For Those That Party In D.C. Your Thoughts On The 2008 Club Scene(Fur vs Glow)

ok folks get ready for A LONG read! but these are my feeling so what are you gonna do...btw i broke it up so its easier to read...

it originally started in this thread:

agreed.i can remember a thread on the glow boards about trying to bring in the "lesser known dj's"

(after some searching the glow boards i found it,here it is)

http://www.groovanauts.com/board/sh...=richard+durand

and at least 5 of the dj's named in that thread have been at fur in the last 3 months.now granted it hasnt been that packed there and thats glows reasoning for not bringing in these dj's,however, the (house)talent they have been bringing in has not generated a lot of buzz and tickets either.

and speaking of buzz, now that THAT parties back in town im sure it will help to influence people to come out to furs trance parties not to mention put a dent in glows house parties as buzz is the originater of house events in this area.securing deadmau5 is a huuge deal as he is hot right now.

i think one of furs problems right now is lack of promotion.i dont see any of the above names in this thread on thier website and flier distibution and advance ticket promotion has been weak at best.to quote the glowcrews quote:

"Ultimately, nightclubs are in business to make money".

having said that you have get the word out to the OLD AND CURRENT glow patrons what dj's are coming to your club.the dj's that they have brought in the last 3 months would have sold better at glow simply based on glows name status in the club scene here alone.

and name status at fur is ultimately there biggest problem: FUR HAS TO CONVINCE PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE NOT THE OLD FUR THAT RAN GLOW WITH AN IRON FIST DURING GLOWS TENURE AT THAT VENUE!

having buzzlife at the venue is a giant step towards this, as anyone whos been to a buzz event when nations was around knows they were famous for their loose restrictions on clothing, glowsticks and had a great "come as you are"policy. so combining that with word of mouth about having a more relaxed vibe will really bring people who might be dusgruntled with fur because of past events back into the club.if i was fur I would go as far as printing it on their fliers and website that they are more easy going now.

i know this seems like a giant promotion for fur or something but trust me its just what i think should be done(i definetly had my problems at fur and stopped going more and more after they started confiscating local dj's cd's at the door).however i do think fur has the upper hand in 2008 providing they continue to bring in the talent that they have and it seems like they are.

on glows end they have the club name status already so all they have to do is keep more of an open mind towards the dj's they bring in,avoid becoming stale, and look at the younger up and coming djs more as these djs eventually become the future stars of this industry.in the end i will support both clubs.but the bottom line is ill give my money to the club that brings in the best lineup.

i encourage both fur and glow promoters and staff to comment in this thread including the patrons of both venues.

My thought is that there's more to the scene than Fur and Ibiza
smaller parties is where it's at
Pulse is growing every month
We are slowly building a techno scene
More techno in '08
viva la revolution!

BeBar
Third Saturday of each month

This month I'm opening, and headlining is my friend who has a release out soon on Drumcode
But it looks like you'll be seeing John O'Bir instead...

not to be confused with "Pulse Zero" which is a re-inception of a house music party and held at 1223 twice a month.

i agree and doing the things your doing also helps the scene a lot!ill definetly show up at one of your gigs!

but im curios to see what people think of fur now that glow is not there and what they think of glow now that its over at ibiza.im actually not blown away with the layout of the new glow but that might change the more i go there.

I've still not been to Ibiza, so I can't offer any real comments on it.

As for FUR...well for me, buzz at FUR is just plain weird still. It just doesn't feel right. Perhaps in time if they are able to make it more like the buzz of yore and a good regular crowd builds up. For now it still just feels like FUR to me. The main room is never packed, and there is still hip hop in the front and as such, the rowdy crowd that comes along with it. Buzz is bringing in some good acts, but they really need to re-focus on how they are promoting or something, because they simply aren't drawing the crowd they should be.

I haven't been to the trance nights at FUR on saturdays, so I don't know if the same rings true for them. I probably wont ever go because to put it simply, I just don't like trance anymore.

