New User, First Post, Wannabe Trance DJ

Hey all, first post here. I just found this site and had to join. You see, I, like many of you, am a trance addict. I'm physically and emotionally dependent. The doctors don't know what to do with me. They tried prescribing a strict playlist of Fallout Boy and Nickelback in the hopes that deluging my ears with overtly commercial and mundanely contrived music might lure me back into the throngs of pop-culture. Needless to say the treatment failed and I relapsed...hard. So, here I am. My name is Jevin, and I am a Trance Addict.

All jokes aside, I really only started listening to trance about three years ago, fully appreciating it for the past two (I'm 19, btw). I was first introduced to Infected Mushroom (some tracks off B.P. Empire) and, being the electro-virgin that I was, I can honestly say that I was caught entirely off guard, disoriented, and a little frightened. Over the past couple of years, though, my apprehension steadily evolved into the obsession it is today. Of course, experiences with various hallucinogenic drugs and just recently with ecstasy haven't exactly slowed this progression of interest. I don't simply listen anymore; I feel. Whether a well-produced song's vibe is warm and melty or distant and darkly alluring, I love it. The first time I heard Vicious Delicious by Infected Mushroom, I came three times in under 30 seconds! (alright, that was another small exaggeration, but you get the idea).

These are all feelings I'm sure the majority of you have and have had for much longer than I. I just needed to express the pure elation and sense of admiration that this great genre of music has aroused in me. But now that I've squeezed my emotional juices all over this thread, I'd like to ask a practical question about producing trance music: Where do I begin!?!?!

I'm 19 and entirely frustrated that I didn't start this venture earlier in life. I keep telling myself that it's not too late, but with very little, and I mean very, little background in music theory and application, I cant help but get discouraged. Honestly, is it too late for me to start learning? And if it isn't, what kind of equipment should I purchase? I already know of various software, but what about hardware? My price range altogether (at the moment, anyway) isnt higher than $1000.

Many thanks in advance for any comments and advice you guys might have to offer for me!

I you would like to spin psytrance and your budget is that low, go with a pair of used CDJ-100s. They seem popular among psytrance DJs for some reason

WOW YOU LIKED VICOUS DELICOUS?

I also fail to find the electro influenced tracks on b.p. empire... musta been I'm the the supervisor or converting vegetarians.

Seriously?

That album was about as good as this would fair in a classic art exhibition

If you liked the gathering check out dark psy
If you liked converting vegetarians your pretty screwed
If you liked I'm the supervisor then check out melodics full on...
if you liked B.P. Empire check out morning psy

RofLLLL. Geez, my apologies to those of you that were somehow offended by my choice of words; ecstasy tends to have that effect on my writing.

Thank you to Jeremy for being the only one who actually had something constructive to say.

And to the rest of you: I'm not sayin' that I didn't deserve to get flamed for my choice of words, that's all good'n fun, but give me a break as far as technical knowledge goes (this just in...I'm new). I took a better look around the forums and apparently I misjudged the majority of you. See, I was under the impression that a lot of you guys listen to music because of how it makes you feel, not because liking or disliking a particular genre of music is fashionable at the time...Hahahaha! What was I thinking!? Who ever thought of making your own opinions LoL! "Infected Mushroom is so mainstream now.
I just cant appreciate the fact that theyre insanely talented and their music sounds good because Im too worried about how popular they've become!" (btw, for those of you who dont seem too good on recognizing subtleties when they read them...that was sarcasm).

(btw, I meant Vicious Delicious the song, not the entire album. That song specifically because it has one of the best rising sounds and highest peaks that I've ever heard in a song. I didn't ask for anyone's opinion on their musical preferences, I was only stating some of my own. Now that we're on the topic, though, can anyone give me the name of a song whose build-up and eventual climax is even better than Vicious Delicious? I'm not trying to prove a point, I just really want to hear more songs that sound like that).

Most of the time that is what your going to get anyway. Your lucky you haven't encountered the house fanbois... they are MUCH WORSE.

Ok anyway on topic of climaxes:
People can fly-Astral Projection (most defenitly biggest climax ever)
Deep space 5d-Dimension 5
Goaway-Power source
Psycho-Infected mushroom
Virtual Voyage-Infected mushroom
September-Penta (kind of)
Spiritual healing-The Muses rapt (Juan, Domi and DJ Jorg remix)
Space Pussy-Hallucinogen
Angelic Particles
Alpha Centauri-Hallucinogen (I've heard this... although personally I'm not a big hallucinogen fan except for a few rare songs like the above excluding alpha centauri)

Also @ the "infected mushroom didn't sell out they are just too talented"... well no hun the story actually is that they wanted to become more popular and weren't happy with their allready huge popularity in the psy scene. If thats not selling out I dunno what is.

