Mass Effect

One hour in and still haven't played enough to know whether I really like it or not - but the fact that you can't invert both axis on the camera stick is really taking some getting used to.

Great atmostphere, voice acting, and sound so far.

**sigh**

I should have done that too.

With weed, loud roomies, and neighbors throwing constant parties, the last thing I need is ANOTHER distraction.

i'm pretty tempted to buy an xbox just for this game hehe
although i think i will wait and save for a new pc and get it when it eventually comes out for pc

I'm about 5 hours in and it's a lot better now. The game has very limited tutorials on combat, so I had to figure out everything else on my own. Now it's a lot better and it's much more fun. The combat is decent and the voice acting is superb! The facial emotions really sell the story and it feels like I'm playing a SciFi action movie.

you might think hes joking but you also might notice a white van parked on the other side of the street.

Welp, Mass Effect has either broken my 360, or it simply doesn't work. Either way, I get a DRE within 5 minutes of any time I turn the game on right now.

Fucking clownshoes. For more on the DRE issue that it appears a lot of people are having, see: http://masseffect.bioware.com/forum...99784&forum=124

$60 coasters suck.

Posted by RJT on Dec-09-2007 23:16:

Alright - well, my 360 is officially toast. Going to pick up a new one tomorrow morning and see if that resolves it - thankfully Game Crazy's extended service contract allows me to trade only the system in and keep my HDD, so hopefully no savegame/achievement loss - we'll see.

All in all this has been a massive headache that seems to have been caused by faulty DVD drives in 1st gen 360's - needless to say, I'm less than thrilled.

shit. is it a problem just in 1st gens? cause im probably gonna be getting the game around christmas time, but i got my 360 off of ebay. good fuckin deal on it, but my warantee is mad short and therefore jexpired already

Posted by RJT on Dec-10-2007 02:38:

From what I've been reading it has to do either with which DVD drive you have in yours or which chipset - the thread I linked above has more links.

Posted by RJT on Dec-10-2007 14:41:

Also, Bioware's customer support is fucking awful - and their forums ban you for even attempting to use foul language. Case in point, I went to make a single post that used the word "fuck" one time, and I'm now permanently banned.

Fucking wank.

Posted by RJT on Dec-10-2007 21:35:

Picked up my new 360 this morning, Mass Effect seems to be running fine now - my DVD drive is a lot quieter (but still rather loud), but I'm not yet getting any of the horrid "OMG my console is scratching my media" sounds.

Wish me luck.

Alright so I've finished it, and if I had to sum this game up in two words they would be "Massive disappointment."

First, it's barely 10 hours long. Barely. And I did a good number of the side-quests and exploration quests.

Second, it sets the stage for an absolutely massive story - I mean I was absolutely drawn into the world they created (no matter how many times I also thought to myself how clear the influence of Star Wars was on teh games development), the story was enthralling - but the end of the game genuinely felt like I had scratched the surface. The final boss battle is incredibly dissatisfying the moment you realize "Oh shit, this is it?"

And you realize that well before the drawn out and obnoxious fight begins.

In short, Assassins Creed has more depth than this - and that's saying a lot.

I most likely would have rated this an 8 or a 9 had it been twice as long, but for it's relatively short gameplay coupled with an ending as bad as Assassin's Creed makes me want to give this one a 5 at best.

Maybe a 4. It was that disappointing (especially considering the hassle I had to go through just to play it).

40 of them are very, very bland and pointless.

I have yet to find a worthwhile side quest, and every planet you can explore is exactly the same - a bunch of mountains, a valley, some random piece of old equipment, and a base/bunker of some sort where you can kill all the enemies for free experience.

Seriously - this game oozes potential, and just fails to deliver.

Posted by Paul_Croshaw on Dec-15-2007 10:47:

Took me about 32 hours to complete and i managed to to get the achievement for 'majority of game completed'.Like you said it is very repetitive when you land on the planets.Just hope it improves in the next game.

Posted by Shamez214 on Jan-23-2008 23:50:

Got it for Christmas and started playing it last week. Just finished it (credits are rolling now). 10 hours? Took me roughly 25 hours. I didn't do most of the planet searching though. I thought it was an awesome game with an awesome story. I really don't get all the negativity, RJT.

Posted by RJT on Jan-24-2008 02:34:

It took me exactly 13 to beat the game, and that was with finishing some of the "extra" content.

I really don't think 10 hours of main quest and 40 hours of mindless, repetitive tasks on dull planets that are all almost exactly the same, and that culminate in reading encyclopedia length blurbs about the "universe", qualifies this game as more than a 6 at its best.

So what I really don't get is all the positivity.

Posted by Philby on Feb-15-2008 13:03:

just announced that mass effect will be coming to a PC near you in may w00t!
better textures and resolutions, improved interface and inventory, pc friendly controls. sounds good!

a big LOL to any hardcore xbox fanboys who thought it was gonna stay only on 360. pc version was inevitable!

Posted by RJT on Feb-15-2008 15:33:

Yeah, hardcore lols man - that's just the funniest thing evAR!

Fuck, the little things that entertain some folks...

Posted by Project-K on Feb-15-2008 18:03:

I'm still pissed at bioware spitting in the face of PC gamers by making this release console only, when the technology would have so easily permitted a multi-platform release. They have a thing or two to learn about the power of customer loyalty.

Posted by RJT on Feb-15-2008 18:05:

I agree, but with PC gaming on the steady decline and console gaming being where the cash is, it doesn't surprise me to see companies neglecting PC ports of properties that would make the transfer well.

Posted by Project-K on Feb-15-2008 18:16:

No it doesn't surprise me at all either. But I still think it's uber-lame. :/
