New York City such as the decapitated Statue of Liberty. The film has also drawn alternate reality game enthusiasts that have followed other viral marketing campaigns like those set up for the TV series Lost, the video game Halo 2, and the upcoming Batman film The Dark Knight. Members of the forums at argnet.com and unfiction.com have investigated the background of the film, with the "1-18-08" section at Unfiction generating over 7,700 posts in August 2007. The members have studied photographs on the film's official site, potentially related MySpace profiles, and the Comic-Con teaser poster for the film.[13]
furthermore it might be Cthulhu...

well the story goes (i don't know how they expect to unveil it in the film):
there is a company called Slusho that makes a popular soft drink in Japan. However, in the process of creating the drinks, there is a sizable amount of waste, which they decide to dump through a pipeline that goes off into the deep ocean. This waste causes a genetic mutation in a whale that causes the attack in the film.

"The Cloverfield Movie is based on the 1953 monster movie, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
The Beast arrives in New York where it manages to destroy most of Coney Island before finally being killed."

Not interested.
looks to me like another shitty big budget, fancy special effects michael bay "oooohh big godzilla - like monster guns blowing up stuff" movie
unless the "mystery" monster ends up being a gargantuan mutated penis...now that could have potential
Looks like a giant octopus to be honest. Since this is a water based creature, didn't it form by changes in environment and something to do with oil spills?
It's pretty obvious that it's motherfucking Cthulhu.

Ya that giant head octopus looking thing on Cthulu looks pretty similar to the gif.