Smiley DJ

This is an interesting discussion. Some good points have been touched on.
I'd like to think that it is not so much Glow versus Global but more of the different direction each party decided on. Glow is doing more the house/electro sound and Global @ Fur is concentrating mainly on Progressive/Trance and the occasional house night. Each party has a different idea of where the music scene is headed. Luckily for both parties there are enough people with different taste. We know there were some growing pains with promotions earlier on and some promoters and were changed. The promotions vehicle is now turning its wheels and the word is getting out There are some tweaks but these kinks are being worked out.
The DC crowd in general has so much to choose from between both clubs not to mention many other lounges and such. However, since this is tranceaddict for Trance there is basically one choice in DC and that is FUR This is why we decided to go the progressive and trance route. No other club was doing it, and we are confident that the demand is there.
The goal is to be consistent in quality every week, whether it be a local or big name headliner. We plan to show DC that good quality music can be Trance. The last two shows Cosmic Gate and Matt Darey/Jan Johnston were packed!!! So this is a good sign

I have been to both clubs and all I can say is that Glow @ Ibiza has the upper hand since its way bigger and more room to walk around and its easy to get around. Also the sound system is so much better at Ibiza.

What hurts FUR is that nothing changed and what its seems to be is that Glow has much more room. I went to Ibiza for Dirty South and I was shocked how many people where in the main room. What even better the women ratio was much higher. OH THE BIGGEST THING IS THE LAZERS @ IBIZA WERE F*CKIN INCREDIBLE.

I have yet to checkout a Buzzlife nite and I will do so since Roger Sanchez & Ladiback Luke will be there later on this month. Fur needs so rebuild and destroy cause I am sick of that stupid vip layout.

A bit harsh on Fur Not sure if I agree with your perspective on the Fur sound system It is one of the best in the city!! The lighting system is perfect!!
Well since Fur brought two of your favorite DJ's on your profile Blank & Jones, & Andy Moor maybe once we bring Marco V you will give Fur some better feedback

Posted by AddictedTo1982 on Jan-04-2008 16:41:

Before Glow made the move I had so many bad times because it always overcrowd and the worst of the worst people. FUR's much better now since its less people so it keeps the night more intimate. Sound system is great until they turn it up load and I am not the only who's experienced this to.

I remember Buzzlife saying they were gonna make improvements on the layout wonder what happen with that

Posted by tknoxtc on Jan-04-2008 21:17:

Glow and Buzz are institutions in DC. They have their own followings. The concern is with Global. There's a reason Glow has diversified with the genres.

Although, I love trance and will show up for most of Global events, I'm doubful that an all trance party will attract consistent flow of clubbers.

That aside, Global needs to promote their asses off. I meet friends here and there and tell them about the DJs Global is bringing in and most of the time they have no idea.

Fur is an awesome club. With its sound system fixed, it may even be better club than Ibiza. But it lacks the identity as a club. Buzz only brings in its own crowd. Global hasn't established itself yet. People have no idea what to expect. I'm sure it will come to itself with time, but for how long and how committed is Michael Romeo?

Posted by shaminii on Jan-04-2008 23:04:

Glow has always been great, but I always feel that they only bring in certain dj's to generate money rather than for the love of music. IE: Tiesto in Concert. Buzz, IMO is all about music. I always have fun at Buzz events. In terms of clubs, I don't' like either Ibiza or Fur. I hate how the DJ booth is so high. It kinda breaks that intimate connection between the dj and the crowd. So in Ibiza and Fur, it always feels like the dj has this weird god status.

Posted by element714 on Jan-04-2008 23:05:

fur will begin their remodeling prob in the spring, now that they have finished bulding tattoo. As for global its getting its own crowd
dont sleep on them.

Posted by DCgirly on Jan-05-2008 03:24:

I think Fur should change their name.

Posted by DCgirly on Jan-05-2008 03:25:

The Global party at Fur has been steadily growing since BT & Grafitti came on Dec 8. The Cosmic Gate and Matt Darey nights were a nice size as well. All they need is more promotions and the people will come.

