im sick of the idea that any one person is responsible for another's actions just because they are from the same country...

wtf what have I done? i go on foreign aid trips, i donate my time and money, and i stay on top of current events...

how about this... i'll take responsibility for MY actions, and you take responsibility for yours.

Such an individualistic way of thinking.

Posted by Ian on Dec-27-2007 22:49:

is this in total amounts, bearing in mind the population of the US is much bigger than many other nations.

Posted by d-miurge on Dec-27-2007 22:56:

The United States is the world's largest contributor in absolute terms but the smallest among developed countries as a percentage of its GDP.

oh noes, we are not worthy

I like to think of it as one of the perks of citizenship.

I think the real problem is other countries have resource envy.

Your vesphene geysers are depleted, nigs.

Posted by d-miurge on Dec-28-2007 00:10:

Oh and you know which country is the second contributor (in absolute terms)? Saudi Arabia.

Did you even read the article?
quote:
Index of Global Philanthropy combines all aid from developed countries government and private an approach that its authors say is a more accurate measure of a nations generosity. According to the index, the United States is the top donor in absolute amounts and the seventh of 22 in terms of GNI percentage.

Also, the U.S. is by far the largest giver of private aid (as a proportion of GNI, not just in absolute terms), which is the only real measure of generosity on the individual level. Please, tell me how Europeans are sooooo generous because their leaders force lots of aid money out of them through taxes.

Read my second post, hater.

there was an article on msnbc or cnn, i forget which, but it said that the US people give more to private charities than the fed gov't gives to its people.

ie, the people are generous, the gov't is not.

mainly, i think, because feel feel that the private industries/charities have more results with them (i.e. red cross, etc...). where as everyone still has a bad stigma of "FEMA" in their eyes.

^^ The government does a lot of work in countries of interest. i know usaid works wonders in some countries and not much in others.
