Genetic Engineering of Humans

this was spawned by eric's thread about over population. some people started to slowly venture into the thought of that without implicitly saying it. anyone ever seen that movie GATTACA? it specifically revolves around this and how being a "natural" will either limit or totally eliminate your ability to be anything worth while.

so what are your thoughts on it?

It's going to happen. Even if it gets banned in a few countries, some of the ones with fewer ethical qualms will end up doing it, and then everybody else will have to follow suit if they want to keep up.

The very rich will do it first (since they'll be the only ones able to afford it), which means that in addition to the environmental advantages of better education and childhood nutrition, they'll have inherent genetic superiority on their side as well. Which is fine, I guess, as long as you aren't the sort of person concerned about vast and growing inequalities...

I agree, genetic engineering of humans will happen, it's pretty much unavoidable. I'm not sure why so many people are so afraid of it. We genetically engineered corn and it made it possible to grow in places that were formerlly barren, same with potatoes, hell what we call carrots are actually a genetically engineered version of carrots (since real carrots are difficult to digest for people). My guess is that the engineering will weed out weaknesses and provide subtle advantages over generations. It's not like we're going to engineer the fuckin' X men, just people without spinabifida and caucasions that don't get sunburns... little shit like that.

Unless some sort of Butlerian Jihad occurs, it's gonna happen

Possibly decrease it, if parents decide to genetically engineer their kids to have larger penises. If you could ensure your little boy would grow up to have a big dick, would you?

Then again, if everybody starts doing that, the standard for what is considered a "big" dick would start increasing. Maybe 7.5 or 8 inches would become the new "average."

I think it was inevitable that at some point evolution was going to provide us with the ability to take control of the process of natural selection. From an evolutionary perspective it would be foolish for a species to not use every means possible to enhance its genetic makeup.

But I guess people will probably try to "design" children to fit their own ideas of beauty.

The only problem I see is the perceived control we'd have over it.

When nature screws up, and a child is born with some sort of defficiency, there's no one to blame other than nature (religious people could even say it's part of God's plan or something). However, if scientists screw up (or if something unexpected happens), people are probably not going to take it lightly.

And, I wonder what would happen to some more dogmatic religions, given the fact that we'd be "performing miracles".

mine would be an eastern euro with beautiful blue eyes, no frekles, nice breasts, nice ass, proportioned body, and generally slender but with some meat. the polish or russian look generally would be preferred.

edit: Actually, Xanax gave me a great idea. If I order a girlfriend when I'm 25, and not get married until I'm 45, I can have a hot 20 year old wife later in life, when I'm rich and famous.
