Movies plus religion = bad

So every year, my cousins and I go out to see a movie after our family reunion. Bear in mind, my family is crazy religious. This is an excerpt from a rant about "The Golden Compass" on my cousins facebook:


The moive based on the book premiers this month. Both the book and movie introduce atheism to children. The story ends with Adam and Eve killing God. Written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist. Pullmans main objective is to bash Christianity and promate atheism. Pullman said in a interview in 2003 " my books are about killing God" also stated the he wants "to kill God in the minds of children"

please boycott the movie and books. As Christians God gave us the responsibility to raise our children in the way they should go we are their spiritual eyes.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
(Ephesians 4:2-3)

Anyway, this is what a group of us want to see, and this is obviously being shunned by the other half of the group.

Does anyone have suggestions on

1. what movie to see that wont piss off/offend anyone/that wont suck
2. how to avoid the religious argument that is sure to spark from this
3. keep us all together and merry on christmas

P.S. I am not saying that this is causing an issue, I am just being cautious and planning a way to avoid it becoming an issue. I personally could care less what movie we see.

The best movie about religion I've ever seen is Carl Theodor Dreyer's Ordet (The Word).
If you want to avoid the topic I recommend The Straight Story by David Lynch. I imagine that would be the perfect movie for christmas.

i saw "i am legend" and was so irritated at the ending like why theresa's cousin is mad at the golden compass... except because it turned out to be very evangelical in nature.

i haven't seen it yet, but from everything i've heard, they removed a SHITLOAD of the anti-religious messages from the movie, to the point where a bunch of fans of the original books that i know are pissed because the movie pretty much misses the point

I absolutely loved the books when I read them when I was in middle school.

The Exorcist!

I had no interrest in this movie until I heard that the church is banning it and christians all over the world are deeply offended by it. Now I really, really want to see it (even if it sucks).

LOL! They are still trying to "get over" the last time someone did that in my family. Poor guy. I got him "The God Delusion" for Christmas

I'm not atheist, I am agnostic. Even still though, my family would have a fit. They are already guessing that I am not a follower which results in enough religious crud being rammed down my throat now... imagine if I told them I was the black sheep.

the books make several referances to killing god
there's nothing remotely religious in this film. New Line pussied out big time.

That's what I was thinking. I was tempted to ask my cousin.. "Why can't you see it? Are you afraid it might encourage you to question what you believe? Are your beliefs so fragile that a movie could shatter them?"

Meh. They don't celebrate Halloween, they refuse to let anyone in our family believe in Santa Claus... they are just... extreme.

Sometimes I think to myself "ahh, they're not that bad", but then they freak out over a "secular" movie, and I'm back to the drawing board.

id divorce your relatives. i mean seriously, what a load of shit. can they only watch films that subscribe to their narrow belief system?

tell them they're a bunch of ignorant fucktards that give "narrow minded" a completely new definition.
