philosophy essay

I'm sitting here trying to write an essay due in about 18 hours, and I don't even bloody understand the source material I'm supposed to be writing about. That makes things difficult.

Any advice? I'm not really good at bullshitting when it comes to philosophy, since I'm a biology major.

btw I'm supposed to be writing about the Encheiridion by Epictetus. I'm supposed to basically explain it briefly, state an objection, and then either approve of or refute that objection.

Not really.

I'm a jack of all trades, master of none. I'm just totally not in paper writing mood right now, that's all.

Yes, I'm sure that's it.

How long have you had to "understand" the source material? A week? Two weeks?

Why then, a mere 18 hours from the submission time, do you not know the subject matter that you are supposed to write an essay on? Again: How long have you had to write this essay? A week? More?

To say you're "not in the mood" in fine, and I completely believe you. I've rarely met a student that was in the mood to write an essay. I never was.

Have you not bothered to familiarize yourself with the subject matter? Surely your classes would have been based around this topic in some way?

Epictetus was a Stoic. So try arguing that it's better to take the bad with the good than just spending your whole life trying to run away from pain (which is basically what Stoic philosophy is about).

I basically skipped class last week and didn't really look at the material until like 10 hours ago.

Well so far, I've said how he believes some things to be under our control (like our desires) and others not (like our possessions). He then says we should basically not desire things we don't control so that we never get unhappy.

I just can't put 2 and 2 together right now though. I've started the intro and such, but now that's I have to state what part of it I disagree with and why I think it sucks, I literally can't think straight. My mind is all over the place.

I really do think I have a mental disorder in this respect. I always confuse myself through overanalysis. Individually, my ideas are good, but I can't even remember them long enough to write about them cohesively for 5 minutes straight.

But yea, my thesis is literally that Epictetus's "way of living" is more not living at all, since you basically avoid all risk and all the potential benefits it has.

Well, there's no real reason to get pissy at me then. You skipped class, and didn't bother catching up until now

It's 4th year. I have 2 labs/week + thesis work to do + bullshit roommates to put up with 24/7. This elective is the last thing on my mind unfortunately.

You seem to be getting the idea, but keep in mind that many key terms involved in stoicism are words still used today, but their meaning has evolved. For instance, apathy in the ancient sense was to be objective, to have clear judgement, not lack of passion; similarly, stoic in the ancient sense told of avoiding emotional trouble through seeking clear judgement and mental clarity, not a lack of emotion.

"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them."
-Epictetus

Man I'm so fucked.

I just slept the past 1.5 hours on a couch in this building. I just woke up and not feeling anymore inspired than before.

Posted by nefardec on Nov-29-2007 12:22:

this is about the time for a very friendly and humble email or visit to the professor

maybe check yourself into the clinic for something and get some extra support for your cause

i was in a similar situation last week with paper for a contemporary art criticism class (even more bullshit than philosophy) and luckily i hadn't told my professor about a motorcycle accident and i was able to buy some time by dropping that

Posted by Turbonium on Nov-29-2007 16:36:

Well it's a 5% penalty/day (weekend = day). So if I were to hand it in on Monday, I would get 10% off.

My prof is really nice though and understanding, and I'm definitely on her good side (I've gone in for help before and stuff, and she seems to like my attitude in general... she told me I did better on the first essay than she expected etc.).

I dunno. I feel really cheap going into a clinic and coming up with some sort of "cause" for my lack of cognitive stability over the past 24 hours. It's especially funny since this is an ethics based philosophy course.

Maybe if I go with Epictetus's claim, I will just convince myself that I am not averse to a bad mark and I won't even care? lawl