Posted by KAZEUS on Jan-05-2008 03:36:

i heard about this fur changing. they should remodel asap. so many wasted space throughout the mainfloor. put the dj booth facing the majority of the floor so where the current big bar is there should be a booth there and get rid of staircase to the side and open up the floor as large as possible. dont even think about with vip sections and crap on the floor. i hate that layout at ibiza. wasted space. what is this miami clubs?? keep the upstairs go all the way around the main floor so what we have is a giant floor with views from top also. keep it large and spacious. put the vips or whatever upstairs. i remember talking to Leama, he was like i hate playing some of there clubs where there's barely any floor to dance (i.e. miami) and he loves to play in europe and asia because ppl and club there are more energetic and the venue is meant to dance all night and he has much better time watching the crowd and working on his sound. that's what i'm talking about. it's that simple. and make a statement that it's about the music not for vip or posers. dc has tons of trance crwod and potentials, they just hate on trance and go to house clubs but then again trance djs never came here other than the top 3s. since trance djs start to come and words get out, they are getting popular. yes it was slow as hell and almost NO advertisement for past 4 months but it's building up, there's a solid market for this and fur doesn't jump on it. like someobody said how is furs mgt commited to this? seemed like they dont care or carried away doing other things, being one of the biggest in the area if i was a manager i'd turn it into a mega club for trance and edm shows. too bad its so slow, when will they realize? anyway, i hope they make changes, hate the layout. i donno who caem up with it, they must have liked to waste space. such a weird layout, doesn't make sense. sound does get shitty when it's over loud, but other than that it sounds better than b4.

Posted by Greedy on Jan-10-2008 00:19:

The glow/panorama argument as to what kind of DJs they should book will never end. Panorama tried very hard to keep trance and progressive alive but eventually had to start looking at house and electro talent. It was apparent when they would book old trance talent but the nights were basically dead. Not from lack of promotion, but I feel because the only people that could really appreciate that kind of talent are the old schoolers and the people that knew who they were seeing. Add to that the fact that trance isn't as popular as it once was, it was bound to end. Now, people complain that they book too much electro and house and need more trance.

It never ends.

As far as the Ibiza vs Fur debate, this is a tricky comparison because one venue has been around for several years over the other. I don't know anything about Fur's financial but I'm gonna say that when it first opened several years ago, it wanted to cater to a crowd that would get it's investors out of the red and into profit. All new establishments are like that. Since Fur appears to be doing alright, I wasn't surprised that they were willing to take in Buzz. I was however, surprised that Buzz selected Fur as their venue. Goin back to Ibiza, I expect it to be just like how Fur was when it first started and fortunately for Ibiza, they learned from Fur's mistakes and from my personal opinion, it's run much better than Fur.

Someone mentioned Ibiza's Miami style VIP layout. That's just plain ol' maximizing profit. They make more money per square foot selling "sitting" space and bottle "service" compared to craming 3-4 clubbers in that same amount of real estate charging them $20 each. That's just business, the investors just wanna make a return on their investment so unless you're willing to pay them $500 to get rid of that table for more dancing space, those VIP sections will remain there.

If you like big clubs (I do), then both clubs are fine. Maybe neither is the best in the world, but not many are. As far as the "competition", I am a firm believer in not getting worried about who gets what slice of the pie, just bake more. I think having those 2 nights a block apart can only create more demand. That said I'll be at Fur this Saturday, "competing" against my friend Markus, lol. I'll swing down there for a few while Majai is spinning, too. I would never suggest anyone come see me instead of Markus, but maybe some of you guys will stop into Fur early for a drink or two.

Respect-

noel

Noel! I'd love to see you! When are you spinning? I've never been down to DC. I was planning on maybe making it down there for Markus, but I'd love to see you too, Noel. If I'm reading this all right, the clubs are close to eachother? I'd love to try to make it to both. Let me know, because I'm basically clueless right now. I know nothing about the scene down there. I'm usually in NYC.

Both clubs are 2-3 minute walking distance from each other. You could actually come to Fur and catch the noel set and then if must leave and miss majai's storming trance set you could go venture down the street.

Yea it should be nice! Strangely enough, I've never been in my entire life. I live in Philly. I've been to Cali, to Florida, all over, yet never DC. Never took the class trip there, I was always in the class that went to the baltimore aquarium lol.
