Behold, my arse. Predictive Text Grievances hahaha

Inspired by jon jon's little random post in the ON FIRE thread

What gets you with your predictive text on your mobile??

"ducking" for "fucking" is one of mine (annoying hahaha)

But when typing "if" and it defaults to "he" instead and I miss it... (that happens WAY to often with me! why do i always assume it spells out "if" when i should know that it NEVER does by default!! ... i lose)

Or wanting to spell out "home" but "good" always comes up first! that one gets me too.

I MUCH prefer the T9 predictive text (on Nokia phones for example) to the iTap predictive text (on Motorola phones for example). T9 is a great deal nicer/smoother IMO and just makes my txting life easier in general than I found iTap to. (yes, very important business! i know!)

But the one thing I liked about my iTap on my Moto phone was that it auto remembered which words you were using the most and always offered them first (T9 on my Nokia always offers the same word first, no matter how little I use it compared to the other words possible).

Also, with iTap, the words stayed in my phone's memory for FOREVER haha. I find if i dont use a word I've "spelled" into T9 for a week or a couple weeks (not sure exactly what the time frame is), then it disappears from the library of words T9 auto spells/recognizes for me! thats annoying.

Disclaimer:

1. If you have a (smart) phone or device with a full QWERTY keypad to make use of when text -- AWESOME! ^5. We dont care in here... this is for predictive text grievances on regular limited cellphone number pads

2. If you just manually spell out all your words with redundant button pushing w/o the aid or use of any form of predictive text -- AWESOME! ^5. Have fun with that. We dont care in here...

That ducking one has ducked up my texts on numerous occasions.

Get a Blackberry.

Oh no, wouldnt want to spend the $$$ on that. Dont need one. Certainly couldnt justify spending the money myself in order to make my 'texting' life easier, lol. No if i personally had another reason or true call to have one, then yeah, that'd be a nice side perk indeed . Though truthfuly, I dont mind predictive text at all. It gets the job done fine and well. And i like the very narrow width of standard cell phones. Perfect non-annoying size for a pocket stash.

This is merely a place for those who dont have or want one (for whatever reason), to air any the things about predictive text that are memorable or annoying to them.

Yeah, although I save some time with my Pearl, I still have predictive text and the one I hate the most is "ur" always ends up being "ie"!!!!

I also hate how my Pearl doesn't have the letters that correspond to each digit, like on all normal phones, so the numbers I have memorized by name, e.g. 1-888-ROGERS-1 don't work...but for that one I should just be dialing 611--duh!

Even with me programming in "u" and "ur" into my phone, im getting accostomed to just typing "you" and "your" or "youre" bc "u" is like three presses of the * key I think, and "ur" is like 4 or 5. Easier/less effort for me to just spell the word out in full.

Edit the predictive text settings then.

I added "ur" as a possible word, but the first option is always "ie"!!! Do you mean I can edit the settings so that whenever I type "ur", "ur" will be the first choice I get? If so, WOW this phone can be customized!!!

Posted by Silky Johnson on Dec-06-2007 21:19:

I only recently started using predictive text, and I guess my phone automatically logs everything I type...because there are certain "me specific" words that were already in my phone's memory. Made my transition to T9 texting really smooth.

Pretty sweet!

my sony phone was sooooo good for memorizing words. my motorola now doesn't remember shiv.

Turn on Auto-Text then add or delete the "ur" to be "your".

Then you will type U + R + space and it will auto-convert it to be "your". The key is to just space out of the "UR" (the space triggers the conversion).

so there is no way he can just set his phone so that it defaults to "ur" first instead of "ie" ?

(im sure Fufu still wants to make use of actual cellphone savvy lingo still )

ur teh kewlest fufu.

Edit:

Good solution though. You are still then getting your intentions across using a minimal amt of keystrokes. nice.

Sure. Set "ie" to equal "ur" in auto-text.

hah As they come to me I'll post them, but I have a handful that make me want to smash things...

oh!! nice. the progression of that logic escaped me. lol.

and since youre just setting your "auto-text" to turn "ie" into "ur" automatically,

you could still of course press a button and see "ie" listed with the other possible combos right, ?

Very handy indeed! I like.

even with my BB, my texts are still somewhat messed cuz I don't have the full keyboard on the 7100. So sometimes mine will read hey instead of get. I cannot think of any of the others right now. I think that is most common.

I used to get ducking when I was on my cell phone, but the BB doesn't have that problem anymore.

Once I get the new 8820, I won't have texts problems at all anymore

Can anyone confirm, I think Lisa told me at some point that until recently (in last few/several years???) that preditive text (be it T9, or iTap) COULDNT learn new words.

ie. you could never teach your phone to learn the word 'shit'.

Man, if this was the case before, i would NEVER use predictive text. It would be too annoying. I can especially see why ppl back then (whenever "then" was) would just spell out their words the old fashion way!
