what is the best DJ magazine?

what is the best electronic music magazine, or what is your favorite? ive been meaning to get a subscription to DJ Mag, but after hearing about the new owners not caring about the quality all year and just focusing on the poll im starting to look at other mags.

anyone heard of slices? i only read one issue but it was excellent but they only cover the techno-ish side of edm.

I got a free slices DVD when I ordered a record from Germany. It had 20 minute interviews with both Funk D'Void and Booka Shade. Going on this, slices would be good.

I wish I lived in Germany.

I always buy Mixmag, but I wouldn't particularly recommend it. The quality of journalism isn't brilliant, as they're prone to self-revisionism, factual mistakes and hyping shit all out of proportion so they have something to sell magazines on.

I mainly buy it because they cover all the major electronic scenes, so I can keep up with what's happening across the board. They also review records you might not otherwise have heard of. The journalism isn't good, but at least it's comprehensive.

I recall another slices DVD feauturing a report from Fuse Club so yeha i believe it's more techno orientated. Dont think trance wil b discussed often.

BPM is pretty good, I read the online issue once in a while.

They're all bad as far as I'm concerned. If I want good reading to go along with what I listen to I'll pick up Scientific American or something.

what about those small pocket-sized magazines.. what's their names? i have a few issues that came with psyshop parcels, but i haven't read them.

I used to buy DJmag and mixmag habitually on my lunchbreak. Neither are bad as long as you don't listen to their opinions, and just make your own mind up on the music you listen to. I bought IDJ for the first time ever the other day and it has MUCH more music than djmag and mixmag review, though.

Muzik was that last one I gave much heed. Shame about their demise at issue 99.

Hmmm, why not try DJmag. There's lots of cool stuff in there.

does sound on sound enter in this category? or it's not Dj enough?

Mushroom or Shangri-Lala or something? Never had much time for their ad hoc fusion of pseudoscientific enlightenment and artist/label promotions... the Internet is a far superior medium for what those little magazines typically offer.

System J is spot on with the review of Mixmag. There is some quality music coverage, reviews, etc but there is also a lot of filler and gossip-esque articles. There's way too much drug coverage IMO, some 4 page bollocks about "the next E!" or what have you. Also, being in the states the 30 page club guide that covers UK venues ends up being wasted pages with a hot chick or two between them. The free CD has almost always been good, with some quality mixes on them.

BPM is OK. The magazine doesn't cover as wide a spectrum of music as Mixmag, but there also aren't too many wasted gossip pages either. The mag itself has some nice graphics through it, and is appealing to the eyes. The thing I don't like about BPM is (ironically) the US-slant of the mag, with reviews of the latest Bargrooves album when there are big releases from the UK and elsewhere that don't get mentioned. Also, the mag has broadened its coverage to technology in general, with a "Wired" feel to some articles (i.e. video game coverage, iPod accessory reviews, etc). I personally think that is a bad thing, but it may not be what you are looking for is you want a purely EDM-related magazine.

DJMag: Haven't read it, so I can't say.

Remix: This mag tends to have some good interviews (I need to find that issue with the Danny Krivit one...), and a LOT of coverage on gear, production tools, etc. This mag doesn't offer as much coverage of the music as much as coverage on the gear used for production or mixing. If you are a Producer (with cash to burn), or a gear-head then this mag is for you. Otherwise, you may get bored with all of the 4-page reviews/ads for Mackie's new thing...

DJ Times: I like this mag a lot, because there are a lot of good tips from other mobile and club DJs around the US. This mag doesn't do a lot of coverage on new EDM releases, opting instead for charts on what's being played out the most. The mag also has tips articles for mobile DJs, and reviews on new mixers, CD players, and other mixing gear. This mag is geared for mobile DJs, as most of the mag's coverage is catered to them, with interviews of the biggest mobile DJs around the country, etc. A typical article would be something like "Using props at your next event: How to increase your company's worth with client interaction". I would recommend this mag to a mobile or club DJ, but not to a casual EDM fan.

Ironically, I subscribe to Rolling Stone instead of any of these (although I'd like a DJ TImes subscription). I wish RS would do more EDM coverage, since their Rock/Pop coverage tends to be really good.

does no one read IDJ here?! best tech reviews, great tune coverage, lots of club news and all well written and no crap fashionista stuff. Mixmag is for 16 year old pillheads and DJ Mag, whilst worthy of a purchase, is a shadow of its former self...

Yeah I bought IDJ for the first time the other day and was impressed, more music reviews than DJ and Mixmag, and they were more comprehensive too. Generally if I have time to kill on a train etc I'll buy mixmag, dj or IDJ depending on cover features, free cds etc.

I've never seen an issue of IDJ around here

Although more on an indie slant, XLR8R is pretty good too.

i get mixmag i used to love it back in the day
i still kinda do they got pretty good mixed cds,pretty good reviews of tracks and clothing,gadgets etc
cool interview with dj's
but as of like a year now they been adding more and more of alternative bands and stuff like that
and its not just mixmag you see it at these festivals with rock bands and djs and i dunno i will never get the relation between them to
rock magazines dont give edm djs any props so why should we give them props?
but mixmag is still an ok mag

This months Mixmag has The Klaxons on the front and a Simian cd. I thought this was a dance mag not the fucking NME. They had a Josh Wink acid house classics CD a few months back though, which i missed, tragically

That acid house special was the best Mixmag in ages. Page after page of stuff on the birth of acid house, the Chicago scene, the Second Summer of Love and the tabloid scares, as well as a great cover CD to boot.

The last Mixmag issue I bought had the Richie Hawtin cover CD. It was pretty good, but the Fabio and Grooverider mix from 04 (?), and the Lisa Lashes "Summer Bangers" CD were my fav Mixmag CDs.

AY STAR: I guess that the promoters of said festivals decided to broaden the appeal of the shows in order to increase ticket sales. Reaching to a broader audience means reaching more potential customers... Not to mention that there are some Rock groups that you could easily dance to

Been out of the loop for many years now... didn't even know Muzik had bitten the dust. Bit gutted to hear it to be honest! It pretty much took over from Mixmag for a while in the mid 90s - principally because Mixmag (our previous monthly bible) had become so crap. Have no idea what Mixmag is like now - but disappointing to see that yet again in the long run the big brand name always survives...
