review: christopher lawrence, askew, laidback luke
got there at 11:30, no lines, yay
overall the main room seemed to fast for my tastes... and didn't really seem like other people were enjoying it a whole lot either other than those up by the booth going wild out when one of their favourite trance anthems were dropped... askew had some HUUUUGE ass buildups for it only being like 12:30am... and CL, again, just seemed too fast for the crowd to keep up with from what i noticed :S though i did like the chugging astrix style psy near the end of his set
the real party was in the gallery imo, laidback luke played SOOO many tracks that i have in my glitchy/weird/electro folder that i thought i'd be lucky to hear in a club... a lot of his own productions too, all that heavy stuff with the mega snares (but i missed housetrap if he played it
). at one point he played a bunch of old school hip-hop influenced stuff too, and it worked out great. one with a loop of a cypress hill song that i'm gonna be looking for... he was a cool guy as well and kept everyone hyped around the booth. overall i was impressed with him
dirty south apparently missed his gig for some reason, lol
d'oh
it was also the emptiest i've ever seen guv, which needless to say, was a nice relief... it was actually kind of chilly throughout the main room all night and there was room everywhere... guess the weather explains it, hope everyone got home ok
the main room also shut down at 6am, weird
jealous of people at cz now... even though there's the whole argument about only the locals that know how it's done properly there... playing the tracks that luke chose in his gallery set on friggin winamp in succession would be all i'd need for zone
on a side note i just watched little miss sunshine and it was amazing... also, i saw skillton in the gallery. remember that guy?
wow glad to hear you had fun!
yeah the weather was crap.. i would have liked to see laidback luke.. oh well.. he'll be back soon enuff... xo

maybe youll see dirty south partying at cz.. lmao
Ok time for a full review
Got in with my buddy around 11:15 to see about 4 people in total in guestlist and regular lines. To make things even better, $15 cover! WTF... I thought I was dreaming. MO was playing his usual sketchy house opening set which everyone in Toronto has heard. There was maybe 25 people at most at that time and until about 1:30, it didn't really pack up all that much. Lots of people who were just out to party... lots of out of towners etc.
On to the music
. Askew got on around 12:20 and gave everyone a nice dancing workout. Loads of stuff from Recoverworld but also many tracks I hadn't recognized. He did have his usual techy basslines but also had fantastic melodies that were pure hands in the air trance. It definetely got everyone dancing and he is a 'rockstar trance DJ' (AC/DC retro shirt and all
)... he loves interacting with the crowd and they gave that energy straight back to him! Great set, no complaints 8/10.
Around 2:15 CL came on and started off with some prog/electro/psy stuff that guys like Antix, Vibrasphere are producing. Was not really my thing, but he moved into his trade mark techy sound which really didn't do that much for me either, but the flow was atleast building somewhere. Around 3, he dropped J00F's remix of Cafe Del Mar and from then on, WOW....banging psy trance! Unbelievable stuff, I didn't realize CL would play so many crazy tracks with perfect guitar solo's and chanting background vocals on top of orgasmic basslines. This is just the sound I want to hear in the club; pumping, catchy and just progresses perfectly. I could only stay until about 4:15 due to the weather so I missed the ending of CL's set
. I would say about 8.5/10 because he took longer to build than Askew but IMO the 'peak' of the set was just unbelievable.
Overall I had an amazing night, I'd never expect the venue and general attitude of everyone I partied with to be this great. Bogdan, Sean+Ang's crew, Sonja +Jakub, Catalina, Ian (nice meeting you man, Invasionmix(sorry I forgot your name
) and anyone else who I missed out... was great partying with you all.
fa kin su pah !!!
i was thinking they would let Askew start around 1 and maybe CL around 3:30ish. Surprised they started out this early. Anywho good to see you had a great night Ben ... now i wanna hear from Nada & Catalina
I was tooo sick to come out

What a fucking awesome night.
Lots of room to dance, kickin tunes, SALTWATER and HOME! Fuckin wow.
Both sets were amazing.
The only thing that bugged me was the patio door being left open all night. Made guv fuckin COLD.
Driving home was hilarious though. Saw some idiot speed by, and a tow truck following him. He knew the idiot would fuck up somewhere on the DVP and need a tow, lol.
Also saw a cop stuck in a snow bank. AND one of those huge plows STUCK and trying to be dug out by a little plow.
Glad to see you all had fun. Was super annoyed at not being able to go...stayed in instead.
shitballs
sorry Ty i missed out
Well, thanks to the crazy weather my and my gf, plus two friends made it in around 2:00. Hey, at least there was no lineup. I wondered into the Gallery on and off, but it was pretty regular fare there (mind you "regular" is just great, great, great in the gallery) but I've been waiting for three years to see CL live. I am kind of on the fence on this one. It started off really slow, with some very nice buildups, but just a steady, unclean beat to follow through. And I don't know what happened maybe 15-20 minutes after he started, but he freaking trainwrecked one particular transition pretty damn badly. Basically the playing track stopped, and a new one started up. I dunno, guess he wanted to change up the downbeat. In any case, after about 3:00 it just got steadily better, and people were totally eating it up. It was even more pleasant with the fact that around that time people started to clear up, so there was plenty of room to dance. TOTA represent, I knew I would have a great time if I found the freaks up front and center, going nuts. It made the night, IMO. Nice to meet Bogdan (again) Catalina, and whomever else. I'm horrible with names, so my apologies.
Anyways, it was actually a pretty fun night.
