how can you tell when you need new styli?

well i ask this because i slammed BOTH (yes im an official dumbass) ortofon cartridges against my platter argh i cant tell any differance sound wise but i dunno it seemed pretty rough that needle hitting the rubber bit on the platter :/ are they ruined forever :P?

Well, if there's no audible defeciencies in the sound, then they should last for quite a while still.

you could have sharpened the stylus which could potentially slice right thru your entire vinyl collection

Hey, cool it man, liquid's just kiddin with ya!

Your Ortofons will be fine, I've done the exact same thing a few times. No problem. If you push the needle up on your Ortofons, you'll notice that it kind of goes and hides up in its hole. The needle is protected for these eventualities!

They'll be fine for a while longer, trust me.
