Theory why female djs and producers are so horrible...

After so many years why are 99% of the female Djs and producers in EDM so awful? They've had more than enough time to make their mark in this genre of music.

I have a theory about this and I think it especially applies to EDM production since that requires more skill than Djing.

Lets be honest here...there ARE cognitive differences between the sexes especially when it comes to the math and sciences. Why do you think so few women go into computer science or mathematics? Just look at the dearth of women in the computer science, mathematics, and engineering departments at most any univeristy

Even the president of Harvard acknowledged this when he said there are innate differences between men and women...and this might be one reason fewer women succeed in science and math careers.

This clearly ties into EDM production where great deal of technical/computer skill is required in addition to musical skill.

because it's easier not to?

I don't think it really matters, no need to hate them

Your argument kinda contradicts itself. If women are supposedly worse at math and science, wouldn't it be logical to assume they excel in the arts, social sciences, and communication, and by association, music? If you think EDM is the only genre of music that involves math and technology, you've got a lot of reading to do.

On the other hand, everyone knows beethoven, dvorjac, bach, etc, but how many renowned female composers are there? The deficit of women in music isn't only limited to EDM - britney, jlo, and Madonna notwithstanding.

I can think of plenty who are far from horrible.

Daniela Stickroth, Kate Simko, Ellen Allien, the girl from Sleeper Theif, Scarlett Ettiene, Magda...the list goes on.

I think your assumptions are pretty baseless, blanket stereotypes of "cognitive differences" and that kind of male superiority complex are lame.

The "cognitive differences" are rendered moot when you think about the differences between simple individuals regardless of gender.

Anyways, I am a little surprised you've posted something with actual substance for once rather than the useless trolling one-liners we're all used to...

This is the worst thread I've ever seen.

I think pop music isn't a very good thing to survey.

There are tons of females who are only popular because they are hot. Also I'm pretty sure females more often like female artists and quite a bit of pop music is actually written by the female singer.

Also Madonna is a terrible example... she hardly writes any of her own stuff. Britney only writes some... and jlo... who gives a shit?

your "theory" is dumb as shit, no offense. most of my favorite producers and DJ's are actually females.

I'd venture a guess that it may have something to do with global oppression of women and a predominant male superiority complex during that time.

I could be wrong.

And this is an awful theory, but at least this isn't a Sasha/Schossow/Svd or whomever thread.

There isn't much music created by women that is actually worth listening to.

Posted by Paradox Lost on Dec-13-2007 03:08:

Even if you are correct in arguing that there is a difference in technical capability between men and women, and that women relatively lack in that regard, it doesn't thereby mean that the technical skill involved in DJ and production is by consequence out of reach.

...so I don't know where you're deriving that idea that the necessary technical skills lie on the 'generally unattainable side' for women.

great theory, except for the cognitive differences you speak of state that men are more visual and women are more auditory.

not all female dj/producer's are bad. Sophie sugar, kristina sky and suzy solar are very good imo.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

It is true that a woman has a smaller brain than a man?

Posted by Darkarbiter on Dec-13-2007 03:39:

I love some of Joan of Arcs earlier works... only classical worth listening to IMO. Pretty sure she's a woman.

As far as early techno goes Mary Wollstonecraft was also way ahead of her time.

Woa brah, chill with the sexism. I can think of plenty of fantastic female DJs and producers (some of which are TAs), why are you hating on that shit?

*runs in anticipation of flame war*

Posted by Jono404 on Dec-13-2007 03:46:

There's plenty of female DJs in hard dance, Kym Ayres, anne savage, lashes, pinup, amber d etc, theres a big devoid of them in say, prog house though.

I think generally, and this is just a generalisation, while girls do like dance music they tend to be less 'geeky' about it if you will. They'll like a track, and dance to it in a club etc but will they ID it and hunt down the white label like a lot of guys would? Probably not.

sister bliss is still the best female producer/dj out there

Ellen Allien's album last year and her Fabric mix this year prove this thread wrong

One should choose their words very carefully when criticizing a sex as being inferior in a certain field. The fact that the president of Harvard, quite possibly a geriatric blue blood who belongs to the good ol boys club, older then dirt, and from an era that espoused these believes openly in public is not the best source for biological differences between the male and female mind physiologically.

That aside, when SMC said not a lot of good music is produced by women, did you mean in the EDM realm or in general.

Generally speaking, you might simply prefer male vocals to female and therefor not like female produced music, which in case makes your opinion skewed anyway. If you simply dont think Lisa Gerrard, Sarah McLachlan, Feist, Portishead, Sarah Brightman, and others make quality music, then either you have an odd definition of good music or are sexist, or both.

In the EDM realm, others have already mentioned many talented female producers and djs, I would simply like to add K-Swing to that list of female DJs who can really put it down. Also check out a song she produced w/ Beber for a quality breaks track.

Finally, maybe the reason fewer women are in certain fields like mathematics, EDM, is due to a male bias against women that not only keeps aspiring ones from entering the business, but puts the kybosh on any interest some may have. Without a reasonable hope of being able to pursue an interest, not a lot of people tend to develop one anyway. And its kind of impossible to know about all the female bedroom djs out there.

If you are going to use a public forum for expressing biased points of views at least do so, though it may be lengthy and thought inducing, with reasonable arguments and facts to support your point of view so others can discuss with you on a semi-objective level, rather than resorting to I feel this and think that.