Posted by josh rising on Dec-12-2007 21:36:

what springfield do you live in? illinois? missouri? massachusetts?

if you're intent on DJing, please don't be generic. there's already enough generic DJ's out there to last twenty lifetimes. if you're gonna spin, make sure there's something about your sets that make them unique & interesting. otherwise, it'd just be contributing to the mass void of DJ's with an actual point of view.

you seem like you understand that, so hopefully. good luck to you.

Thanks for the list, Darkarbiter. I'll definitely check'em all out. I understand what you mean about Infected Mushroom selling out, I was just saying that I've never really been one to let an artist's selling-out have any bearing on whether or not I like the music they make.

And thanks for the encouragement, Josh. I live in Mass.

I don't care whether they sell out either... doesn't stop the album from sucking though.

Anyway if you are/are going to be a DJ its a good idea to check out other DJ sets. They can give you ideas... and teach you about how a set is made. Whether you learn from someone elses mistakes, be inspired by a set or simply copy something it's never a bad idea to check out others sets. Certainly learnt some things (and am still learning) from doing that. I've listened to a set which has caused all of the things mentioned above for me.

I've been reading these forums for quite awhile now and I've concluded that, on average, you'll find about 10% of the posts to be helpful, or relevant to the original post.

The other 90% will be extremely derogatory and full of pessimism. I generally ignore these posts.

Although it's unfortunate that the majority of posters tend to jump on that giant TA asshole bandwagon, you'll find that the helpful members do have a lot to offer in terms of offering you suggestions on music that you might enjoy listening to, mixing techniques, etc. etc.

As far as your question concerning djing-
I only recently purchased my setup and have been very satisfied with it. Once I decided that I wanted to learn I just started to research and ask around what would be the best way to get started. I ended up finding two CDJ-1000 MK3's and a DJM-600 that I got hooked up to my speakers. After messing around with burning cd after cd, I decided to go ahead and give Serato a try, and have been very happy with that decision. I don't have a significant amount of time to put towards mixing, though, and would probably be just as happy with a pair of CDJ-100's for a lot less $.

With your budget, I'd recommend a pair of CDJ-100s and a used mixer of some sort. Then all you'll need is a speaker system to hook it up to. However, if you plan on spending a lot of time mixing, you might consider saving up a bit more money so you won't want to upgrade a couple months down the road.

Just some considerations..

oh, nice. so do i lol. fortunately not in springfield though (no offense lol, i'm sure you know what i mean).

get a numark mixer. they're cheap and basic but they do all you'll need to do in the beginning. i agree with sukhoi about the CDJ's, can't really go wrong with those. the decks are the most important part, a mixer at the start can be VERY basic just while you learn exactly what it does, so that's why i suggest a numark. they're cheap but reliable, and they'll get you where you need to go for a good start. for headphones, i would suggest technics, but that doesn't matter as much either.

and i like infected mushroom, "look at me" is my favorite of theirs. it's almost as good as the track of the same name by geri halliwell! okay, i'll stop now with that.

If you're looking to be a trance DJ and have an inclining towards psy, check out some sets from Christopher Lawrence and John '00' Flemming, as they tend to be regarded as some of the best DJs of this sound around. Be a good starting point to learn some techniques.

Listen man, watch what you say about where I live. It's a gorgeous area with only a few barely noticeable problems. Once you get past all of the shootings, stabbings, rapings, burglaries, kidnappings, crackdealers, crackheads, methlabs, bloods, crips, dead animals/people, and used needles lying around everywhere, you can really start to appreciate just how wonderful springfield is.

Everyone seems to think CDJ's are the way I should go for mixing. If I were interested in making music as well what kind of equipment would I need?

Also, do any of you DJ part-time or full-time anywhere? If so, how long did it take you to get your foot in the door and how did you go about doing it?

Thanks again, this is all really helpful for me.

+1 to J00F... very good and honest myspace blogs.

If your interested in making music all you need is a computer and a arrangement (probably not correct term) program like:
Ableton-
Reason-I've been looking into maybe trying out producing... and from either this or FL this seems a lot more powerful and a lot easier to use... FL is more for hip hop and stuff that doesn't use synths imo. Note that reason doesn't accept vsts and the main reason I love it is everything is done by the main people so it all fits together.
FL studio-Very simple to use but if you want to do anything advanced (including synths) you have to use vsts
Cubase-One of the most advanced ones... apart from that I don't know much about it except you can use vsts with it
Acid-

Ofcourse theres the option of buying equipment as well... but thats way more expensive although in the end probably preferable.

at first i thought you were serious lol. then again, i've only seen springfield from I-91, the mass pike, and a few other assorted times i've actually been in the direct area. i know there are some nice parts, they just get overshadowed.

for producing, yeah, do what darkarbiter suggested, i'd personally back FL studio. once you get the hang of it (which is easy to do in itself), the options truly open up from there. i've produced every track i've ever made with FL alone, i've never used anything else. but that's just me, and i don't produce goa or even anything remotely relevant to current EDM.
