Question Winterizing your house?

Anyone have any good tips? I'm currently in the middle of putting the plastic film up over all the windows, and I got a nail in gasket for our back door - but does anyone have any tips for other ways to save energy/conserve heat?

Or, even better, any advice for me as I begin putting up this plastic film stuff? Tips for how to best get it to work/go easily?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

you won't need to heat your house as much.

if you got the kind of window-film that requires a hairdryer to seal it up, my hairdryer is in the top part of my closet where my jeans are. you probably already know that though.

have fun. and thanks for taking care of that today!

Yeah, I need to put that shit up on my windows too. And my fuckin front door is drafty as hell.

Buuuuuut that's all stuff my landlord will do for me.

Oh dude - no problem. I feel totally rejuvenated now that finals are over!

The only thing that sucks is apparently the kind I got you need to let the tape set up for 15 to 20 minutes before you apply the film, but I don't want to try more than one window at a time - so I'm kind of just waiting right now to see if I can do one pretty easily, then I'll just go around the house and do all the taping, sit down, smoke a bowl, then go back and do all the film.

Only thing that sucks is the shovel selection was pants and they had no salt

That salt is fucking taxed - I wanted to get a huge bag of it so I only had to buy it once this winter.

If you're looking for cheap improvements...
1) check your doors - make sure the draft stops at the bottom of each is properly set so that it forms a seel with the door jamb, if it doesn't you can probably adjust it using only a screw driver. If you cannot then go get new ones.
2) foam tape is your friend... line your door jambs with foam tape to act as a gasket on all exterior doors. if you have drafts from your windows this can help on window frames too.
3) spray foam insulation - shoot some of this shit in any cracks you have in your walls or window frames.
4) change your furnace filter.
5) get a programable digital thermostat, set it to lower temps for times when no one is home or when sleeping.
6) clean your ducts - greater efficiency in heating.

i've thought about installing one of those for a while now but i'm afraid the install might be tricky since we're in an older house. i did it once before but it was right after we had remodeled our upstairs back home so everything was brand new.

Move Furniture Away From Vents, Registers, and Radiators

This sounds like a no-brainer, but many times a red couch with lots of cat toys underneath it, chair, or bed moved during the summer stays there in winter, blocking the flow of heat into the room. This wastes money and leads to cold rooms. With a forced-air system, blocking a supply or return vent can cause a house-wide pressure imbalance that disrupts the heat flow in the whole system.

damnit

Go sweater shopping!

Cook large meals that require ovens, stoves and general all out kitchen warming.

Make like a Magda and make some fucking tea!

Note that I live in Los Angeles and have no fucking clue what I'm talking about.
